Issue No. 13 April 1998
The Australia Day long weekend saw the event that the street machine enthusiasts long to see each year, mainly for the driving events and burn out section. But, on the show side, only about ten per cent of the exhibitors were hot rods, with quality up, and fresh from our State Title Show, proved to be real winners, with the public voting Bruce Hamon's Chev roadster pick-up as "People's Choice". Along the way, Bruce also picked up "Best Individual Display" and "Best Commercial". Not too bad considering it is primarily a Street Machine and Drag Car show!
The '29 A Model Tudor of Rob Tuia was still looking fresh as a daisy in its Pearl Purple paint and grey interior, considering a new motor was just re-installed, after a conrod decided to exit through the side of the block! Rob's hard working team were rewarded with "Best Street Rod Judged, Best Sedan/Coupe, Best Street Rod Paint, Best Street Rod Engine Bay, Best Street Rod Interior and Best Street Rod Engineered".
The Street Rod Federation had a display stand organised, which was to have a 90% completed '26 T roadster, and Greg Whitchurch's new glass '34 Chev Tudor body on a rolling chassis, but due to venue changes just four weeks prior to the show dates, and a cut back on entrant numbers, our display booths came up a bit small. Nevertheless we did draw the crowd towards us with the aid of the Mini Rods. We answered all sorts of questions, talked to rodders about the Southwest Sandgroper Nationals, and brought rodders up to date about the Federation.
