GASPAR

Gaspar was from the city of Tharsis.  He was believed to have been the King of India.  He is mentioned in the Roman Martyrology on January 1.  Gaspar was also known as Caspar, which, in Persian means “Master of the Treasure.”

The gifts that the three wise men brought were all ordinary gifts for a king.  Gold as a valuable, frankincense as a perfume, and myrrh as an anointing oil.  While gold was associated as a crown for the newborn King, frankincense is a fragrant gum resin used as a precious incense that came from the slitting the bark of many Amyrid trees.  Myrrh is an aromatic gum resin and also a perfume that was very costly, and was used to alleviate pain in crucifixion.
