ALAIN  PROST

Years 1980-1983

1980

In his first race Alain scored his first point (6th place in Argentina), then 2 points in Brazil,... The rest of the season turned out to be more or less a disaster, because the car was very uncompetitive and was breaking down very often. Through the season Alain suffered several high-speed accidents and had to be taken to hospital three times. His confidence inthe car was gone. The decision to leave wasn`t hard - the same as the decision where to go. Alain signed with Renault. Team-mate John Watson finished the season 10th with 6points and Alain was 15th with 5 points. The World Champion became Alan Jones (Williams Ford) with 67 points.

1981

First seven races of the season weren`t exactly great - a 3rd place in Argentina and six retirements, but then came France, Dijon and the first of many wins. The luck turned. By the end of the season Alain scored two more wins and two 2nd places. All together (43 points) was enough for the 5th place in the Championship, while team-mate Rene Arnoux was 9th with 11 points. The World Champion was Nelson Piquet (Brabham Ford) with 50 points.

1982

Alain stayed with Renault and it proved to be quite a successful season again. In the first two races came two wins, but the turbo-charged engine simply wasn`t reliable enough throughout the whole season for winning the Championship. Alain finished the season 4th with 34 points; team-mate Arnoux was 6th with 28 points. The tensions in the team (among drivers) were growing and Arnoux decided to leave; Prost was staying for another season. The Championship title was taken by Keke Rosberg (Williams Ford) with 44 points.

1983

4 wins during the season meant a lot, but were just not enough to claim the title, which was lost in the last race of the season to Nelson Piquet (Brabham BMW) by only two points (59:57). Team-mate, American Eddie Cheever, was 6th with 22 points. The lost title and bad atmosphere in the team resulted in Renault firing Alain Prost, who immidiately signed with McLaren for the next season.
