Anatomy of a Porsche 944 Chassis Number

The chassis number (or world manufacturers code) is embossed in the engine compartment firewall and is also found on the A-pillar in front of the driver.  This 17 character system was used starting in 1981.  Each character (or grouping) is explained using this example, taken from a 1988 Porsche 944 Turbo S.

WPO Designates a Porsche in the world manufacturer code (aka VIN, Vehicle Identification Number)
AA2 US vehicle specification code (VDS code).  Rest of world denoted as ZZZ (blanks)
Char. 1: body type (A = coupe)
Char. 2: engine type (A=2 liter US)
Char. 3: occupant safety system (0=belts only, 1 = dr. airbag, 2 = dr&pass. airbag)
95 First 2 digits of vehicle type designation:
(see below for 3rd digit)

For example:
92 = 924
94 = 944
95 = 951 (944 Turbo)

X Test code or filling character
J Model year code
B = 1981, C = 1982, ......J = 1988 ....etc....
N Production location (N = Neckarsulm, S = Stuttgart)
1 3rd digit from vehicle type designation (see above for 1st two digits)
5 Body/engine code (or incorporated into serial number?)
1248 Serial number
