Williamsburg, VA

My favorite all around vacation spot is Williamsburg, VA. I love Colonial American history, and Williamsburg is living history. You can see how people lived in Colonial America. You can see how they dressed; how they lived; what they ate; and how they earned a living. There are demonstrations of children’s games, and your children can take home toys just like the ones colonial children played with.

I always stop at the Sir Walter Raleigh Inn for cookies and lemonade, and the Apothecary Shop for Rock Candy. Mmmmm!

When you (or your children, more likely) get tired of history, Busch Gardens is just down the road.

Or you can go outlet shopping. We’ve spent two vacations in Williamsburg, and I want to go back. One day, I hope to spend Christmas in Williamsburg in one of the rooms in the Historic Area.

Hershey Park, PA (Chocolate World ) and York, PA

Here’s another good history/amusement park vacation. York, PA is in the middle of Amish country in PA. You can tour an Amish farm, and taste wonderful Amish food. When you’ve had your fill of pretzels, you can head to Hershey Park and fill up on chocolate and fun rides.

The Poconos:

This is a leave the kids at home vacation spot. Well, I’ve heard there are family resorts, but why would you want the kids with you in the round bed or the indoor pool in your room ? My husband and I stayed in a room with the latter, plus a private sauna, fireplace, and heart shaped whirlpool tub. Most of the Poconos resorts also offer breakfast and dinner as part of the room rate.

Silverthorne, CO .

Actually, Silverthorne (about two hours from Denver) is where we stayed. We traveled all over eastern Colorado, hitting Aspen, Breckenridge (great shopping and dining), Pike’s Peak ( Camera Atop Pike's Peak ), and Colorado Springs. We saw the Garden of the Gods and the Air Force Academy .

I had never seen the Rockies, and they are truly spectacular. What amazed an East Coaster like me was the fact that there are no guardrails on those curvy, mountainous roads. I guess the snowplows would just desecrate them, since they wouldn’t be visible in deep snow. All I know is I’m glad my husband was driving, and not me.

Ocean City, MD

If you like crowds, kids, sand, and the ocean, this is the place to be in Maryland in the summer. Don’t kid yourself-if you go to Ocean City between Memorial Day and Labor Day, it’s CROWDED. But, it’s also fun. Nothing feels more like a vacation than going to the beach, and sitting on a towel in the sand. Evenings are devoted to aimlessly wandering the Boardwalk and the shops along it. Nothing is more conducive to sleep than sea air and the pounding of the waves on the beach. I’m ready-let’s go!

WASHINGTON, DC

I am a native Washingtonian. It is a wonderful place to visit. There is so much to do, and the Smithsonian Museums , as well as all the monuments, and the Capitol Building and White House are free! You could spend a week in DC and not hit all the sites. We have a great subway system that brings you right to the Mall, which is the huge grassy area between most of the museums and monuments. In addition, the subway will take you directly to several shopping malls. Come visit your Nation's Capital!

HOUSTON, TEXAS

My sister lives in Houston, and I have been to visit her several times. We have been to the University of Houston and to Galveston. The campus is impressive, with beautiful buildings. Galveston is a marvel-a Spanish flavor town, with old buildings, and The Strand - with shopping, food, crafts -and a white sandy beach.

QUEBEC, CANADA

Quebec is a great place to visit. Old Quebec has a boardwalk high above the St. Lawrence River. Do you know, in winter, they slide down a ramp towards the beach on the ice? We ate in quaint restaurants in old houses and encountered a mime. I loved practicing my French-although the natives didn't seem to think I spoke it very well!!

YOSEMITE

Enjoy information on Ansel Adams, the great photographer, and nature at it's best. I never understood the phrase "So beautiful it makes you cry" until I entered Yosemite. This place is worth the trip!

Nearby, is San Francisco . Fisherman's Wharf is neat to me, because you can see seals approaching the docks behind the restaurants, looking for a handout!

I also went to Carmel. It is truly charming, with expensive shops. But on a weekend, it is very crowded.

Monterrey reminded me of other towns that I have been in. It is full of craftspeople, with small shops lining the streets. The aquarium is not to be missed! For more information about visiting Monterrey and Carmel Click Here

And that is about the extent of my vacationing and traveling, except for a 3 week trip in 11th grade to France (specifically Paris and Besancon),with a side trip to Geneva, Switzerland . Yes, the Alps are bigger than the Rockies. I actually enjoyed that trip, but it was so long ago, I’m sure much has changed. Nothing I could tell you would even begin to describe how things are now. But you can see live pictures of Geneva .

NEW YORK CITY

When I was in school, I went to New York City twice-once in elementary school and once in junior high. I also went while I was in college, but that was many years ago. We did the usual tourist stuff-the The Empire State Building , The United Nations and Rockefeller Center . I'd really like to go back.

I would like to plan a romantic trip to Disney World for my 25th anniversary. I have been to their web site, but would like suggestions for resorts to stay in. Can you help? Email me at [email protected].

Well, we decided to go to Jamaica instead. I'll let you know how it was!

1/18/2001 We stayed at the Sandals Royal Carribean in Montego Bay, Jamaica. We got there Monday, 1/8/2001, about 2pm. The first thing I said when I got off the plane was, "It's NOT COLD!!" We went to the hotel in a shuttle just for Sandals. The bellboy took us to our room and gave me a plastic purse with conditioner, shampoo, etc in it.

We ate all of our meals outside-breakfast in the room was included, so we ate breakfast on our balcony everyday. Lunch was buffet style, but they took your plates and escorted you to a table (we chose to eat out on the deck everyday) annd wouldn't let you get drink refills for yourself-they insisted on doing it. Dinner was out on the deck, too. The food was great. Geared to Americans. We never had to change our money. They only wanted American money. We could eat at other Sandals resorts, so we had dinner one night at one of the other ones. The water was warm. We fed the fish who swam up to the area under the deck at lunch and dinner, and we fed the resort cats, too!!! One ate mussels with cheese and cake! We had TEA at 4pm everyday. We went shopping. We went on a semi-submersible and saw coral reefs. We went horseback riding. It was wonderful!!! The alcoholic drinks were very strong-Steve had a pina colada-the bartender put in white rum and the coconut stuff and the ice in the blender. When he was done, he poured it in a glass and poured dark rum over it! I taste tested liquor in a liquor store. Went into another store that REEKED of marijuana and still another store that sold pipes and bongs. Saw marijuana plants growing wild. We came home Sunday, and of course, I have a cold.
I want to go back!!!
