My Review
Another fantastic evening with Amy--2 nights in a row and great to see other FOA members! I ran into Dasha, Jeff, Jayne, Sean, Jackii and her beautiful daughters (again :) ), Joe, Kim, and many other FOA members. There were so many FOA members that we took a group shot after the concert was over.
I was on time for the sound check this time. Parking was not that great so I ended up parking in student housing parking and walking a little bit to the venue on the college campus. My mom stayed in the car to read and I later found out that she could have come in to the sound check so I felt bad but she said she enjoyed the quiet time to read. I was able to get my FOA sound check pass this time and got my tickets. Then, I met several FOA members whom I had not met like Kim who did the shirts for Texas. We were lead inside the venue where Amy was already into the sound check. They were already playing and singing so I did not think she would come down to meet and greet with us.
At the sound check, they worked on Turn This World Around, Jesus Loves Me/They'll Know We Are Christians/Helping Hand from Rock of Ages CD, Eye To Eye, Beautiful, Saved By Love, I Will Be Your Friend, Carry You. Then in true Amy fashion, she came down to see the people after doing some of the songs while the band/crew was doing technical stuff. She had to go back up and finish the sound check after they were done but after the sound check was over, she came back down to see those whom did not get a chance to see her. This is when I saw Amy. I said "Hi" and re-introduced myself because she meets so many people that I did not know if she remembered me to which Amy said she did. She knew she called me "Terry" in NJ but said she remembered and called me "Jill" then Dasha chimed in that Amy has to remember me because I sent her the "Wallet Song". Amy said that was her only copy. I said I set Amy up good, sending a tape, cd, and copy of the words to the song. I asked Amy if she would consider singing the "Wallet Song" at the Coffee event in Texas and she said she wasn't planning on singing at that but if you vocals were doing fine, she'd consider it. She had to go to a dinner/meeting with some of the college big wigs and only had like 20 minutes to see the rest of us.
Amy opened with "Stay for Awhile" then "Takes A Little Time". She said she is glad that spring is coming around and tells of seeing in a catalog in an airplane of a ball cap that has a blue light that shines to make you feel better if you have the winter time blues. She said she could not imagine a more horrible light on a woman. She commented started singing in high school and being grateful to still get to do her hobby saying that a lot of us have followed her around for a lot of those years to which we screamed then she called us "GrantHeads". Then, she sang "Simple Things". She bragged about Will Owsley, her guitar player and that Switchfoot ran into them in the airport and found out who he was and said they have his records. She commented before the next song about being with someone you love and that if you were not, it was a good time to go to the bathroom and that if you did not find anyone yet, it was a good time to dream about it. She then sang "Lucky One". She said she did not know how much we wanted to hear about the songs then talked about being chatty at her Canada show the other night and that someone told her to stop talking and sing. Someone yelled out that he was not here tonight. She asked how many of us were at last night's show then she said she would either have to retell her stories or lie because she did not have new material. She then told an incredible story of her sister, Carol whom in 2 years older than her, and her having their babies within 24 hours of each other at the same hospital. Amy had Matt then Carol had Claire and that everyone came to see Amy when Matt was born bringing flowers and candy then her room became a waiting room where everyone ate her chocolates. After everyone left, Carol and Amy sat their babies on the bed together and took their picture while Carol and Amy sat on ice. It was such a cute story. Then she talked about Carol having champagne wishes and herself being more Bohemian but that she has gotten to see the world while Carol has stayed home. I love when Amy talks...she tells the best stories. Then she played "Saved By Love" that she said was wrote for her sister but she changed the name to Laura and doesn't know why. Amy talked about being on a park bench in Santa Monica, CA and a homeless man, Johnny Gillespie, sat down with bags next to her. She ended up talking to him for over 2 hours on that bench talking about life. He asked for money and she ended up giving him $20 but he bought some stuff as a gift for Amy from a little kid was selling with the $20 that she gave him. She got nerves about going back to her hotel and he said she could trust him. She then sang "Turn This World Around" which she wrote partly from that experience. She talked about her drummer and bass player being from Counting Crows while tuning her guitar and then Amy talked about her influences like Carol King and James Taylor before played "Big Yellow Taxi". Someone yelled out for her to do "Sleigh Ride" which threw Amy off. She commented that she did not need a set list because everyone was yelling out songs. She talked about love and fear being most powerful feelings, about singing about her beliefs and that translating to her being a Christian, about her divorce and problems in her life, about not being able to lift her head up, about having regret and shame in life and realizing that that would go away if we realize we are forgiven. It was funny as during this chat Amy said "We are all stink bombs really" which I never imagined I would hear her say. Then she played "Out In the Open". She sang "House of Love" with Gene Miller next.
She commented about how the years have gone by and spoke of a poem that she wrote on aging. Then she talked about her daughter, Millie whom she wrote "Baby Baby" for 16 years ago when she was 6 weeks old. She describes Millie as loving freedom then went into "Baby Baby". She talked of a dear friend whom did not have a great childhood then went into "Ask Me" which went right into "After the Fire". She then dedicated "Beautiful" to a dear friend whom had someone on the other side; it was a kind of sad point as the person whom this was dedicated to was sobbing through the song. She talked about an author writing about remembering then went into "Carry You" but the intro was kind of messed up like the band did not know what song she was going to do. She sang "Come Be With Me" then "The Things We Do For Love". She talked about the theme song for her short lived NBC show then sang "Believe" and "Every Heartbeat" doing the hand movements that I love that she does on this song for part of it. She introduces Kim Keyes and we yelled for Kim to do "Cher" then Amy said she had someone at sound check wanted to throw it around the band for them to all sing. This was totally spontaneous and was really rocking. The band and Amy seemed to really let loose and have fun with this segment of the show. Kim sang "Without Love". Gene Miller did an awesome version of "Oh Susannah". It had a sort of slow, mellow fell. She said "Well, we're halfway around the circle -- anybody else wanna sing something." to which Will Owsley started "Sweet Home Alabama". It really smoked as well as Millard doing "Keep Your Hands to Yourself" next. Amy thanked everyone then closed with "I Will Remember You" then left the stage till she came back for the encore.
Before her last song, Amy talked about the fact that this building she was in was going to be gutted. She talked about remembering her grandmother and talked of wanting us to remember. She sang "If These Walls Could Speak" with Jonathan Hemby doing piano. Great way to end another awesome evening. So great to hear just Amy's voice with piano...Incredible!
