Carlos Borbón of Costa Rica, who signs his work in his pseudonym "carbón," has been producing what he terms his Pyro Sculptures on Leather since 1981. Until the fall of 1999 when for the first time he added acrylic paint and a patina finish to his handsome pieces, he was creating all of his tonalities by means of pyrography with a standard wire-tipped tool plus burning by friction produced by a tool of his own invention. He likewise designed tools to create a series of textures on the leather, and others to aid him in producing the relief work he also incorporates in his distinctive technique.
"carbón" was featured in Pyrograffiti, a pyrography article in the September-October issue of the Woodcarver On-Line Magazine linked here.
