Bay Area's Tug in the Park - No. 2

Where do you start? 11 months ago? Or, the night before, when it was raining and thundering? It was kinda' clearing on Sunday morning. What do we do? Cancel the Run? Na, let's do it!

So, myself, Tony Phillips ('A' roadster), and his son Luke, with his newly acquired 'A' roadster pick-up, and Geoff Napthali in his brand new, highly customised Twin Spinner ute, cruised down to Stanwell Park, early in the morning. A couple of Bay Area guys were already there, damming the creek with sandbags (the tug-of-war is across the creek).Where is Chris Jenkins, and his family truckster? He's late, and has all the gear (tables, spit, tents, generator, everything). We get a phone call. Chris has blown the motor up on his truckster on his way here. !@#!.. We can do nothing, but wait. Chris finally turns up with the gear in his mate's F100. Quick. Get the meat on the spit, people are turning up already!

After a while, we get the tug-of-war going. Getting pretty hard to get some of the 'mature' rodders into it now (bad backs, heart by-passes etc), plenty of young guns though. Terry Wood is organising the Horizontal Bungi Jumping, which is really popular. Half way through the 'Tugga' we have a break, with some guys sucking on an oxygen bottle (just kidding!) Mick Schumack's got the hot roast beef rolls ready - food's on! (I spotted an eel in the creek, but didn't tell anyone, sssshhhh!)

Into the 'Tugga' finals, with Bay Area babes winning it for the girls, yeehah, and the Dragens Sumo Wrestling team winning it for the guys.

Revolution Rodders never had a chance. After everyone had their hernias checked out, we had the presentations, with heaps of prizes from our sponsors; Junkyard Classics, Route 66, Australian Street Rod Magazine, Ace Paints, Mick Dudley, to name a few. Two trick trophies (Top Open & Top Closed), donated by Ray Flaherty, were ordered from the USA for the event. Nice one Ray.

What a top day. Our first 'Tugga' last year, we had 56 rods, this year we lost count over 104. To all rodders who came, thanks for making our effort worthwhile. There were Rods and Customs everywhere, what a tremendous sight to see. Warren Haynes came down in his '39 Sedan. I haven't seen Warren since we were in the Chariots over 25 years ago with the same car. Amazing!

Once again, thanks for making it a fabulous day. And thanks to the Bay Area girls and guys (and I wouldn't forget you Chris, for the effort you put into the event). See you at the park next year, and tell your mates about the 'Tug in the Park'.

Jeff Napthali (Bay Area) debuted his chopped, nosed, raked shoebox spinner. Really turned some heads.

Warren Hayne's had his '39 Sedan at Stanwell Park 25 years ago.
