John Smith's Story

A fearless soldier and a natural athlete, Captain John Smith is a rugged, handsome man with a dry sense of humor. When he first sets sail for the New World, he shares the views of his fellow settlers that the Powhatans are savages that must be tamed like the land... or destroyed.
But then, while out exploring the new land, he meets the beautiful Powhatan Princess, Pocahontas. She opens his eyes and teaches him to see the world around him in a much different light; teaching him that "When you walk the footsteps of a stranger, you learn things you never knew you never knew." As the two spend more time together, they begin to fall in love.
Unfortunatly, the settlers and Pocahontas' people have already clashed, and a war is brewing, both sides determined to destroy the other. Pocahontas and John Smith try desperatly to think of a way to stop their two peoples from fighting, with the help of Grandmother Willow. But, when Smith is accused of killing Kocuom, one of the tribes best warriors and Pocahontas' bethrothed, the war becomes a reality, ready to break out at dawn when John Smith is executed.
At the last second, Pocahontas throws hers across John Smith's body, saving him from death and stopping the terrible war by pointing out to all who are listening, "Look around! This is where the path of hatred has brought us!" The two sides are ready to put down their weapons when the settlers' leader, a greedy man named Ratcliffe grabs a gun and aims for Pocahontas's father, the chief Powhatan. John Smith leaps up and takes the bullet, saving the wise leader...
Smith's wound proves to be enough to send him back home to London... and away from Pocahontas. He leaves the land he came too with a much broader view of the world and with peace between the two peoples. As his ship sails away, he waves to Pocahontas, sadly watching him go from a cliff high above the sea.

If I Never Knew You

As most people know, this beautiful scene was cut from the final version of Pocahontas just a few months before it was released because it "slowed the movie down." With this cut lost to fidgeting little kids, we lost the most touching and well animated scenes in Pocahontas, indeed, in any animated movie. If this scene had not been cut, I believe that Pocahontas would have been better recieved by the general viewing public. It serves to fill in several plot holes and really brings the story around full circle. The scene was included on the laserdisc release and was shown once on ABC. To the disappointment of many, it is not on the new DVD release of the film. Below is a wav file I made of the ABC broadcast of the Mel Gibson/Judy Kuhn version of the song. It's radio quality at best, but if you have not heard it, it's well worth the download! I also have several more pictures from the scene in the picture gallery. Enjoy!
