Balto's Story

Based on a true story, Balto tells the story of a wolf-husky hybrid who lived in Nome, Alaska in 1925. Not a dog, not a wolf, Balto is outcast by both groups, except for the beautiful husky Jenna, who takes the time to see beyond Balto's rough exterior.
Constantly tormented by the sled dog champion Steele and his gang of dogs, Balto seems doomed to remain an outcast, until a Diptheria epidemic strikes the children of the isolated Nome, including Jenna's owner, Rosie. The desperate town sends Steele and his team to get the antitoxin from the town of Nanana. But, they soon become lost in violent snow storms on the return trip. Determined to save the children, Balto and his friends set out to find the stranded team with the precious antitoxin. But, when Jenna is injured, Balto bravely makes the decision to continue on his own rather than risk his friends being hurt anymore.
When Balto finally finds the team, he is attacked by a wildly jealous Steele, who falls over a small cliff in his efforts to hurt Balto. Free of Steele, Balto takes over leadership of the team and begins to lead them home.
Unsure of himself, Balto has trouble being the leader at first. Finding that his path home has been erased by Steele, Balto becomes frantic and runs the team into even more trouble than Steele did. However, he discovers the heritage of the wolf within himself and his own indomitable spirit. Letting his courageous heart guide him, Balto gets the antitoxin safety back to Nome and saves the children, proving himself a true hero.
Today, you can still see a statue of "Balto" in Central Park, which was built to honor he and the other dogs' Endurance, Fidelity, and Intelligence."

The "Real" Balto

The picture above is of the statue built in Central Park to honor all the sled dogs who relayed the antitoxin from Nanana to the relief of stricken Nome in 1925. In real life, Balto was a husky who was the lead dog of one of the teams that relayed the antitoxin. There have been several books written about him that you can find at your local library. Today, the Iditirod Dog Sled race follows the very path that he and the others took. No one knows if the dog featured is the real husky who was known as Balto, but after this wonderful movie, most people will see it as him. Who knows, maybe it is!"
