Shang's Story
The son of the great General Li of the Imperial Army, Captain Li Shang has been raised according to the strict tradition of his country and has had a military upbringing. He is disciplined and determined to bring honor to his father when he is appointed captain of a ragtag band of recruits.
At first Shang is very proud of his new ranking, sure that his troops will be the greatest in China. However, the recruits' lack of any skills or discipline and Chi Fu's taunting makes Shang realize that he and his troops have a long way to go.
Shang proves to be a good captain though, his troops' skill improves greatly under his careful training. When a particularly clumsy recruit named Ping succeeds in climbing a pole to retrieve an arrow, Shang's initial challenge, Shang is rightfully proud. The troops, with Ping at the head of the class, complete their training with flying colors.
However, Chi Fu continues to taunt Shang about being unqualified to be a captain and has gotten the job just because of who his father is, but, Ping tells him otherwise. When the troops are called to battle, Shang rides proudly at the head of his army.
Shang and the troops arrive to find that General Li, Shang's father, and nearly all the rest of the Chinese Army have been killed by the evil invading Hun leader, Shan-Yu, and the village they were guarding burnt to the ground. Devastated on the inside, but composed on the outside, Shang honors his father in the military fashion before announcing to his troops that they are China's only hope. He bravely leads them against the immense Hun Army, against impossible odds. "If we die, we die with honor!" he tells his troops as they draw their swords.
The troop is saved by a ingenious plan thought up by Ping, who creates an avalanche to bury the Huns. She then saves Shang from the snow as well, getting injured herself doing so. Ping is then revealed to be not a soldier, or even a man, but a woman named Mulan. Shang is unable to except what she did, but defies tradition himself by allowing her to live, but leaving her on the mountain.
Hailed as China's Greatest Hero, Shang parades through the Imperial City with a heavy heart, thinking of Mulan. But, when she reappears, he still cannot except her and ignores her warning of the surviving Huns in the city, unable to break with the strict tradition he was raised with. But, then Mulan thinks of another plan, this time to save the Hun-kidnapped Emperor, and Shang throws all tradition aside and joins her. Together, they defeat the evil Shan-Yu and his Elite Huns. Shang then watches proudly as Mulan is honored by the Emperor and finally excepted by all of China for what she is, a heroine.
Shang realizes he loves Mulan, but is unable to find the words to express it, and he watches sadly as Mulan's rides away towards her home. However, Shang follows the wise Emperor's advice and his own heart and follows Mulan to her home, where he is invited to say for dinner, and, forever.
