"A Prayer for our Brothers and Sisters"

Good Jesus, Whose loving Heart was ever troubled by the sorrows of others, look with pity on the souls of our dear ones in Purgatory. O You Who " loved Your Own " hear our cry for mercy, and grant that those whom You called from our homes and hearts, may soon enjoy everlasting rest in the home of Thy Love in Heaven.

Lord, hold tight to our brothers and sisters as they makes their way to your home. A trip we all will take one day. We pray for all our Brothers and Sisters that have come to their rest in the Hope of rising again to be with you in Heaven. The work we do often calls many of us home early. It is through you Lord that we get the Strength to continue in the Dangerous and Stressful job we do.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O, Lord. And let perpetual light shine on him.

Amen.

Do not stand at my grave and weep;
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.

When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there, I did not die.

Special Addition

Michael "Superman" Clemente

I am a 13 yr CO "veteran" with the Columbia County Sheriffs Dept. in Upstate NY. May 2002 we lost one of dearly loved and respected CO's, Michael "Superman" Clemente. Mike was on the job for 17 yrs. This man worked non-stop. Doubles day after day. You knew if Mike wasn't already
working the next shift and someone banged in, he'd be there. There were times he'd work a double, go home for a couple of hours, and be back for another double. Mike liked the money. He used sick time only once that I can remember. The doctor forced him to do so, he'd been stung by a bee.

Mike never went to the doctors. However, he appeared to be in good physical shape. Like the movie "Superman", Mike was very gentle and mild mannered. He was good with numbers; he had wanted to be an accountant. BUT, piss Mike off or if any CO was in need of back up, Mike was there. Sometimes he would appear out of nowhere. He was strong like an ox. I witnessed him more that once take down some big men.

On that terrible day in May 2002, Mike at the age of 43 suffered a massive heart attack while on the job. He was working an OT shift. He thought it was a full shift, however upon arrival to the facility found it was a half of shift. He was pissed about that. Mike went quietly. No one was aware that he had a heart attack. It was an inmate who noticed Mike wasn't looking well. That inmate hit an intercom button to get the attention of other officers. When other officers and the nurse arrived, Mike was long gone.

Mike never liked to be "fussed" over. We all were devastated at losing him. I had never seen so many people walking around with looks of total disbelief. The facility was strangely quiet. God help any inmate who set any of us off at that time. However, they all seemed to be on there
best behavior for some reason. Guess they knew, they better not piss us off. It was not uncommon to find a fellow officer off somewhere crying during this difficult time. Still to this day we talk about Mike and still someone will shed a few tears. Mike gone left a big hole gap in
our lives. Some were closed to him than others. Those who were the closest have not recovered and I don't believe ever will.

The dept did everything they could for the family. Mike never married, nor did he ever have a girlfriend to the best of our knowledge. He left behind his mother and older brother Tony. Mike lived to take care of them and make their lives comfortable. The service was a large and grand event. Something Mike would not have been happy about at all. Officers from our dept, Hudson police dept, and State Troopers all took turns standing next to Mike's coffin for the wake and funeral. Dept administrators from other counties as well as our own county attended the services for Mike. Former employees of the Sheriffs dept returned to pay their respects. Even former inmates who were touched by Mike's goodness, paid their respects. During this time, there were no boundaries of "Us" and "Them". All who came to say good-by to Mike were welcomed.

The day of Mike's funeral a color guard was assembled, the bagpipes played and the biggest of men were crying fiercely. For we had lost our friend, our brother. A member of our family had fallen due to the stresses and strains of the job. He was devoted to the job even thought he would state how much he disliked it. It's a job no one really likes. We just do it because it is secure, and for the benefits. No matter who told Mike he needed to slow down, he wouldn't do it. More than once he took an OT shift that I would have been forced for. By him taking that shift, I could go home to my son that night on time.

Mike is sorely missed by all of us. Our lives will never be the same. He touched us all in one-way or another. Rightfully so, we retired his badge number. Mike (Superman) Clemente's kryptonite was the job. Granted he wanted to work the OT, however his stress was more with the
administration then the inmates themselves. Since then I believe some us have taken a different perspective of the job.

This December Mike would have turned 45 yrs old. He would have been closer to our 25 yr and out retirement plan. No doubt Mike would have collected the biggest half-pay retirement check in the history of our dept.

Billy was probably one of the best people I have ever met in corrections! He took care of the Officers on his shift (when he was A.W.C. @ Elmira) as if they were his own kids! He was probably the easiest person in the world to confide in when you had a problem. He was the ideal supervisor in the tradition of being Firm, Fair and Consistent.

Christopher Gaffney , Correction Officer at Eastern CF. Known as the "Fonz". Gaffney was a real character, his friends say. Larger than life. I/we all will sadly miss Officer Jones, while I was there he was a member of the C.E.R.T. team there, and would do any thing for a fellow officer. It hit all of us who knew him hard!! We meet officers all the time in our career but not many do we remember as time goes by, the officers at Oneida will no longer hear the words "Romper Room Jones's" And know the officer we knew him to be. His memory will never pass !

Jim Prisella, Correction Officer at Livingston CF. He died October 21, 1999 at home, He leaves behind a wife and two children.

He had been a correctional officer since 8/89 and had been
one of the first officers at Livingston Correctional Facility when it opened in April of 1991.  He was loved by all his
comrades and respected by all the inmates on his cadre to the extent that they sent flowers not only to the funeral but also to my home and made a beautiful memorial card for us.

Jim was killed in a freak tractor accident in the woods of our 51 acre property.  The best we can figure out, he was up there to gather fire wood to help keep us warm this winter.  We are told he died very quickly.  Thank God he didn't suffer because we didn't find him until 9pm that night.  He loved to be up in the woods.  We live in the house that his dad built when Jim was 19. He had helped his dad to clear the land, landscape the yard, plant hundreds (literally) of Colorado Blue Spruce trees.  He loved this place best of anywhere in the whole world.

Jim was my best friend in the whole world. Really, Truly.  May 1st, 1999 - for my 40th birthday, he bought me a 1996 red Mazda Miata -- a convertible -- that he got to drive occasionally.  I know he enjoyed it as much as me.

He was also a great friend to the guys he worked with and anyone lucky enough to call him their friend. Dave White (another CO) and Jim had been taking flying lessons in a power parachute from Wayne Holden (still another CO) and we were going to buy him one this spring.

Jim was a great husband, father, friend, Correctional Officer.  The staff at Livingston CF are still finding it difficult to talk to me as they are grieving nearly as much as we are. His death was so sudden, so totally unexpected. When we left for work in the morning, he was fine and when we came home, he was gone.

Jim was an artist who often times depicted prison life and Correctional Officers in a type of comic way. He was a practical joker at work and often the cause of much mischief, I am told.  But he did a good job in his cadre -- many Friday's winning the inspection award.

I hope that some of this information can be used to help fill in his memorial.  We have two children - A daughter (28) who lives in Florida and a son (15) at home. Our son, Adam, would welcome any stories any other Correctional Officers would like to share about his dad.  We feel this would help him to someday know his dad as a person - not just a father - something that he won't get the opportunity to do.

Thanks again for your diligence and compassion in creating and maintaining this page.  As hard as it was to look at, it made me proud (again, and again) to be married to a CO.

Thanks! Belinda (Stoddard) Prisella

Wayne Potter, Correctional Officer at Groveland CF

Martin J. Ruff, Elmira CF

Larry Strauchen Correctional Officer/Sergeant at Wende Correctional Facility

Farewell Larry
You have fought your battle with cancer bravely and with dignity. Your loss will be felt by all that you have worked with over the years. I had the pleasure to work with you at Wende when you were an officer and will always remember the care you took to make sure your block "C" was always ready for your shift . You took your time to go to the block early everyday to get things ready for the officers on your shift. You were, in my opinion will always be one of the best Hall Captains I ever worked with. The coffee was always ready when your shift of officers came in after roll call, the paper worked checked and corrected for each gallery officer. I never heard a complaint from you, who always used logic when mayhem ran ramped. You shout down your block got the officers together and seen that all were attended to after any incident, paperwork completed and doubled checked before going up front. You never were raveled when the Sgt.'s wanted the paper work like yesterday, you stood your ground against anyone who questioned the blocks operation or the way you handled the responsibility as Hall
Captain. You made the rounds of the block several times a day and you were aware of the smallest changes in the inmates and you had a sense for trouble and headed it off on many occasions. I could only hope that those who knew you will appreciate your professionalism as an officer and your care for the officers you worked with. Even though I did not work as a block officer I swapped in the block because it was a pleasure to work with a Hall Captain and a man of your caliber. My Dearest Sympathy goes out to your Wife Carolyn and the rest of your family. May God hold a Good Bid Job for you in Heaven because you did your job here on Earth.

Andy Semintini, 44, Captain, passed away June 21st., after a long bout with cancer. He, along with Frank Caminitti, both friends, both good guys are finally together. They lost the fight. What we lost can't be measured by any ruler. Don't you think that all the bickering that takes place on the Hacknet pales in comparison. Love each other, respect each other, life sucks, man, it is too short, he was just 44 married with children he won't see grow up.. graduate, marry and have kids of their own.
Take a step back and smell the flowers, hug your wife, hug your kids. Call someone and tell em you love em..

The Final Inspection-Capt. Andy Semintini
· The Officer stood and faced his God,
· Which must always come to pass.
· He hoped his shoes were shining, Just as brightly as his brass.
· "Step forward now, officer, How shall I deal with you?
· Have you always turned the other cheek?
· To my church have you been true?"
· The officer squared his shoulder and said, "No, Lord, I guess I aint,
· Because those of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.
· I've had to work most
Sundays, and at times my talk was rough, and sometimes
· I've been violent because the jails are tough.
· But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep..
· Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got to steep.
· And I never passed a cry for help though at times I shook with fear and
· sometimes, God forgive me, I wept an unmanly tear.
· I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
· They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
· If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand.
· I never expected or had too much, but if you don't...I'll understand.
· There was silence all around the throne, where the saints often trod.
· As the officer waited quietly for the
judgment of his God.
· "Step forward now, officer.
· You've borne your burdens well.
· Come walk a beat on heaven's streets, You've done your time in hell".

Goodbye Andy
Richard Yarczower
PS. I am tired of burying my friends

Grant "Skip" Smaldone, died January, 5 1998, Grant Smaldone was a quiet, gentle but firm leader. I don't ever remember him promoting himself at any statewide Executive Board meeting. But, if you needed a vote for accountability ( Roll Call Vote), Grant was always there to be held accountable. For those of you on this net, who were in favor of reform issues, such as the reduction or the elimination of staff reps. and their replacement with labor attorneys, you have lost a LEADER. Grant was consistently the only President from the Central Region, who voted for reform issues. He was from the old school, as a local president your the voice for the majority of your local, not a self serving dictator.
I salute you, "GRANT SMALDONE"
