MELCHIOR

Melchior was from the city of Nubia.  He was believed to have been the King of Persia.  He is mentioned in the Roman Martyrology on January 6.

The three gifts that the Wise Men brought were also prophetic as well as ordinary.  Gold was a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense was a symbol of priestship, and myrrh was a symbol of death.  Another more weakly described version of the gifts were that gold symbolized virtue, frankincense symbolized prayer, and myrrh symbolized suffering, for again, it was used to alleviate pain during crucifixion.
