JUNE 25, 1860

Caller Bob rode out to the waystation and saw Kid, Cody, Jimmy, and Lou sitting at the bunkhouse porch. "Hi fellas. Jimmy, Cody, I’m glad you’re here. I have something for you."

Jimmy grinned. "For me?" He couldn’t imagine what Caller Bob could have for him. He took the card that Caller Bob held out to him, and he couldn’t believe his eyes. "You’re kidding." Seeing the serious expression on Caller Bob’s face, he continued, "Right? I’m a Pony Express rider. I can’t do this."

Cody had peeked over Jimmy’s shoulder. "What’s the matter Jimmy, don’t you think you’ll do a good job?" Cody had his sly grin on his face. He knew if he ribbed Jimmy enough, Jimmy would eventually do anything. "What you got for me, Caller Bob?" Caller Bob handed him a card.

"Bob, I can’t do this." Jimmy stated again.

"Aw, come on Jimmy. At least yours is more interesting than mine, and it’s for a good cause." Cody encouraged.

Kid and Lou looked at their cards and grinned. Both of them couldn’t picture Jimmy and Cody at these new jobs.

"So when do we start them?" Cody asked.

"Right now is a good as time as any." Caller Bob replied.

"Good, I have a mail run this evening, so I guess I won’t have to take it." Cody smiled at the thought of getting out of delivering the mail, and being in town where he could visit his gal.

"I’m going to deliver these cards to the ones who are to take your places. Would you like to ride along?" Caller Bob looked from Cody to Jimmy to see their reactions.

"I have a question. Do we get to stay at their place or what?" Cody was hoping so. That way he would be in town, closer to his gal.

"I would guess that if they are going to be riders then they should stay here, but I guess it would be mostly up to the person." Caller Bob wasn’t quite sure how it was going to work out with people switching jobs. He was hoping for the best though.

"I’m going to pack me up a few things to take then in case he wants to trade beds as well as jobs." Cody said as he hurried into the bunkhouse. Jimmy trailed behind. He didn’t like the idea of changing jobs much, but he wasn’t going to decline and have Cody tease him about it. He was just hoping that the other person wouldn’t want to change with him.
