    NEWS

I got the job I've wanted for 10 years--I get to be our school's technology teacher!!! I'll be teaching all the grade levels (K through 5) for 50 minutes a day. I'm really excited and I know this is what I want to do until I retire.

I got my master's degree in education on June 12th from Western Oregon University. I'm so happy and relieved to be done--I've been taking classes at night for the past three years. Life will feel so much easier without having to drive out to Salem and without having tests to study for and term papers to write.

A few months ago the boys and I built a chicken coop and started raising chickens. We started off with a hen and rooster, then got two more hens that already lay eggs. (We get an egg a day from each of them.) Then we got six little chicks in April and kept them under a light in the garage for 6 weeks. Now they're big and out there with the other ones. Our hen started sitting on eggs and hatched some chicks. So now we have twelve chickens!

David is working at the Portland Zoo in their ZooTeen program. It's REALLY cool. He got to pet and feed a rhino and hold a porcipine. He holds animals while kids come up and pet them and also works behind the scenes. He really loves it. He's there every weekend from 1 to 6:30.
COOL NEWS! You already know that David is working at the Portland Zoo in the Zooteens program. They told them that two of them (out of 300) would get to job-shadow the zoo veterinarians. If they wanted to do it, they had to write a paragraph explaining why they should be picked. David wrote one and he found out last week that he was picked!! He started working with the vet last Friday and does it every Friday. He loved it, even more than the regular Zooteens work. He got to be in on doing a physical of an owl. I gave him a camera to keep with him and I'll post pictures he takes here. I can't wait to see them myself. He gets to see all the cool stuff behind the scenes that no one else gets to see!

While David works, Daniel and I have really explored the zoo. We know every corner of it now! Daniel really loves the wolf. And of course, I love the sea otter. Last Saturday we put our bikes on the car and rode from the zoo down past the Rose Garden, through downtown Portland and down to the Willamette River waterfront and rode along the bike path. Then we got on the train (they have hooks inside to hang your bike on) and rode it back to the zoo. It was a fun adventure. We plan to ride our bikes a lot this summer.

Daniel auditioned Saturday for the Portland Metropolitan Youth Orchestra with his flute. The audition was at Marymount University. It was in the music building and he had to go into a room with a panel of five people looking at him while he played. He played a song that he brought, then they gave him sheet music he'd never seen before that he had to play. The audition results were posted on the MYS website Metropolitan Youth Symphony and he made it into Sousa Band. The season starts in September and he'll be performing in three concerts during the year.

David played Harold Hill in Corbett Children's Theatre's production of The Music Man. It was wonderful and a great experience for him. He was sad when it was all over.

Bruce has been painting a mural in our kitchen. It's cool! Today we worked in the yard together. It's so nice, now that I'm on summer vacation, we actually get to see each other during the day. (During the school year he works all weekend until midnight, so when I'm home he's gone and when he's home I'm gone.) This morning all four of us took a walk from our house to the school and we saw SIX deer on the way!

Our neice, Melissa, will be coming to visit us soon for the 4th of July weekend. We haven't seen her for several years and we're really looking forward to it. 4th of July is really great here. There's a great, small-town parade with kids on horses and bikes and tractors and fire trucks. Everyone throws candy at the people watching from the side of the street. Then there's a carnival (no rides, just booths and games) and a beer garden, auction, talent show (Daniel played his flute in it last year and plans to again this year) and a mole contest! (Whoever has shows the biggest mole he/she has caught wins the grand prize---having the mole stuffed and mounted by the local taxidermist!!!) Then there are really great fireworks at night at the school. Then when we get home, we usually set off our own fireworks in our driveway. (I'll be posting photos on the website soon after)

We're planning on driving down to southern California soon to visit the rest of our family. It's going to be wierd and fun to see all the kids because we know they've grown and changed a lot since we're seen them.

That's all my news for now but check back again. I'm going to try to keep it updated once a month.
