These 5 spoke 911 Fuch's seem to work pretty well. I got them already installed on the car from the previous owner. They were mounted with the 4 to 5 lug adapter plates. The plates are about 1" thick and the wheels have 185/65R15 Pirelli P6 tires on them (going to replace them with 195/60R15 Yoko A509's soon). They seemed to fit fine with no rubbing. I didn't like the adapters, didn't trust them. They are probably ok for say a stock VW where you won't go very fast but for a sports car I didn't want them.
A friend found at a swap meet and I bought a setup for 5 lugs. The 914 front rotors are redrilled and have studs added. For the rear they redrill the hubs and add 5 studs. You have to, or have someone, pull the rear hubs and reinstall them when done. I used this opportunity to put on new rear bearings. This let me get rid of the adapter plates. I'm not sure what the stock offset on the 911 Fuch's is, they still fit fine in the rear with the adapters gone, which let them sit back in under the fenders a bit more. I think the PO had rolled the fender lip to let them fit when the adapter plates were on.
For the front, when I put on the studded front rotors I'd bought I also put new front bearings on, cheap and easy to do while in there. Ran into one problem I hadn't anticipated. The stock 914 front rotor had that raised ring around the bearing cup, there I think to give something for the tire to rest on while you line up the holes for the lug bolts. After I'd got the rotors all mounted and went to put the 911 rims back on I found they wouldn't fit. The 911 rims have a smaller center hole and wouldn't go over that ring. I found out later that most places, when they are doing a 5 lug stud job on the rotors, will machine off that ring. I didn't want to pull the rotors off and try to get it machined off now. I bought a set of 911 spacers (18mm) from Troutman (he had 15mm for the same price and 15mm is the minimum to clear that ring, I got 18mm for a little extra space). I had the center hole of the spacers machined larger (to clear the 914 rotor ring which is larger than the 911 ) then could finally mount the front tires.
The spacers aren't a worry like the adapters were since they are just sandwiched between the rotor and tire. The adapter plates had mounted to the rotor with the original lug bolts and had 5 studs that the tire then mounted to. Because of the way they line up, one of the 5 studs line up with one of the original lug bolts. They just weld that stud to the top of that lug bolt. Not very secure. When I got the car, that welded lug bolt/stud for the front passenger side was gone, broken off.
Another option for the front that I've heard of, and was considering before I got the swap meet deal, is to use parts from a 911 front end. I don't know the exact models/years that will work but I believe they are around the same time frame as the 914's. You can replace the entire front end assembly or just the shock towers and rotors. This will let you use the 911 rotors and larger 911 brake calipers. Some of the 911 models that fit even had vented rotors. The one problem with studding the 914 rotors is that when they eventually wear out you have to buy new rotors and pay again to have them studded.
