Vehicle Identification
Number:
The
VIN is the most common method of tracking a vehicle. It can be found
in a number of places. The easiest to locate is along the A-pillar
framing the driver's side of the windshield. It also appears in several
prominant locations within the engine compartment as well as in the locations
that the option codes are found (see below).

of a VIN
Engine Number:
The
engine number is the
best way
to discern the 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S cars from the non-S cars.
This number is found on the engine block itself, and (fortunately) is easily
visible from above, without moving anything from a stock configured engine
compartment. It is located on the right side (passenger) of the engine,
close to the fire wall, about 10 inches down into the "maze". You
can locate the number by peering in through the various components while
standing near the battery location.
Manufacturing
Date:
The
manufacturing date appears under the hood, on a sticker next to the fuse
box (between the fuses and the left (driver's) side of the engine compartment.
Look for a month/date in the upper right corner of the sticker.
Color (Paint / Interior):
The
paint and interior codes are listed at the same places as the Option Codes
(see below). Additionally, the paint code is listed in the engine
compartment, on a sticker next to the fuse box. The sticker is located
on the opposite side of the fuse box as the sticker with the Manufacturing
Date, close the center of the vehicle.

A Note on colors: |
This paint
code list derives from the website
Porsche
944 Garage. However, here is a factory window
sticker from a 1988 Turbo with the "S option package" that lists "Guards
Red" as the color, with code G1G1. Thus, this list cannot be treated
as the final word. Additionally,
the below statistics also list Guards Red. |

Option Codes:
The factory installed options
that were included in the car are listed (typically) in two locations.
The first place is on the first page of the "Warranty and Maintenance" book
that comes as part of the vehicle documents when purchased. The second
place is located in the spare tire well, up against the back wall of the
luggage compartment. The information is found on a white sticker,
approxiately 3" x 3". Occasionally, due to various reasons, the tire
well sticker is not always there.
The option codes are usually
in the form of 3 letter/number combinations. Pelican Parts offers
a descriptive list of these on their website, additionally, the Porsche
Option Decoder will look
the codes up for you and report the factory options, given the codes. |
