Justin's Story
Note: This story is going to include Justin's background from the book, as well as what is mentioned in the movie.
Justin is the tall, handsome, and charming captain of the guard of the rats of NIMH. He is the youngest of the original rats, and is still just a kid at heart. He loves to play jokes on his old friend Mr. Ages, who is not amused by Justin's clowning around. However, Justin can be deadly serious when the situation calls for it.
Justin, like the other original 20 rats of NIMH, began his life as a common street rat. He was captured and taken to the National Institute of Mental Health, or NIMH. There, he and the 19 other rats were given injections that made them super-intelligent and slowed the aging process down to almost nothing.
Daring even then, Justin was the first to start to try find an escape route by leaping out of his cage when the door was opened, knowing he was too valuable to be killed. He discovered the ventilation system leading to the outside during his venture and told Nicodemus of his discovery. Then, one night, Justin discovered he could read the words written upon his cage and he opened the door. Once he discovered this, he, Nicodemus, and the other 18 spent months planning the successful escape from NIMH.
In the rats new home in a rosebush, they live by stealing electricity and other things from Farmer Fitzgibbon, something Justin and many of the others believe is dead wrong. So, they come up with "The Plan", a plan to move from their rosebush to Thorn Valley and live without stealing. One rat, Jenner, very strongly disagrees with the idea.
When Mrs. Brisby, a widowed mouse, comes seeking help, Justin and Nicodemus are more than willing to help her move her home to a safe place. However, in order to safely move her home, the cat must be drugged. Mrs. Brisby bravely volunteers to do so and Justin accompanies her to give instructions. She is caught in the attempt by Billy, the farmer's son, and put in a cage. Justin is forced to leave, but promises to return for her later.
During the moving of the Brisby home, Jenner cuts the ropes holding the equipment, causing it to backlash and kill Nicodemus. Then Mrs. Brisby shows up, having rescued herself, and tells the rats that they are in great danger and MUST leave. She overheard the humans say that NIMH is coming the next day to destroy them all. Jenner furiously attacks her when he hears this news, not wanting his new plan to stay to fall through so quickly. Justin comes valiantly to her rescue and a swashbuckling sword fight occurs in which Jenner is killed. Justin then has to stop Mrs. Brisby from killing herself by forcibly holding her back when her house starts to sink into the mud. However, Mrs. Brisby is able to use a magical stone Nicodemus gave her to save her house and children. When it is all over, Mrs. Brisby gives the beautiful magic stone to Justin.
With the Brisbys safe, the rats leave for their new home and new life in Thorn Valley with Justin sadly but bravely taking over Nicodemus' place as leader.
As I've browsed around the NIMH webpages I've noticed that Justin seems to have quite a loyal following of fans, so I thought the guy should have his own fan club! He certainly deserves one.
