Issue No. 13 April 1998

This Run came about in mid 1997, when a group of Rodders got together and decided that a combined State Rod Run for Queensland should be put in place, and become an annual event. After some searching, the venue was decided to be at Nambour Showgrounds, and what better date than the long weekend in January to hold it! So, with all that in place, we anxiously waited for the entries to flood in. They were rather slow at first, with all of us scratching our heads as to how to get the entries in. But, come January things all fell in place, and we were rapt when the entries grew to over 100.

The Run itself, (although the weather was extremely hot and humid, but let's face it, it was hot everywhere!), was a huge success. We had most enter by late Friday, and by that afternoon the Showgrounds resembled tent city. Billy cart racing was a major attraction, with the hill at the Showgrounds testing out rodder's suicidal tendencies. The carts were very professionally made, and painted, even down to the flame jobs and pinstriping. The carts were great in the way that they brought the families together, with dad's vying for placings over the kids. Sunday was 'People's Day', and we had heaps file through the gates. There were the usual trade stands, jumping castles, live entertainment, billy cart trials, ride-in-a-rod and much more. The ice-cream man was run off his feet, and you had to be quick to eat your ice cream before it melted.

Other events from the week-end were an Observation Run (up and over the nearby hinterlands), a Night Cruise to Mooloolaba (because so many attended we created a traffic jam), Rocker Cover Races and Cruising at the Showgrounds. One big highlight for many was the Fireworks Display, where we were given a popular family station wagon (Volvo) to blow sky high. Presentations were kept to a minimum, with 'Peoples Choice' going to Paul Woodrow. 'Top 5' winners were Paul Woodrow, George Higgins, Glen Czislowski, Max Carpenter and Joe Pring. Well, after four days of calling Nambour Showgrounds home, the event had finished, and it was a case of pack up and head off. The buzz was great from all, and suggestions and ideas are already starting to be pencilled in for next year. I would just like to end by saying a big thank you to all who attended, we hope to see you at next year's event.

STOP PRESS!! There is a 40 minute video of the entire week-end available, set to music, including our own theme song. See the station wagon blow sky high, and much more. The video is available through Lindsay (LDI) for $34.95. To order call (07) 5485 5013 or 0419 727 756.
