Alcatraz is only about a mile offshore, so the boat ride is short. They do circle the island, pointing out the facilities. I was surprised by how small the whole facility is...the convict population was usually around 250 or less. All in single cells. The segregation and isolation blocks were nothing nice. You can spend as much time as you like on the island, but the last boat is at 9:30. There is a self-guided audio tour by former guards and convicts that's very interesting. I thought that some kind of interactive role-playing dinner theater type deal, or overnight stays, would be pretty cool, but...
