Warrior of The Moon

Chapter Five

"Why is everyone always taking her from me?" Kakarot snarled, circling Vegeta. He had made several attempts to follow after Serena, to be blocked or cut off by his older brother and Vegeta.

"She's too young, Kakarot!" Vegeta tried to break through the Saiya-jin's red haze of fury.

Kakarot hesitated, confused by different memories. Some of them were of people he had once known and fought beside, while others were of beautiful gardens and a princess. "Serenity..." Shaking his head, "Move!"

"You cannot!" Vegeta roared, a spark of energy flying from his body. "She's but a child, as are you!"

"But..."

"Give her time, Kakarot. You're confused and frustrated, and for the first time you want something that you have no name for. Will you kill her?"

Kakarot paled, taking a step backwards. The last thing he wanted was to bring harm to his best friend, but... She had awakened something deep, primal and forgotten. He clutched his head and screamed. The images wouldn't leave, everything had been so perfect. His eyes flickered green and before Vegeta or Raditz could stop him, he was gone.

"What happened?" Raditz demanded.

"He's the one," Vegeta choked.

"Kakarot's the legend you spoke of? Are you...?"

"Did you not see?" Vegeta demanded.

"And the onna?"

Vegeta stared at Raditz helplessly. How did one stop a warrior that could easily kill them all? He had hoped Kakarot would be the one, and prayed that Serena was as strong as he thought her to be.

Turles wove through the crowds, a hand secure around Serena's wrist. She was exhausted, but he couldn't afford to stop. He hated downtown Tokyo, and even more the shopping areas. However, it served his purpose as he dove into the different stores. They passed a jewelry store, a large group of people going mad over some stupid sale.

"I had no idea jewelry was so popular," Serena commented. She moved closer to Turles, not liking the dark feeling creeping through her blood. It was like her dreams, only their was a mall in the place of a white castle. "Turles..." she whimpered in terror.

"Not now onna! We have to..." He stopped, watching in confused fear as people began to faint, too weak to move. Serena continued to back away, her fingers clenched tightly around Turles's arm. Turles could smell fear and... He snarled, thrusting the blond behind him. "Run, Serena!"

"Turles..." she started to protest, tears in her eyes.

A wave of dark energy attacked him, eager for his energy. He tried to punch it, but it only laughed and entered his body. "...just go!"

It was all happening, just like her dream. People would die and there was nothing she could do. "NOOOOOOOOO!" she shrieked, a gold cresent moon blazing to life. It thrust the energy away from Turles, his body covered in blood. He was weak and gray, but still strong enough to stand and head for Serena. Her blue eyes flashed, changing to a cold silver gray.

Turles had never seen anything like her, not even during his years of slavery with Frieza. His memories had returned with the blast of her golden energy and he had the strongest desire to protect this one female. Why? Why did he feel so strongly about protecting an onna? 'Because she's no onna,' he admitted to himself.

The silver locket, still clutched in her hand, pulsed with a life of its own, matching the fury of its holder. A voice called out to her, Serena knew it was Luna. 'Call out Moon Prism Power! Hurry, before the energy can attack again!'

Lifting the locket in her hands, Serena didn't question Luna. She had to do something. Serena couldn't watch the past repeat itself, to forever be covered in the blood of innocents. "MOON PRISM POWER!" Turles stared in awe, mezmerized by a world of colors. Red, Green, Blue, Orange and Silver surrounded her, melting away her school uniform to replace it with a blue skirt and white body suit. A gold tiara appeared on her forehead, white gloves on her hands and pink boots on her feet. Serena ended the transformation in a stance, her eyes cold and angry.

She ran into the jewelry store, avoiding the unconscious custmores in the door way and on the floor. Turles stayed close behind, spotting a woman with a blue face in the corner. Cowering on the floor was a young girl, a student in their class. "Molly?"

"Help me," she cried, tears streaking down her face.

"Who are you?" the creature hissed.

"You won't be alive long enough to care," she growled, grasping her tiara.

A wave of energy shot in her direction, but before it could connect, she was knocked heavily to the floor. Turles swore; could things get any worse? Kakarot hovered above Serena, his eyes pure red and his teeth pulled back in a snarl. Turles trembled at the sight; his brother was pure Saiya-jin and he was prepared to kill anything in his path. "Incredible."

"Attack when I give the signal," he growled in her ear.

Kakarot helped Serena to her feet, glaring at her new outfit. Cuping the plams of his hands together at his side, "Kamehameha!" Instinctively, Serena knew that was her signal, throwing her tiara at the monster. Their combined attacks dusted the monster and half the store. The stolen energy was given back to the customers and Turles.

"Kakarot?" Turles asked, trying to move between his brother and Serena.

"Don't," Kakarot warned. "I will not harm my best friend."

"Have your memories...?"

"Only images."

Serena was exhausted, moving away from Kakarot and Turles. All she wanted was her bed and warm blankets. Before she made it two feet, a brown tail snaked around her waist, holding her in place. "What are you, Serena?"

She sighed, feeling Kakarot's confusion and hurt. "A warrior of justice and your friend."

"I thought I knew you." Kakarot started to pull away, but she whirled and clutched at Kakarot desparately.

"Please, don't leave," she begged. "I'm still trying to understand myself. Please, Kakarot. Don't make me do this alone. You're my best friend, you've always been there. I promise, I won't push you away anymore!"

Kakarot touched her face, brushing away the large tears. She had looked so fierce moments before, but now she looked like normal Serena in a short uniform. He sighed, knowing he couldn't deny her anything. "You'll tell me everything?"

"Hai."

"Who are you?"

Serena searched for an answer, but her mind was strangely blank when Luna spoke. She leaped onto Serena's shoulder, purring loudly. "She is Sailor Moon, a warrior of the moon. Serena is slowly remembering her past, but they were returning to fast. I had hoped she would lead a normal and happy life, but our enemy has once again appeared, to repeat her cruel end."

"And you?" Turles demanded. His responsibility was to Kakarot, and if his idiot brother liked the crazy onna, then she too was under his protection. "Why must a girl fight these battles? What experience does she have?"

"Until now, the warrior Sailor Moon has not been seen since the creation of Lunaria so long ago. Serena is the second, the reincarnation of Selene. That's all I remember."

Serena felt her eyes closing, and while Luna, Kakarot and Turles argued about her responsibilites, she fell asleep. There was so much that needed to be said, but that would have to wait another day. In the shadows, unseen by the Saiya-jins or Sailor Moon was a masked warrior, a soft smile on his lips. He had seen her transformation, a piece of his memories returned to him. "Thank you, Serena. I will help set you free, and to save our friends."

The next afternoon, Serena sat in the arcade, playing the newest version of Sailor V. Normally she would have been fully into the game, but her mind wandered to Kakarot. He had missed school, and Turles refused to say anything. Was he still angry with her? She hadn't planned on becoming Sailor Moon.

Serena sighed, oblivious to the two shadows that hovered above her. "Why the long face, meatball head?"

She normally would have scowled, today she didn't care. Serena didn't have the heart for anything. Darien pulled out a chair and sat beside her, concern in his blue eyes. "Serena? What's wrong?"

"Nothing," Serena lied. She started to leave, but Darien grabbed her arm and shoved her back down. "Dar..."

"Don't lie to me Serena!" Serena flinched. Was she destined to anger everyone that ran across her path? His expression was a storm of emotion, the most she had ever seen him display at one time. He seemed to be truly worried about her. Taking her other side, was Andrew, the arcade guy for as long as she could remember. He was always there to greet her with a smile.

"You wouldn't understand," she whispered, praying that Darien would relent and leave her be.

"This wouldn't happen to concern a certain friend of yours, would it?"

"It's not his fault!"

"Isn't it," Darien growled, his anger rising by the second. "For the past month, things haven't been the same with you, and I'm sure there are plenty of reasons for it. Did you try to make amends with him yesterday?"

"I did, but then something happened. He thinks that I lied to him, that I'm keeping secrets from him. Darien," Serena choked, "I barely understand the changes myself, and I keep driving him away. We use to have so much in common. Now we're so far apart even when we sit close to each other in class."

"Don't I owe you a shopping trip," Darien asked, purposely changing the subject. Serena had a feeling the subject was far from closed, but like the man that he was, Darien was attempting to cheer her up. "Don't you guys have homework or something?" She giggled, wiping away the tears.

Andrew ruffled her hair fondly, "Nope."

Taking both their arms, Serena ran out of the arcade, happy to forget everything for a few moments. "Where to first?" Darien asked.

"You pick," Serena said. They took her to the amusement park, to various shops in the mall. She didn't ask them to buy anything, only that they be her friends. Darien swore to never expect her to tell more than she wanted, that she could reveal her secrets when she felt ready to do so. His eyes glinted dangerously. Kakarot was dangerously close to losing Serena. She needed her best friend, now more than ever. Darien would take her from Kakarot, and be damned of the consequences. He hated to see her cry, and even more the despair that grew each time he saw her.

'Dammit, she's only fourteen! She doesn't deserve this crap again!' Neither Andrew nor Serena saw the golden aura pulsing around Darien, nor his clothes shimmering between jeans and shirt, to full black armor with a sword at his side.

Kakarot found him in the gardens, sitting beneath an old oak tree. The nuns rarely allowed orphans to come here, but few of them were fourteen and older. Turles, Vegeta, Raditz and himself were the only teenagers yet to be adopted. Darien, himself had not been adopted, but he had been offered a job and had left the orphanage at sixteen. That was two years ago.

Now, Darien was eighteen, intelligent and accepted into one of the most prestige medical schools in the country. He had been offered a intership at Havard University in America, and wondered if Darien would go? "Vegeta?"

The quiet teen turned his head, acknowledging Kakarot's presence with only a nod. He seldom talked, and Kakarot wanted to know why. Kakarot had come to realize that they had all led another life, and that the three that silently guarded and watched over him had dark and violent pasts. Vegeta's seemed to be the worst of the three.

Vegeta never screamed in his sleep, but he would wake, drenched in sweat. His eyes were often haunted and he would look at his hands with disgust, anger and hatred. Vegeta deeply despised himself, but the others chose to follow him. Why? What was so special about Vegeta that his brothers were willing to risk their lives?

"I needed your adivse." Vegeta blinked in surprise. Not even Turles and Raditz ever asked for his help. They had too much pride, but Kakarot had grown up on Earth, learning the values of humans.

"Speak."

"Serena and her dreams; I was thinking about what she told us. I know the ones she speaks of."

Vegeta was immediately on his feet, his expression dark yet unreadable. "Explain."

"I'm not sure how I know, but... Last night I had a dream, more like a nightmare. Four women and one man, all protectors of Princess Serenity. Amy is one of them."

"Princess? She never mentioned anything about a princess."

"She doesn't remember, and Serenity hated her title and position." Vegeta smirked, he understood all too well her hatred of titles and courtesies. "What I can't figure out, is Sailor Moon? None of the legends mentioned her, nor could Serenity fight."

"What happened to her?"

"She died, soon after her royal guards."

"You say memories are returning of this time? I don't understand. You were on Earth when we found you."

Kakarot had a feeling there was more to where he came from, and Vegeta had finally remembered everything. Kakarot did recall a boy named Krillan and a desert bandit Yamcha. Other than that, there was nothing there that really called to him; not like the silver haired princess with her silver eyes. He strongly believed that Serena was that princess, but her hair was different.

"I've lived more than one life," he finally answered. Vegeta would have a difficult time believinog him, but it was the only explanation that made any sense. "I don't know how or why that I'm here, and my name was different then."

Vegeta was visibly shaken, not wanting to hear the rest. He knew Kakarot was different, powerful and another legend in the making. "The name?"

"Jekkanadar." Vegeta felt like he had been physically punched, all the breath knocked from his body. "Anything else?"

"No. Most of the past is still a blur, but Amy is someone that I'm certain of. I have to find the others, including the male." Kakarot said the last with contempt in his voice, and a hint of jealousy.

"Why? If their lives ended so badly, why not leave them be?"

"The Negaverse has been reawakened. If Amy is here, then it's safe to assume that the others are as well. They will be hunted and slaughtered. That was what Serena was trying to tell us that day."

"You think she's the moon princess?"

"Hai, but I'm not 100% certain. She different than before, her hair, her eyes and her personality."

"A dark past has a way of changing a person, Kakarot. Remember one thing if nothing else; Serena asked for none of this, don't force her to face it alone. All any of us want is a moment of peace, without fear and constantly looking over our shoulders for an enemy we can't name or see. She'll always feel the Negaverse, long after its been destroyed."

Vegeta lifted his head, revealing a hint of emotion; fear and regret. "Help her, Kakarot."

"Vegeta..."

Vegeta headed for his room, "She'll die..." His last words echoed in Kakarot's mind and all he could do was lie on his bunk and stare at the bare ceiling. There were so many unanswered questions, and his heart felt like it had been ripped from his chest.

"Serenity..."

Serena opened her door and greeted her mother. She started to head for her room, but a brown tail pulled her back. "Kakarot?" He was so close, and she thought she could lose herself in his gaze forever. Serena shook her head, trying to clear her clouded mind. "Mom and Dad, they'll get..."

"They went out five minutes ago. Your mother said I could wait for you here."

Kakarot slowly turned Serena to face him, trapping her with a strong arm. Serena blushed, but didn't pull away. "I thought... I mean you were..."

"I'm not angry, Serena." He rested his chin on the top of her head, not wanting her to see the pain. As he held her, Kakarot knew she was Serenity. With that knowledge, came a fierce protectiveness, directed towards the negaverse that threatened to kill her. "I wanted to ask you something."

"What?" He wouldn't allow her to look up. Kakarot held her tighter, as if she would suddenly vanish if he did. He seemed sad; why?

"Would you come to the olympics with me; this summer?"

Serena gasped. "Kakarot, I'd love to, but I don't have any..."

Kakarot laughed, finally able to release Serena and lean against the wall. "I have more than enough money Serena. According to our records, Vegeta, my brothers and I were left with quite an inheritance. Will you go?"

Luna had come out of her room, jumping to the table to await her response. The cat thought Serena should pay more attention to her responsibilities, but she also knew how fragile the girl's friendship was with this boy. To deny her this one desire, would destroy Serena and ultimately their mission. "Hai."

"To keep your parents off my back, I want you to invite Amy."

"Amy?"

"She is your friend, isn't she?"

"Hai!" Without warning, she flung her arms around Kakarot's neck and hugged him. "I'm glad you came by," she whispered. "I've missed you."

"We're best friends Serena. We may not always agree on everything, but know that I'll always be around when you need me to be. I have to go."

"No!" Serena didn't know why she wanted him to stay so badly, only that she felt completely safe when he was around. He had saved her from the bullies, had helped her with her homework, and despite the past few weeks, he had stuck by her.

"Serena, it's late."

"I have a sleeping bag. You can have the bed; please stay. Promise you won't leave!"

Kakarot growled, but followed her upstairs. Serena locked the door to her room, making sure to let Luna in before she crawled into her sleeping bag and fell asleep. The nuns would have closed the doors to the orphanage, leaving Kakarot no choice but to stay the night in Serena's room.

Luna jumped onto the bed, studying Kakarot closely. "I feel as if I should know you," she finally said.

"Are all her guardians warriors?"

Luna gaped at Kakarot. "You know of them?"

"She mentioned them the day I found you by the trash."

"Hai; Sailor Mercury, Sailor Venus, Sailor Mars, and Sailor Jupiter."

"What about the Prince of Earth, Endymion?"

"I didn't know about him," Luna gasped.

"Luna, I don't like Serena fighting. However, I don't want a repeat of the past."

"Kakarot?" Luna's head hurt; there was something she should know about this man, but it continued to allude her.

Gently, he lifted her onto his lap, stroking her soft fur. Luna purred, quickly drifting to sleep. "I will help you find them, Luna. Let Serena have a few moments of happiness. Her death was not a painless one."

Luna trusted Kakarot, her eyes closing. Serena's pillows were soft, softer than the ones provided by the orphanage. Her bed was made of down feathers, giving way to his larger weight. For the first time since he could remember, he truly slept. His last thoughts were of Serena.
