Getting comfy cozy
Fort Worth Star-Telegram
By SHIRLEY JINKINS
April 12, 2006 FORT WORTH -- Singer-songwriter Amy Grant , always one for an intimate and comfortable concert, set up housekeeping onstage Tuesday at Bass Hall. And why not?
She's here for a two-day stand that continues tonight, filming a live-concert DVD complete with an onstage couch and framed painting from her home. It looks pretty much like your living room would if you had a six-piece band and a lot of sound and film equipment lying around.
Oh, and to make that down-home feeling complete, Grant's country-legend husband, Vince Gill , is along for comfort.
Longtime fans are going to love this show because Grant includes material going back to the early '80s (how long has it been since you've heard Baby Baby?). Her secular songs make up the bulk of the show, but, of course, there's a fine line between worldly and godly in Carry You and Ask Me.
Gill joined his wife first on Saved By Love, playing mandolin. Gill later joined her on the couch for some patented Gill acoustic artistry on a couple of wonderful new songs, These Days and The Ace Up Your Sleeve.
Oddly enough, Grant sang the House of Love duet, which she recorded with Gill, without him Tuesday, instead sharing the microphone with a sweet-voiced member of her band.
The filming of the DVD was much less intrusive than on most shoots, but the bright and colorful lighting can be a little annoying.
The crew seems to have gone to great lengths to keep the cameras out of the audience's way.
Some of the evening's best moments were when Grant told the stories behind her songs, such as the conversation with the street guy in Santa Monica that led to Behind the Eyes.
Grant's two concerts here are geared to the DVD that fans will be watching while curled up on their own couches.
The best thing about Tuesday's concert may have been her ability to create the same cozy feeling for the Bass Hall crowd.
