Summer tyres
previous setup (05-10/94):
tyre make: Continental Super Contact, Treadw 150, Trac A, Temp A
tyre size: 175/70HR14
used to have these as summer tires, on dry pretty good, but lose
traction on wet like a 911 on slicks... and they got eaten at
a rate of 10kmiles/set in the back. The glueheads that stole it
for a night's ride topped that though... 3mm of tread gone in 100km.
previous setup (03-04/95):
front tyre make: decent re-surfaced made on Bridgestone SF-350's
front tyre size: 195/50HR15
back tyre make: bald Michelin MXV2's
back tyre size: 195/55VR15
good-bye sidewall flex. surprisingly good ride. the most oversteering
setup yet (fun fun, but I need that LSD), doesn't seem to swap ends too
fast though unless I'm really asking for it (handbrake/ice).
The best rim size without fender flares, 195 maximum tire width that
won't rub (barely). Most neutral handling with 2.0f/2.15r bar tire
pressures (29f/31r psi), though testing is yet uncomplete...
compared to the Continental 175/70HR14+dead front shocks setup of last summer,
skidpad figures have come up from ~0.90 to ~0.98 in the 60mph neighborhood,
at lower speeds (like 40mph) the difference is about 20%!
previous setup (04-07/95):
tire size: 195/50HR15 front
195/50VR15 back
tire make: front: decent re-surfaced made on Bridgestone SF-350's
back: Dunlop D40's, they suck...
Dunlops wore down 3mm in 5000km... at front they sucked big time,
no steering feel and traction wasn't mind-boggling either. In the
back they worked quite well, giving pleasant controllable oversteer
at high speeds, and huge powerslides at low-speed corners. Wet weather
traction was pretty good, but that's not high on my priority list.
The re-surfaced Bridgestones were a great tyre, using a Fulda tread
pattern. EXCELLENT steering feel and traction. Only wore down
1.5-2mm in 5500 miles, but had to give up using them due to a tyre
damage to the sidewall (unknown sharp object) to one of them.
If only the company that made them was still in the business, I
would have picked another set without hesitation.
tire size: 195/50ZR15
tire make: BF Goodrich Comp T/A ZR
Dry traction is VERY GOOD. Equal to the retread Bridgestones. Progressive
breakaway, very good acceleration traction, will stop spinning much
sooner than any other tyre so far. Steering feel _almost_ as good
as the Bridgestones, still a joy to drive. Ok treadlife, <1mm down
at 2400km, >6mm left. Very quiet tyre. Needs warming up especially in
colder weather, traction is noticably worse at the first few corners
before the compound heats up a bit. Wet traction is EXCELLENT, and
progressive enough to make driving at (and over) the limit in rain
a relaxing job ;) Confidence-inspiring tyre that won't surprise you
(once warmed up).Recommended for anybody, but forget driving in winter
with these.
