Vince Gill's Special 50th Birthday from www.gactv.com April 16, 2007
April 16, 2007 Even though Vince Gill caught on to plans his wife, Amy Grant, was making for a surprise party for his 50th birthday last week, she still managed to spring a couple of surprises on him on his big day.
The Tennessean reports that Amy first took him to one of his favorite restaurants, Noshville Deli, where he was greeted by the staff and an accordion player. Amy offered to pick up the tab for anybody who sang "Happy Birthday" to Vince and ended up buying breakfast for everyone in the place.
Then Vince headed out to his favorite golf course, where about a dozen friends surprised him. "What is all this?" Vince asked when he saw them on the putting green.
After a round of golf, Vince returned home, where preparations were under way for a party with a guest list of nearly 300, including Dierks Bentley, Reba McEntire, Tony and Anastasia Brown, Michael Omartian and Bill Anderson. His friends cut trips and vacations short to be there for the 4 p.m. party. Janis Ian sang her '70s hit "At Seventeen," and Vince even picked up the guitar and sang a bit himself.
The party featured a five-tier cake made by LeLand Riggin, who also made the couple's wedding cake. Among the presents from Amy was a vintage guitar, and Vince also received a copy of the Norman, Okla., newspaper from his birthdate, April 12, 1957, as well as his birth announcement in the newspaper.

Some of Nashville's finest songwriters sang their classics at Vince Gill's 50th birthday party Thursday (April 12) at his home in Nashville. Performing on a backyard stage sheltered by a large tent, Thom Schuyler kicked off the event with his affectionate homage to Music City composers, "16th Avenue." Don Schlitz reprised his mythic "The Gambler." Janis Ian rolled back the calendar to 1975 with "At Seventeen." Rodney Crowell sang "'Til I Gain Control Again." The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Jeff Hanna favored the crowd with his rendition of Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles." Others who took their turns at the microphone included wife Amy Grant, daughter Jenny Gill, Leslie Satcher, Al Anderson, Fred Knobloch, Beth Nielsen Chapman and Gill himself. Also spotted in the crowd were Bill Anderson, Del McCoury, songwriter Matraca Berg, guitarist Pete Huttlinger and music executives Bruce Hinton, Tony Brown and James Stroud.
