The Oak Ridge Quartet with Wally Fowler, Bob Weber, Calvin Newton (not exactly sure of the other members) announced they were breaking up at the end of 1956 and performed their last concert on December 8, 1956 in Atlanta. There are many differing dates given for this (often Jan. 1958 on their LPs), but I have a tape from December 1956 where Wally Fowler introduces Smitty Gatlin and announces that the Oak Ridge would disband and Smitty would organize a new Oak Ridge, and Smitty sings a solo. Wally says at that All Night Sing that the Oak Ridge Quartet had sung for 11 years at that point (making 1946 the beginning) and that they were breaking up. The Oak Ridge Boys as known today started in January, 1957.
