June 2
The desert got another one. Happy Trails, Friend.

April 25
April 25--second day out

After 28 days in the burrow, Goldie's pups came out into the bright, scary desert.
They met the world on April 24 some with more gusto than others. Babies: Squirrelyville part one
Their tiny personalities were already showing; timid, curious, ready for adventure.

The pushy one ate more and grew faster and claimed the role of Alpha boss of the burrow.

May 5--42 days old
Alpha enforces the pecking order

When their home collapsed from all
the scuffling, the pups moved on and dug more holes across their little gulch.
Teenagers: Squirrelyville part two
The Alpha pup followed the food. He was the first squirrel to
breach the fence and the only one bold enough to dig inside the yard.
This no-trespassing warning earned him the name Stomp (before
I compared pictures and saw that he was the Alpha of Goldie's litter).
Desert ground squirrels have
to be tough to survive. Someone is always trying to eat the little guys.
Predators: Squirrellyville part three
June 1--Stomp claims his territory
Stomp dug a spacious home right outside my kitchen window. He was always aggressive, and tried
to claim the whole yard as his personal turf. He would challenge squirrels and birds and even scold
me. While sharing wasn't his favorite sport, he tried to stay on the good side of the food goddess.
June 21--learning to share
Once the neighborhood understood the boundaries he could kick back into the easy life north of the fence.

The desert got him -- August 7 '08
Stomp was washed away in a summer monsoon storm,
or eaten by any of a dozen predators in this area.
I miss you!     Happy Trails
Squirrels are people too!
