A Common Thread

Chapter Three

Tranquility never made it too school, enjoying the morning and afternoon sun. When did everything stop being important to her? She had never really liked school, but because she had been an orphan, the nuns had forced her to go. It was necessary if she wanted to survive in the competitive world.

She had so many questions, and so few answers. If Sesshomaru was from the past, why didn't she feel him here? Was there truly a multi-billionaire with his name? Did he die? The last thought terrified her. Tranquility didn't understand the desire to protect the Western Lord, knowing he was fully capable of handling himself. He was powerful, a law of his own.

His very aura demanded attention and respect, and if he wanted something, he couldn't imagine not having it. Finding an isolated park, Tranquility sat beneath a tree and fell asleep, bathing in the warm sun. Her auburn hair flew around her body, lifted by the wind.

She was unaware of the shadow that fell over her, or the strong arms that easily lifted her off the ground and carried her away. Sesshomaru watched as she slept, not wanting to wake her. He had waited patiently enough, but he had no choice but to return to his time, and to ensure that Rin was still safe. Jaken could watch her, but even he was no match against the wolf demons that would kill him or the child.

After he had left Artemis and Serenity, he had been deep in thought. Sesshomaru had thought of giving her more time, but he couldn't risk that he would run into his future self. A part of him knew that he should leave her here, but he couldn't wait another five hundred years.

Tranquility no longer wanted to attend this school of hers; she was simply to use to the routine schedule of her life. Sesshomaru smirked; he was about to turn her world upside down. Tranquility would be to occupied to focus on her past, or the loneliness she had felt growing up as a child among the humans. Rin wanted a mother, and he had no problems with letting Tranquility fill that role.

He already knew that Tranquility would love the child, and Sesshomaru couldn't find it in himself to part with the human brat. Somehow she had grown on him. Sesshomaru sensed her loneliness and vulnerability. She was slowly starting to believe that he would stay in her life, but a small part of her would always feel that she will be left alone in the end.

Sesshomaru had every intention of surrounding her mind and heart with his presence. Even if he had to keep her glued to his side for the next several years, he would rid her of this stupid notion. Tranquility was a fighter, he could feel it in the muscles of her arms and legs as he carried her towards the wooden well.

Despite her compassionate nature, humanity had left its mark on her. They hated what they couldn't understand, yet she still chose to protect them. Sesshomaru wanted to keep her locked away from their influence, but even he knew that would slowly kill what spark of laughter she had left.

Yes, he would take her from this world. Sesshomaru, in his own home and with more time, would be able to give her all the attention she desired and more. Tranquility would no longer desire what she had never known. It would be hers without a second thought for himself. Sesshomaru began to wonder if it was such a good idea for her to remember the past?

It had been brutal to them both, and she could finally be happy. Her last moments could possibly destroy her, and Sesshomaru would not allow such a thing. She had no need to remember, especially when he was incapable of changing or fixing the damage the humans had done.

Sesshomaru knew with a doubt that Artemis would follow with Serenity. He also had a strong feeling that Rei would as well, unable to separate herself from her best friend. The fire senshi had always been extremely loyal. It just surprised him that it was towards the older sister more than the younger one.

Tranquility needed to know her sister, and he would not deny her. Moving to the well, he looked at her peaceful face, making the decision for her. Other demons would accept what the humans could not. Artemis was about to shake things up in Serenity's group of protectors, and doubt he would give them a say in his decision.

InuYasha hovered at the door, not liking the color of Rei's skin. She had turned an ashen gray, sweat soaking her clothes. Kagome didn't know what to do. "She smell different," he growled.

"What are you talking about?"

"I'm not sure, but I think we should take her to Kaede."

"Shouldn't we let the modern doctors help her?"

The door crashed open, throwing InuYasha towards the other side of the room. He came up, holding Tetsaiga in his hands. A blond slid off a large panther's back, running towards her friend. "Rei, what's wrong?"

"Tran..." she whimpered, thrashing in her sleep. Even unconscious, she couldn't stop thinking of her best friend, wanting to keep her safe.

"Artemis?"

"Dammit," InuYasha roared. "She's dying! Kaede is the only one close enough to help her."

"He's right," Artemis growled. There isn't a doctor for at least twenty miles."

"Tran... She can help..." Rei desperately wanted to be with her best friend. If she was going to die, it would be with her.

"Artemis," Usagi begged. "Please help her."

The panther leapt onto the bed, waiting for Kagome and Usagi to place the dying girl onto his back. He didn't know if he could save her, but Artemis would never give up trying. His emerald gaze fell on the girl he had sworn to protect, "I'm not leaving you behind."

She hesitated, but only for a moment. Pushing aside her fear, she approached her guardian and climbed up behind Rei. She was surprised to see golden stripes on his fur, amazed at the satin feel. "Is Luna like you?"

"No. She is a cat of Mau. I only took their form to become your guardian during the Silver Millennium. It didn't matter. Queen Selinity never listened to a word I told her anyway."

"Are you a youma?"

Artemis snarled at the insult, but had to remind himself that he had never discussed his origins to her. "What does your instincts tell you?"

"Youmas have a negative energy, something that Sesshomaru and yourself lack."

"We are youkai, the hanyou over their half-human. I'm surprised Inutashio would mate with a human."

"Usagi, this must be your choice. I will not return here."

"But..."

"Your fate was never my decision and I will no longer call you by a human name. You are Serenity, Princess of Lunaria. As long as I have the ability to change your destiny, I will do so. Join me, Serenity, and I swear that you will laugh and smile again. I will allow you to become the normal girl you long to be."

"The other senshi!"

"The senshi are protected by Endymion and other guardians I have not mentioned. Do you not wish to meet your older sister?"

A memory suddenly came to her, one that she thought forgotten. A girl of four was holding her baby sister, watching the couple that would take her away. They had not wanted Tranquility, but she wanted Serenity to be loved and safe. Pulling away, she gave Serenity a sad smile. "My little Sere, you must go. They'll give you a good home, better than here. You deserve to be happy and loved."

Tran stepped back, trying not to cry. "Promise that you'll forget. I don't want to see you sad. It's better this way."

"Big sis, big sis! Why won't you come with? I don't want to be without you!"

Tran shrugged, as if it mattered nothing at all. "I wasn't wanted, little Sere." Around her neck, Tran gave her sister a red star, warm against her pale skin. "It will keep you safe at night. If you find that your sad or frightened, just hold it in your hands and close your eyes."

Serenity hugged her sister, later taken by the young couple that had adopted and changed her name. Tears streamed down her face and she looked at the red necklace still around her neck. She had forgotten her sister. "Tran..."

Artemis saw the decision clearly in her blue eyes, already moving towards the well. She was becoming the Lunarian she had once been. In two strides, he was traveling through the blue light, landing on all four feet. Kagome and InuYasha were close behind. "Stay with them, Serenity. I can travel faster with Rei alone."

"Do you think my sister can help her?"

"Actually, it will be Sesshomaru. He has the sword that can bring her back to life. I don't think we can save her."

Serenity slid off his back, watching Artemis disappear. "Be careful," she whispered.

"Kagome, InuYasha," a monk greeted them. "You're back." Miroku was the first to notice Serenity and gaped. She was beautiful. "Who's she?"

"Miroku, Sango; I'd like you to meet Serenity. She's from the future, and it's a long story. I don't even know where to begin."

"Is Sesshomaru still in your time?" Sango asked, worry in her dark eyes.

"No. I think he took my friend and returned a few hours ago. Apparently my cousin has a group of friends that are unique to our time. A demon panther is trying to find Sesshomaru, hoping to save my cousin's life."

Serenity traveled around the small hut, curious about its simplicity. "Where are we?"

Miroku took the girl's hand, giving her a warm smile. "Don't allow all of this to frighten you child. You are in Feudal Japan."

"Miroku, don't even think about it!" Sango shouted, grabbing Miroku by the ear. "Serenity, you need to watch him. He has a bad habit of asking a girl to marry him and can't seem to keep his hands to himself."

Serenity blushed, but couldn't help but smile. A little blur jumped into Kagome's arms, asking her a thousand questions. "I thought you weren't coming back," he whined, tears in his large eyes.

"Shippo, you're being silly. Of course I'll come back, at least until the well closes completely."

"Do we go after your friend, Kagome?"

"I think we should wait for Artemis to return," Kagome sighed, no longer sure of anything. "In the mean time, let's continue searching for the jewel shards."

An old woman joined them, staring at Serenity with curiosity. "Child, you are a powerful demon with Miko powers. How can this be?"

Everyone stared at the blond in shock, their mouths hanging open. InuYasha snorted. He had already known that she was different, but Kaede had brought up a nagging question. Kagome was like this girl and Rei. Was she too a demon? He decided to wait and see what happened? It would make his day to see the expression on his brother's face if Kagome were a demon instead of human.

Serenity smiled and bowed, allowing her gold, crescent moon to show itself. There were a few gasps of awe and fear, but Shippo was the first to approach and touch the mark. "Are you like Sesshomaru?" He asked. "You don't smell like a dog demon."

She laughed, picking up the small demon child. "You're cute, but no. I am half Lunarian and half Solarian."

"They vanished nearly five hundred years ago," InuYasha whispered in awe. "Weren't they all slaughtered?"

"Hai. My mother, the only survivor, made a wish and had everyone sent to the future. She had hoped that we would have normal and peaceful lives. I was reborn along with my older sister Tranquility. I was adopted at three and until yesterday, had forgotten about her."

"Solarians are said to be extremely powerful. Can you fight like them?"

"I'm more like the Lunarians. I hate to fight and would rather spare my enemy than kill them."

"What is the Panther?" Kagome asked her. "I've never seen a demon like him."

"I think he's like my sister, but a full Solarian."

"He must have been the one Tranquility spoke about. She mentioned seeing him in a dream."

They continued to talk throughout the night, waiting until morning before they decided to search for the jewel shards. Serenity prayed that Artemis would find help for Rei.

She was covered in thick furs, safe and warm. Where was she? Tranquility remembered falling asleep in the park, but now she was in a large chamber with a four post bed and red and blue rugs on the floor. Sitting up, she blushed, bringing the blankets back up. "Where are my clothes?" she growled.

On the other side of the bed, she noticed a purple and black kimono, the colors matching her eyes. Her school uniform was nowhere to be found and with a sigh of frustration she dressed in the silky clothes. With a purple sash, she tied back her hair before she stepped into a giant hallway.

"This place is huge." There wasn't a person in sight, Tranquility exploring the castle. She saw hundreds of tapestries upon the walls, all of them of Sesshomaru or another figure that had a strong resemblance to the Western Lord. Tranquility felt a connection to the tall demon lord, touching his strong facial features. He had been like a father to her.

"Inutashio..."

A gasp and the sound of cloth hitting the floor, captured Tranquility's attention. She turned, seeing a small woman standing close, her features almost perfect. She's beautiful. Tranquility felt insecure around the other female, already walking in another direction. The woman grabbed her arm, a whimper of fear escaping her throat.

"My lady, you mustn't wander. Lord Sesshomaru will be most upset if you were hurt or captured. He has many enemies."

Tranquility laughed. She had been alone almost her entire life, that she couldn't comprehend being afraid. She was a fighter, and couldn't rely on someone to be there if she were attacked. "If your Lord Sesshomaru had wanted me to stay put, he should have not given me the opportunity to leave." The woman hissed in terror, jerking back as if Tranquility would be struck down at any moment.

"Why do you fear Sesshomaru?"

"Everyone except for Rin fear Lord Sesshomaru."

"Who is Rin?"

"She is a human child. He refuses to give her up."

"A human?" Sesshomaru was becoming more and more of a mystery. He claimed to hate humans, yet he had chosen to protect one. Again the female tried to stop Tranquility from exploring further.

"Please, Lord Sesshomaru will be extremely angry."

"Will he hurt you?" There was a hint of anger in her voice, a purple light building around her slim form. The girl backed away, afraid of the strange girl.

"What are you?"

"Answer my question?" Tranquility demanded. "Why do you fear Sesshomaru? Will he harm you?"

"He's killed thousands, especially those that dare to question his commands."

Tranquility trembled in suppressed fury. Slowly she calmed, ready to cross that bridge if and when it occurred. True, Sesshomaru was demanding and aggressive, but Tranquility truly believed he would not kill without reason. Perhaps it was his reputation that kept people from stepping over the lines he had drawn.

She refused to allow fear to control her and shook off the woman's hand. Sesshomaru didn't want her a prisoner, nor did he want her to fear him. Taking a deep breath, she followed the hallways until she stepped into a large garden, thousands of roses assaulting her senses at once.

"It's just like my dream." For the first time, she was truly happy, feeling at home in this new and strange place. Petals fell in her hair, and the clouds slowly passed over head. Who needed school or the pressure of the future? Sesshomaru cared for none of these things.

With a cry of happiness, she began to spin and dance, gliding through the beautiful garden. Her feet were bare, feeling the soft silk of the petals. This is where she wanted to be.

Sesshomaru had left Tranquility in the west wing, safe in his bed of furs. Her clothes had been replaced, knowing the unwanted attention her school uniform would bring. He thought of waiting until morning to ask her to change, but Tranquility would more than likely resist the change and Sesshomaru had no desire to battle her over such a matter.

She did have a room that use to connect to his own, but he had long ago given it to Rin. No, she would remain where he can protect her. She slept deeply, unaware of him removing her school uniform and tearing it to shreds. Taking the blankets, he covered her body. Tranquility was attractive, but Sesshomaru decided to wait until she had made her first transformation.

Jaken had returned to the castle a week ago, knowing Sesshomaru would return for them eventually. Sesshomaru ordered that the servants watch Tranquility, but he refused to stay away for long. Only he would be adequate in keeping her from harm. He quickly traveled through the halls, finding Rin playing in the library.

Rin was so happy to see him, she threw her arms around his leg, ignoring his growl of protest. Sesshomaru hid his smile. Rin would never fear him and he had learned to quit trying. "Lord Sesshomaru! Are you safe? I thought the wolf demons took you away. They came near our camp several times."

Sesshomaru growled. Koga knew better than to allow his wolves near Rin. "Did they harm you?"

"No, Koga was near and he ordered them to leave us alone."

"Rin, I have a surprise, but you are to be on your best behavior."

"Really, for me?"

"I will introduce you to her later."

"Can I play with Jaken until then?" She asked.

"What?" The demon protested in outrage. Why should he cater to the human child?

Sesshomaru shook his head. "I have another playmate, and for now I want you to eat and dress more appropriately. As for Jaken, I wish for you to deliver a message to the Eastern Lord. Tell him to come to my castle."

Rin was bubbling with excitement. "Will I like my new playmate, Lord Sesshomaru?"

"Hai." After he had assured that Rin was taken care of, Sesshomaru went to wake Tranquility. The stars were still out and he was positive she'd be in her rooms. Seeing the empty bed, Sesshomaru howled in rage, already tearing down the halls searching for her.

Servants scattered in terror, watching the demon lord race by through the castle hallways. Her scent led him to the gardens, and he found her, buried in a sea of petals. She was laughing, swatting at the flower petals raining down on her.

Sesshomaru approached, parting the falling petals with his large form. She saw him at the last moment, too late to escape his pounce. Tranquility didn't run or scream. Instead she giggled, giving him a true smile and circle of flowers around his neck.

"They said I should be afraid of your anger," she teased, stroking his muzzle. "I doubt seriously you would harm me." Sesshomaru snarled, offended that she not fear him as she should. Tranquility only laughed. "You can't be the big bad wolf and my protector as well, Sesshomaru." He nipped her neck in outrage. Sesshomaru was nowhere like the wolf demons.

Quicker than lightning, she was on his back, Sesshomaru racing through the Western Lands, the moon and stars as their guide. He knew every inch of his realm, and with a leap, he dislodged Tranquility from his back and watched her fly into a wide creek.

Tranquility squealed in protest, throwing a wave of water in his face. The water was cold, especially in the winter months. Sesshomaru growled, lunging in after the little minx, but found her already gone. What was she doing? A burst of laughter was his only warning, Tranquility knocking him over. It was hilarious to watch the large dog demon trying to pick himself back up, but his coat was heavy with water and held him down.

Again she dodged his attempt to capture her, swimming around in the water like a fish. The sight was strange to him, a trait she must have picked up from the modern era. Kagome was capable of swimming in water as well, not controlled by the fears and superstitions of his world.

Tranquility's speed and stealth were incredible, a reminder of what she had been and could yet become again. Never! His youkai snarled in protest. It wouldn't allow her to be taken again. As far as the Western Lord was concern, he would fight her enemies, keeping her from harm's way.

With a surge of strength, Sesshomaru twisted his body and pinned her in the shallow water, his paws on her arms. She was trapped, her hair fanning out in the water. Tranquility laughed, trying to squirm away from his tongue and sharp teeth. "This is hardly fair, Sesshomaru!"

His sharp teeth grazed her neck, a warning. Tranquility had yet to show signs of fear or submission. She was always giving him new surprises. In the past it was one constant battle after another. This side was strange, but not unwelcomed. Other than the lack of attention and love, Tranquility's life had been relatively calm compared to the one that had taken her.

Sesshomaru paused. She had been like this in the past, but he had forgotten. It was before their parents forced them to marry. Tranquility loved to laugh and play, a contrast to the warrior everyone respected and feared. She was too trusting, a lot like Rin.

Perhaps that is why he had chosen to keep the orphaned child. 500 years ago, he had lost the ability to feel compassion or to forgive. Tranquility shivered, cold from the water and the wind. In her dreams, she had seen this form, but he was much bigger in reality and his fur was so soft; even if he did smell like a wet dog.

His ears flattened, hearing her last thought. She had been getting better about blocking him out, but had purposely allowed him to catch this one. Tranquility knew she should have been afraid of Sesshomaru, but he had come when she had needed someone the most.

Did it matter that Sesshomaru wasn't human, that he claimed the same about her? She tried to move, but Sesshomaru had already settled on top of her, content at keeping her squirming.

Unable to control himself, Sesshomaru bit down on her shoulder, drawing a yelp of pain and blood. It trickled down her shoulder as he licked it away, purring softly as she growled in protest. He had left his mark. "You're impossible, Sesshomaru! I am not a child!"

With little effort, Sesshomaru shifted forms, still keeping her beneath him. He wrapped a strand of long hair around his wrists, his teeth pulled back. Tranquility knew he would nip at her bared shoulder again. "I agree. You're a rebellious female that knows no fear for her own safety."

"I will not be locked away like some kind of criminal, Sesshomaru. It would kill me."

"You're under my protection," he growled, as if his response answered her protest.

"Sesshomaru, I need my freedom. Please, don't take it away."

The Western Lord couldn't believe he was giving in to her so easily. If she had tried to battle him in a fight or with words, he would have been more able to deal with it. Tranquility, instead, was sadly asking him to allow her the freedom she wanted.

With a sigh, he lifted her off the ground and headed home. He would finish this discussion after they were both in dry clothes and warm. Half way towards the castle, a body dropped in front of them, his eyes snapping in unrestrained rage. Tranquility thought him very young, but his fury was very real and directed towards Sesshomaru.

He crouched, baring his fangs for the kill. "Sesshomaru, you insult us by daring to mate with a mortal! Have you forgotten?" Koga roared.

Sesshomaru had always avoided a fight with the wolf demon, mainly out of respect for Tranquility. However, this was beyond stupidity. Koga dared to question his motives? "Do you not chase after that Miko?"

"It annoys the half-breed! I would never claim that girl for a mate!"

Tranquility struggled to get free, but Sesshomaru simply gripped her tighter. She was furious, prepared to challenge Koga. He was amused by her willingness to protect him, but Koga would kill her before he realized who she was. "Stop," he warned softly.

She sighed, knowing it was pointless to argue. Tranquility had wanted to be protected, but this was insane! "Tread carefully, Koga. Know what you attack before you strike. You, better than anyone, know I would never choose a human."

Koga slowly relaxed, his eyes not leaving Tranquility. It was her eyes that triggered the memory, followed by her familiar scent. "Tran..." Gradually, Sesshomaru allowed her to touch the ground, not quite releasing her until he was positive Koga wouldn't attack.

Her eyes widened. She knew this demon, not only from her dreams but deep within her soul. They had been inseparable as children, always close after a battle that had nearly killed them both. She looked at his right shoulder and gasped. It was him! The scar was proof. "Koga."

The wolf demon took a step closer, his entire body shaking. At first sight, he had mistaken her as a human female. His nose was telling him otherwise. Their gazes connected and for a long time, neither said anything. A deadly battled flashed in both their minds, followed by blood and pain. It lasted for hours, interrupted by a dragon that had forced them to make a truce and kill the creature together.

Their two races had been enemies for centuries, but was ignored as the two formed an unbreakable friendship. As a result, she was permitted to visit the Eastern Lands on Earth. That was a different age, when he had been a prince and this girl's guardian. "You're her, but where is your birth mark?"

Reluctantly, Sesshomaru released her. He had no doubt of her loyalty to him, and the mark would discourage any demon that wished to claim her. Tranquility took a hesitant step closer, her hands shaking. She had been ten during that battle, the same age she had been when she had saved Kagome from a group of gang members.

It confused her. How could she have lived two different lives? Tranquility didn't bother trying to understand. Nothing else made much sense to her at the moment. All she needed to know was that Koga had been her closest friend for years and with a cry she went to him.

It felt right and like she had finally come home. Koga, unable to speak or function, he could only hold her. This was a dream, wasn't it? How could Tranquility possibly be here? They had seen her lifeless body. He sniffed, realizing she had yet to make the change, his gaze flying towards Sesshomaru.

Koga struggled to understand, but even the demon lord was having a difficult time coping with the situation. She was their Tranquility, but she was different. Until she gained the powers of her youkai form, Tranquility was vulnerable. With a sigh of regret, he pulled back, stroking her face before he gave her back. "You should do as Sesshomaru asks. I will return soon."

She was not the Tranquility he had known. Could she still hold her own in a battle? He didn't want to find out, and for once the two demon lords were in agreement. They would do everything in their power to keep her from harm and trouble.

Tranquility was exhausted by the time Sesshomaru placed her in bed. She had finally found the third person in her dreams and Tranquility couldn't have been happier. He started to leave, but was halted by a pair of arms wrapping around his chest. "Will you leave me alone?" she asked, a tremble in her voice.

"You will not come to harm here." Sesshomaru needed to check on Rin before he slept, but her grip only tightened. He needed to be firm with her, but Sesshomaru found it impossible to deny her wish for him to stay. Even in the past, they had never shared the same bed for more than a few hours. The other rooms had been hers, but it seemed she would only sleep if he were near.

Sesshomaru found himself dreaming of the past, returning to find her room empty and the sheets stained with blood. She was dead before he had a chance to find her and the humans laughed at his grief. Not one had survived, nor the villages that they came from. No, she would continue to sleep in his bed, where he could guard her. Rin could keep Tranquility's old rooms.

Kagome was looking for a place to bathe when a pair of arms grabbed her from behind. "InuYasha!" She would have told him to sit, but Kagome had long since lost that ability. If it hadn't been for the beads of submission, Sesshomaru would have killed InuYasha. It had taken her a long time to believe that he wouldn't leave, no longer obligated to stay, but he had stubbornly remained by her side.

InuYasha tried to say it was because of her ability to sense the jewel shards, but they both knew he was lying. He hated to see Kagome hurt and had often rescued her from death. Even after she had nearly killed him, he had forgiven her. Did he love her? He never said.

The Hanyou nipped at her ear, hearing her cry of surprise. He smirked. He had used the last couple of weeks to think. Yes, Kikyo had been a part of his life, but she had also turned on him. Unlike Kagome, no spell controlled her, nor did she give InuYasha a chance to explain. Kagome accepted him as a half-demon, wanting nothing more than what he could provide. Kikyo would only have InuYasha if he were human.

InuYasha would never be able to protect Kagome if he were human, and he couldn't take the chance that he would kill her if he became a full fledged demon. He sighed, having found an inner peace that wouldn't have been possible with Kagome around.

After the jewel had been restored, he would convince Kagome to stay in Feudal Japan. Hopefully the choice was theirs to make. InuYasha wanted her, but how did he find the words to tell her? Instead, he continued to bite at her neck, purring loudly. No longer having the ability to sit him, he found it easy to take advantage of the Miko.

Kagome's eyes were wide with shock, trying to understand InuYasha's sudden behavior. His grip was possessive and his claws had lengthened until they held her in place. "Need any help," he whispered. Kagome blushed a deep red, but couldn't pull free. InuYasha was impossibly strong and he only laughed at her attempt.

A cough brought them back to reality, InuYasha growling at the interruption. Did he have to drag Kagome off to be alone with her? Sango raised a brow, daring InuYasha to say something. He bared his fangs before he released Kagome, clearly upset. Serenity watched the Hanyou disappear beyond the trees, stomping in the branches above. "Is he always like that?"

"He is when he doesn't get what he wants," Sango said, already heading for the hot springs. "InuYasha has liked Kagome for several months; I'm surprised it's taken him this long to show it."

"You knew," Kagome whispered, still feeling the touch of his hands.

"All of us did. You mean you didn't? Kagome, InuYasha can't function unless you're here where he can protect you better."

"He sounds like Sesshomaru," Serenity said, causing both women to burst out laughing. "What? Can't you see the similarities?"

"Serenity," Kagome choked between bursts of laughter, "I would never tell either of them that."

"Sesshomaru isn't that bad," Serenity said. "He's just very demanding about getting his way."

"She does have a point. InuYasha hates be questioned and never takes no for an answer," Sango admitted.

Kagome was very quiet as they bathed, worried about her cousin. Rei had gotten sick before, but never like this. A hand touched her shoulder, "Believe that she'll pull through Kagome."

"We've been through so much together," she whispered.

Serenity smiled sadly, "I know all to well what you mean. Rei is always so confident and our personalities are nothing alike. Still, she grows on you."

"You're one of the friends she told us about. She said you were always so cheerful, always late to class and never serious about anything."

"If that were only true. When I needed to be, I was very serious." Serenity told them about their battles as Sailor Senshi, leaving Sango and Kagome speechless. They were all so young, Sango thought, yet they've suffered more than most veteran warriors.

Serenity gave them a smile, "We have to hope that everything will be good in the end. I won't give up, not if there's still a possibility that I can win." The others agreed, relaxing in the hot springs.

Serenity watched the others sleep. Now that her memories had been fully restored, she couldn't remember a time when Artemis hadn't been a part of her life. He had always been in the shape of a house cat, not the Solarian Panther he now chose to be. Serenity found herself wanting to know more about her faithful guardian.

InuYasha had been impressed by Artemis. He had told her that Solarians were feared by most demons and with good reason. His mother had told him about their race and how they rarely lost a battle. Were they as strong as InuYasha made them out to be? Serenity wanted to ask Artemis, but he was still so far away.

Artemis sank to the ground, exhausted and still no where close to catching up with the dog demon. He had been running for two days, forgetting how far the Western Lands were. Rei was so weak, but he couldn't find the cause. The woman was Serenity's closest friend, like Tranquility was to Kagome and Rei. It seemed that the Solarian warrior was a common thread to them all. She was too important to lose.

He needed to keep going, but he was weak and hungry. Unable to stay awake, he fell into a deep slumber. From the woods, several forms surrounded the Panther and Rei, a few growling in fear and hatred. Why was a demon helping a human? They would bring them to Koga; he would deal with them.

He woke, finding himself confined by ropes and vines. Artemis tried to move, but it was impossible. He roared, straining at his restraints. Where was Rei? She was nowhere to be seen, sending him into a killing frenzy. He screamed, bit at the ropes and vines. Razor claws dug into the earth, feeding his blinding rage. A vine snapped, quickly followed by the rest.

The few wolves that had been unlucky enough to be on guard, barely dodged his powerful paws. He released another roar, the color of his eyes pure red. He set the forest floor on fire, taking another pass at the frightened pack. These wolves were small in comparison to their leader, the oldest and strongest. Koga came flying in, taking Artemis on with a explosion of claws and fangs.

Blood sprayed the circle of on lookers, leaving them trembling at the ferocity of their battle. It was like a river, there was so much blood. Both were suffering heavy blows, but the enraged Panther showed no signs of stopping. All of Artemis's mind was shrouded in a red haze of rage, his only thought death and destruction.

A heavy blow sent Koga crashing against a tree, breaking a rib. Koga was far too old to give up to the Solarian so easily. The pack could only stare in horror, too young to remember the last time Koga had battled such a powerful opponent.

Koga would not hesitate to protect his pack, remembering all to well the fury of Sesshomaru when they had killed the human child under his protection. Artemis was the same, blinded by his rage and failure to protect Rei. He had sworn to guard the sailor senshi and Princess Serenity. If they could only see their guardian at that moment. There was nothing of the old Artemis they would have recognized.

The change would have horrified the sailor senshi. He was no longer calm nor ditzy. Artemis was a true Solarian, giving back everything he was taking from Koga. He would not pretend to be what he was never meant to be. Koga would know Artemis anywhere, even if he was surprised to see him alive and in his forest.

He thought his wolf patrol had gone mad when they came speaking of a large white panther with golden stripes on his fur. They had taken the human from him, but Koga had a strong feeling that there was more to the story. He had just arrived in time to stop Artemis from slaughtering his entire pack.

Koga had often seen Artemis in battle, but never did he dream that he would be the one to face him. The only other to come out of a battle alive with the Solarian feline, was Sesshomaru's father. That battle only turned out in Inutashio favor because of Tranquility's interference. Koga doubted that Artemis could recognize him in his killing rage.

Breaking a part, the two circled, searching for a weakness. Artemis sprang for the final blow, stopped by a blinding light that glowed for thousands of leagues. All who looked at the sky, would speak of the red flame for months. Only those in the forest would know that it came from a large Phoenix, her feathers spread in a twenty foot span on both sides.

After the light faded, she landed between the two demons. Artemis hesitated, an unnatural calm surrounding his heart and mind. You mustn't fight him, Artemis. Tranquility is tied to him, as she is tied to us all. Please, do not be the cause of more pain.

Guilt cut through the rage, Artemis stepping away from Koga. His eyes were once again a deep emerald, their coats covered in blood. Slowly they changed shapes, standing in their humanoid forms. Koga's brown tail wrapped around his shoulder, wishing that he could seek the comfort of his den. He hated to admit it, but the fight with Artemis had severely drained him.

If the battle had continued, Artemis would have won. It had been several centuries since he had felt this aura, his mind connecting with the powerful creature. She was beautiful, her large wings creating a wind of warmth. The Phoenix was said to no longer exist, wiped out by the negaverse. They possessed incredible gifts, able to be reborn from the ashes of their death.

Certain that they would no longer fight, she descended, folding her light wings against her sides as she grew to stand before them. Long raven hair fell to her knees, red marks on her wrists and cheeks. Artemis understood the meaning of her transformation, his heart growing cold in shock. "Rei..."

Rei quickly went to the Solarian, wrapping him in a hug. She wasn't surprised when Artemis hesitated before he returned it. "Oh, Artemis. Stop blaming yourself for events that are beyond your control. I'll admit, I didn't understand what was happening, not until after I was re-born as the phoenix."

Koga stared at the woman in astonishment. His pack had taken him to the tent they had placed her in. He didn't understand her illness, never having seen a demon become sick before. She had no poison in her blood and he had been prepared to tell Artemis when the Solarian had broken free. "You were dead!"

She laughed, as if it were a natural and every day event. "Yes, that does tend to happen and it wouldn't be the first time. I wonder if I'm stronger than I was as Sailor Mars?"

"Now is not the time, Rei!" Artemis growled. He felt guilty for allowing her to die, whether he could have stopped it or not. Deep down he knew there was nothing he could have done. "How are you now?"

"Well enough for you to fetch Serenity. I think I'll rest until your return."

Artemis nodded, leaving Rei with Koga. If she trusted him, then he would not question her. Koga said nothing, crossing his arms in stubborn defiance. So what if Artemis would have wiped the floor of him. It would take more than one battle to break his spirit. Strange, Tranquility had made friends with three of the deadliest enemies, ignoring the lines that had kept their races at war for several centuries. Selinity had been the same way with her marriage to the Solarian King, Tranquility and Serenity tied to both worlds.

Tranquility jerked awake, drenched in sweat. The room was silent, Sesshomaru asleep beside her. Everything seemed normal, but she knew it was only an illusion. Tranquility sensed the hatred and darkness, the laughter that filled her mind. She was cold, even with Sesshomaru pressed against her.

With no choice, she battled this presence alone. He taunted the young female, promising that she would be his path towards defeating Kagome and Sesshomaru. She was Kagome's weakest link to her mission and group of friends that followed the Miko.

No! I don't believe you!

You think Sesshomaru could protect you from me. He will die in the attempt and the result will be the same!

No! Leave me! Leave him alone! she screamed in defiance, clutching at her head.

I think not. If you don't believe my power, then here is a gift. He showed her the manipulation of a young boy, how he had murdered his entire village, nearly doing the same to his sister. There were several scars on her back.

Why? He was just a child.

It matters not their age, only that he was necessary for my ultimate desire. Kagome is preventing that goal and I will destroy her through you.

Never! Tranquility snarled in pure defiance. I'm not so easily captured, nor will I give you the chance to kill them.

Do not attempt to defy my power, young one. I've killed far more powerful demons than your Sesshomaru.

Harm him, and nothing will stand in my way to destroying you!

He quickly left, but his threat will always haunt her. To stay would be the death of the one person that had given her the love she had so longed for. It tore at her heart to leave Sesshomaru, knowing he'd be angry. Tranquility couldn't bare the thought of him dying, not for her.

Without even trying, he had given her everything she had ever wanted; his love and protection. Tranquility knew that he loved her, even if he never intended to tell her. He claimed that she belonged to him, and it made her feel warm and wanted.

Gently, unable to stop herself, she touched his face. Tranquility memorized every feature. He would have remained asleep, but her unease and fear awakened him immediately. "Why do you tremble? I smell your fear." Tranquility tried to hide her growing terror, but it was impossible.

Sesshomaru sat up, his eyes scanning the room. Seeing and feeling nothing he turned back to her. Her fear was very real and he had no doubt that something had happened. Why was she afraid? Was it of him? He quickly dismissed the idea. If she had not feared him last night, she would not now.

He remembered something, his entire focus on the Solarian. Yes, she was a fighter of Solaria, but she also possessed the abilities of her mother. She could sense the emotions and feelings of another person, a true telepath. Who would cause her such fear? He tried to read her mind, also gifted with her ability. She was shielding him from it, but he didn't have to see to know who could have visited her.

"Naraku..." He snarled. He saw her flinch, knowing he was right. Pulling her close, he stroked her hair. "Tell this Sesshomaru why you tremble? Naraku will not have what is mine, Solarian."

"Did you not say that I was also Lunarian, Sesshomaru?"

Sesshomaru had a strong feeling she blocked her painful past, only recalling the times without war and death. It didn't surprise him, her entire life was spent in one battle after another since the age of ten. Her father had visited Earth, Tranquility separated by a sudden attack.

Flash back

Sesshomaru was with his father, helping him with a threat on his borders. Koga's father had become a problem. She was everything and nothing he had imagined. At fifteen, she was a little hell fire, fighting his father's soldiers as they tried to capture and kill her wolf tribe.

She bore the mark of a Solarian, yet she had acted as a wolf. He had learned later that she had been raised and guarded by this wolf tribe, Koga like an older brother. This one child defended them, even against her own.

Any other child, human or demon, would have fled in terror. She refused, standing over Koga's fallen body. The younger demon carried her scars with pride and honor. Sesshomaru circled the girl, motioning for the other demons to hold back. What remained of her wolf tribe did the same, waiting for the outcome of their battle.

Sesshomaru was over four thousand years old, and he had never lost a battle. This girl intrigued him, and he craved the battle with her. Her eyes a beautiful lavender, accepted his challenge. His father stood back, shaking his head in wonder. His son seldom showed interest in those they captured or killed; this girl was an exception.

Why was a Solarian with the wolf tribes? She attacked, throwing Sesshomaru to the ground. He flipped them over, but she managed to escape his grip before he pinned her. She swiped at him with her nails, missing him by inches. Even as a child, she was nothing to be taken lightly.

Sesshomaru found himself enjoying their little fight, knowing he could easily take her. She showed no fear and Sesshomaru found her to be everything he had heard of the Solarian race. They were vicious. What could this little feline do if she were fully trained, especially after she had come of age and made her first transformation?

He snatched her long hair, rolling on top of her as she came around to rake her nails across his chest. Sesshomaru growled, latching on to her shoulder and holding her down. The Solarian snarled and howled in fury. Sesshomaru was relentless, never breaking his hold.

For two hours she struggled to get free, but even the little feline couldn't keep fighting forever. Koga, by the time Sesshomaru had managed to subdue the girl, was trying to get up. Their eyes met, and at that moment Sesshomaru chose to spare their lives.

Koga considered her one of his own, as if she were actually his blood sister. They fiercely protected each other. He was at least a thousand, still young by demon standards. Koga had taught her everything to survive in his world. She released another growl, refusing to cry or beg for her life.

Too weak to continue the fight, Sesshomaru stood, lifting the female into his arms. By nature, the Solarian was already a warrior, but living with the wolf pack had made her more wild, feral and completely untamable. The days were never dull, Sesshomaru constantly battling against her stubborn refusal to submit.

His father admired her unbreakable spirit, but he truly believed she couldn't be tamed. Sesshomaru was the one that reached through the instinct to fight and kill. A year passed before they discovered that she was the princess of Solaria and Lunaria. Koga, permitted to live, was always by her side. Their favorite spot was the garden.

They longed to be set free. By the time her father came to retrieve her, she didn't recognize him, nor did she want to leave. She gave as violent a struggle as she had with Sesshomaru. In the end, it was Artemis and Koga that managed to calm the wild child.

He had tried to forget the sixteen year old, but it was impossible. No battle had as much meaning. It wasn't the same without battling the little hell child. When his father needed a connection between Solaria and the Western Realms, Sesshomaru took the chance.

Tranquility was nothing like he remembered. Granted, she could still fight, but she was quieter. Koga had become a guardian to the princess, still by her side. They did everything together, but even he couldn't understand the true loneliness that she was starting to feel.

Everything changed after the generals of the negaverse kidnapped her. Sesshomaru, by chance, had been walking by her chambers when he heard the snarl of pain. He broke down the door, but they sedated him, throwing him beside Tranquility's unconscious form. Listening to pieces of conversation, he knew they were going to kill them.

He wasted no time when the enemy landed, escaping with Tranquility in his arms. Trapped in the dark tunnels of the negaverse, the next several months tested both their strength and minds, forcing them to fight back-to-back. At times, they were greatly outnumbered, but Tranquility never gave up.

She still lacked the strength she would have if she were a few hundred years older, but Tranquility had the courage and heart to make up for it. It was in this dark place that she transformed, Sesshomaru her only companion to ease her through the fear and pain.

End Flash back

Sesshomaru cleared his mind of the memories. Staring up at him, he could still see the same girl trying to protect him. Demons feared Sesshomaru and Koga for a reason; they were ancients. Artemis was another. Gently, he nuzzled her neck, wanting and needing her to trust in his strength.

She sighed in frustration, but Sesshomaru didn't know how to explain that he would come to no harm. He had no need of her protection. "Sesshomaru..."

"Tranquility, you cannot protect myself. My enemies are far too powerful and you will only be placing yourself in unnecessary danger. What does Naraku want?"

"It's only a dream," she whispered.

Sesshomaru knew she was lying and bit down on her neck, his teeth sharp and painful. "Dammit, Sesshomaru! Stop biting me!" Tranquility snapped, gasping as his teeth sank deeper. Her mind exploded in a wave of heat and pleasure.

Again he had made his mark, his youkai becoming more and more aggressive. It roared to be released, but Sesshomaru dared not. She was still young. 'SOUL MATE!' It snarled. The youkai lord trembled, fighting not to take her. It would be so simple, but her happiness would always come first. He had proved it in the darkness of the negaverse and he would do it now. Soon... Her change was so close, and he could afford to be patient.

Tranquility squirmed, wanting to get away, but needing to move closer. He was angry with her, but it was necessary. As a result of his friendship, she would die for him. The voice had promised death, and she believed it. Her eyes flashed, her nails growing longer before she calmed and relaxed.

Sesshomaru had good reason to question her. He knew her from a life she couldn't remember. Would she be able to leave?

Sango stared at the monk in horror. No, he wouldn't! Miroku looked really angry, nothing like the gentle man she knew him as. Little did she know, he had a violent side, something his enemies or other males would often see. Sango backed away, prepared to run. Miroku dodged her next blow, kicking her feet out from under her.

He's fast, she thought, already back on her feet.

"Sango, I grow tired of this!"

The others had gone in search of fire wood and food. Sango backed against a tree. "Miroku, I'm sorry. I thought..."

"That's just the point! I wasn't trying anything! You thought the same thing with Serenity! I haven't tried anything in the past six months!" He placed a hand on both sides of her head. He was really angry.

"You were injured in that fight and I was simply trying to keep the infection down! I'm tired of being slapped by you!"

Miroku stormed away, having nothing left to say. Grabbing his staff, he barely responded to Kagome and Serenity as they re-entered the camp. Sango sank to the ground, looking at the white bandages on her arm. It had been infected, and thanks to Miroku it no longer hurt.

The way he had looked at her, she had naturally assumed that he was about to take advantage of her. His words had stung. She hadn't realized, but it had been a long while since he had tried to touch her in a sexual manner. Miroku to her knowledge, hadn't touched any other female either, nor had he tried to ask them to bare his future child.

She had to find him. Forgetting her weapon, she ran after him, but he was already out of sight. How did she find him? She searched every where, still having no luck. It began to rain, forcing her to seek shelter in the camp. "Miroku!" she shouted.

A week passed before Tranquility found her chance. Sesshomaru had left her alone in the baths, giving her the opportunity to climb out the window. She had to move quickly, knowing he could easily track her. How do I hide my scent from him?

Tranquility took an old path, heading for the woods. She remembered the creek they had played in not too long ago, knowing it was her only chance. Not only did she have to hide from Sesshomaru, but Koga and Artemis would attempt to track her down as well.

Not for the first time, she thanked all her years of martial arts training and track. It gave her the strength to keep running, even when she wanted to stop and take a breath. She still wasn't far enough. Sesshomaru could travel several miles in a matter of seconds.

She had to do this. Sesshomaru would not give her a second chance at this. Tranquility ignored the pain she knew this running would cause him, but Naraku had visited her every night, always with the same promise. If Sesshomaru hadn't been a dream, then neither was Naraku. He would keep his promise. Tranquility whimpered. She didn't want to do this alone. Why was she always the one to sacrifice her dreams and the ones she loved?

Thirty minutes later, she stumbled across the stream, her breath coming in gasps. That's when she heard him, Tranquility already heading up stream. As she continued, the water became wider and deeper, giving her the chance to move under water.

The creek soon became a river, but she battled it for hours, hiding in dark shadows and spots as she grew tired. The mark on her shoulder burned, as if angered by her betrayal. Sesshomaru, she cried, reaching out to him for but a moment.

I can't do this! She screamed in despair. Why does everyone I care about have to be taken from me? I can't even have Kagome and Rei! She wiped away the tears, shivering as the sky opened up and rained on her already numb body. You're the first to ever love me.

Tranquility! Sesshomaru roared in fury. He would never stop hunting her, and for both their sakes she had no choice but to continue. She wouldn't allow Naraku to have his way. Closing off her mind completely, Tranquility chose to hide from all of them, including Naraku.

I will find you!

She had never been so alone, but the sacrifice would be worth it if she could keep them alive. Sesshomaru, I'm so sorry.

Sesshomaru snarled, trying to track her scent. How could one female manage to be so much trouble? He should have known she would try to run given the chance. Tranquility was blocking him, and for a week he searched. Tired and angry, it was then that he felt her mental cry of anguish and confusion.

The Western Lord knew she was not running from him, but the fate Naraku had promised. Damn him! He felt her heart wrenching pain, her soul empty and slowly dying. Dammit Tranquility! I don't need nor want your protection! She refused to respond, moving further out of his reach.

"I'll never quit! Naraku will not have you!"

Knowing he would never find her this way, Sesshomaru headed for the Eastern Lands. In minutes he was in Koga's camp, ignoring the wolves that surrounded him. They knew all too well that he could kill them in a single move. Koga entered the center, followed by Rei.

He blinked, surprised at the change in her. Koga instantly knew something was wrong, smelling Sesshomaru's anger. "Where is she?"

Shifting into his humanoid form, he met the Eastern Lord's gaze, his eyes still a deep red. The other wolves growled, fearing this demon's rage. "She ran."

"What the hell is she thinking?" Koga snarled, his claws growing. "She's completely vulnerable, with no knowledge of her past or how to defend herself! That stupid, stupid girl!"

"You underestimate her strength," Rei said. "Tranquility may not have the full powers of a demon, but she knows when to choose her battles. She's our undefeated martial arts champion in Japan."

"Naraku has taken an interest in her, but Tranquility has refused to tell me his intentions."

"Does she not know how old we are? We're not pups needing her protection! I swear, she's still young enough to be disciplined as one though!"

"Tranquility would never listen," Rei sighed. "She spent her life protecting us, being the only friends she had. If she even knew half of what I've done, Tranquility would break every bone in my body and do it again after I recovered."

Rei closed her eyes, concentrating, but having the same luck that Sesshomaru was having. "Her mental barriers are incredible. Tranquility seeks to protect us all." Changing into the Phoenix, Rei flapped her wings and flew. Despite her superior vision, she could find no sign of her friend.

Keeping her connection, she continued. This Naraku searches for a common thread to us all. By his hand, she will suffer. Only if she goes through the change, will she have the mental strength to fight what he has planned.

"Why Tranquility?"

Naraku knows that none of us would kill her. That is why she runs, to avoid killing us as a demon slayer's brother has done.

She wouldn't! Koga denied.

Does he not have control of another, a male demon slayer?

Koga slammed his fist against a tree. "Damn him and damn Tranquility! We have to find her!"

"If Naraku manages to change Tranquility, he will win this war," Sesshomaru said. "We will separate."

Rei landed in front of them, her feathers already disappearing. "Artemis has already been notified and will join in the search."

"You can do that?" Koga asked, shocked by her psychic abilities.

"Hai. Serenity is with him along with several others of Kagome's group."

As much as he hated to admit he, InuYasha and his mortal friends were needed. Could Tranquility avoid so many? "I want her, but she is not to be harmed if at all possible."

Koga snorted. "Tranquility never gives up without a fight. You know this better than any of us."

Sesshomaru traveled west, continuing to follow the creak down stream. Koga, Rei and his wolf tribe searched the East. Artemis went south with Serenity, while InuYasha and Kagome went North. The clock was ticking and none of them could afford to lose.

Serenity couldn't express the joy she felt when Artemis returned. The feline had barely paused for a breath when she threw her arms around his neck, surprised but not displeased.

Sango had just returned to the camp, drenched and sad. Suddenly Artemis roared in surprise, his body tight and ready to spring. His gaze had glazed over, his claws digging into the soft dirt. "No!" He hissed, the fur on the back of his neck rising. "Damn her! She's the most... That girl never changes!"

"Artemis?" Serenity asked, touching his trembling shoulder.

"She ran off!" Kagome paled, Artemis sensing Serenity's sorrow. She had wanted to meet her older sister, but again Tran was being stolen from them all. Would destiny never leave them be?

"Why?" InuYasha demanded. How could everyone be so tied to one person? It left them vulnerable and weak to an attack if something were to happen to her. He hated the feeling, his body already moving protectively near Kagome.

He already knew that none in their group, with the exception of Sango, would kill her. Artemis confirmed his hunch. "Naraku wants to use her against us." Sango felt as if the invisible knife in her heart had twisted even deeper. She knew all too well what Naraku was capable of, already faced with the horror of having to kill her own brother.

She didn't even know if she could in the end. "She chose to avoid that fate and left."

"What interest would Naraku possibly have in her?" InuYasha knew Naraku. It was unusual for him to show an interest in a demon, especially one that was still a mere kitten.

InuYasha was almost three hundred, and he still didn't have the strength to take on his brother. "Tranquility is Solarian, with more power than all of us and the Silver Crystal combined. If he manages to find her first, especially before the change, none of us will be able to kill her even if we wanted to."

"One girl can't be that powerful!" The group chose to separate, leaving a message with Kaede's village. Shippo was told to stay with them, not wanting the young fox demon to get hurt.

Miroku had no idea how long he had been walking. "I don't need her!" He took to the river, finding himself miles downstream before he found shelter from the storm. He shrugged his shoulders, deciding that it was time for a much needed vacation. Miroku touched his face, still feeling the sting of her hand. "Damn it! I'm tired of waiting! I'll defeat Naraku on my own!"

For several days and nights, he continued on his journey. Still following the stream, he ate when he was hungry and drank when he was thirsty. For the first time in months, he was truly free to enjoy himself and relax. Sango had tried to apologize, but Miroku had been to angry to listen. Miroku knew he would return eventually, but not until she made the first move. He had really wanted her to like him.

Miroku almost stepped on her, seeing her at the last moment. The girl was asleep, half in the water and half on a watery log. She was soaked and her skin was a shade of blue. Unaware that all of his companions searched for this girl, he lifted the thin woman in his arms and carried her to a cave he had seen a mile upstream.

Her clothes were tattered and her hair a tangled mess. She shivered and in minutes he had a warm fire going. Pulling a cloak from his small sack that he carried, he wrapped it around her shoulders. He thought about undressing her, but decided against the idea. Miroku snorted, not that Sango would have believed him if he told her.

"You shouldn't stay," she stuttered, stirring awake as the warmth crept into her numb fingers and toes. There were cuts and bruises everywhere, and she didn't have the strength to sit up. "Please, you should go. I don't want you hurt."

He couldn't help but laugh. It had been forever since anyone had concerned themselves about his health first. "Child, I've escaped death so many times, that I'm surprised that I'm still sane."

"I'm not a child and death is not a laughing matter!" She snapped.

"Perhaps, but when you've lived with a curse your entire life, death tends to get that way."

"A curse?"

Miroku stared at the hand that had caused him so much trouble. Granted, it had saved the lives of his friends, but each time it threatened to take him as well. "I could show you, but you won't be sitting there for very long if I did."

Moving closer, he placed another log onto the fire, watching the color slowly come back into her cheeks. "A few generations ago, a demon placed a curse on my family. The male, if he finds a woman to bare his child, will be able to pass it on without the fear of it killing him."

"It is my turn to carry the wind tunnel, and I have yet to find a woman that is willing to live with me. It has the power to suck in my enemies into the palm of my hand and soon I will be as well."

They could hear the steady drops of another rainstorm, further hiding her trail from Sesshomaru and the others. Miroku couldn't help but stare at the tiny red flames, losing himself in the moments of his childhood. Unprepared for the hand that touched his shoulder, he jumped. There was a softness in her expression, making him want to tell her anything and everything.

"Will you show me?" She whispered gently.

"NO! I can't! Don't you understand! It'll kill you!"

Tranquility smiled, already reaching for his covered hand. "Aim for the river, monk. I promise not to get in its path."

"You're crazy!"

Her request was insane, but he felt compelled to help him. He had looked so sad and no one should be so accepting of death, not when the person would choose life instead. "Please. Do I ask for so much?"

Miroku couldn't believe that he was allowing her to remove the cloth on his hand, setting aside the silver beads. Moving to his side, she slowly pointed it towards the river, uncurling each finger one-by-one. Even with his traveling companions, he never showed off his wind tunnel unless it was needed. "I..."

He tried to stop her, tugging on his hand, but she had already curled her fingers with his, giving him no choice but to release the wind tunnel. His eyes widened in terror. "Stop! Dammit, I don't want you..."

"You must trust me," she whispered, still not herself. Tranquility was driven by a powerful instinct. "I can help you." Her voice and eyes drew him in like a moth to the flame. No longer able to resist, he allowed the tunnel to be released, watching it pull in the river. It started to reach for her as well, but not before the cave and sky was bathed in a golden and red light.

Was he seeing a red star and gold, crescent moon? Soon the light was joined by a silver one, surrounding their bodies and entering his hand. He couldn't keep his eyes open, but when he opened them, he was shocked to still see her sitting next to him. Having used all her energy, she had fainted, her head on his shoulder.

Their hands were still intertwined, her auburn hair drenching his robe. Freeing his hand, he turned and stared at it in shock. It was a plain hand, no longer the threat it had been.

Tears slid down his face, Miroku too shocked or unable to laugh or smile. How could he when he had lived with his curse for so long, with no hope for a cure? Yet, here he was, sitting in a small cave with a miracle. For the rest of his life, he would never be able to repay her enough.

Taking her back to the fire, he gently pulled the cloak back around her shoulders, promising to somehow repay her gift. She wasn't human, but Miroku would never be afraid of this demon. He had been given a gift, with nothing asked in return. He didn't even know her name. Why had she been in the river? Was something chasing her? His eyes narrowed. Miroku would take on her enemies!

Miroku's Request

Chapter Five

She woke to a warm fire, still dazed from the day before. The surge of power had been unexpected, lying dormant for the next time she had need. What am I? I know Sesshomaru referred to me as a Lunarian or Solarian, but until now I never paid much attention. Am I really so different?

Tranquility was quiet for several minutes, staring at the roof of the cave. It would be so easy to lie here for the rest of her life, to forget the danger she was in. Was it so hard to ask for a normal life? She was always fighting, and she knew this to be true in her other life as well.

Hearing a sound, she turned her head, surprised to see the monk. He was wide awake, guarding the entrance of the cave in silence. She had trouble reading his expression, the man constantly looking at his hand. Tranquility gave a soft smile, happy that she had done some good. Is the monk protecting me? she wondered.

Tranquility was so tired of running, Sesshomaru constantly calling. She wanted to give in, to let him be the one to fight Naraku. Sesshomaru had wanted her trust, but it was much more than that. Tranquility would trust him with her life. It was the thought of him dying for her that scared her senseless. Nothing mattered as long as she managed to keep him safe.

The Monk glanced at her, a smile on his face. Seeing her awake, he abandoned his post, moving to her side and checking her bandages. She had stopped bleeding, but Miroku still thought her too thin. "I'll be right back," he promised.

Grabbing a few items from his pack, he disappeared returning an hour later with several fish, some berries and a dead rabbit. Tranquility gaped at the monk, as if seeing a man hunt was completely foreign to her. It didn't take long for her stomach to growl in protest, the smell of his food very appealing.

Miroku laughed. If it's one thing he had learned in the past two years, none of his companions had ever been able to resist or turn away his cooking; that included the stubborn InuYasha. Granted, Kagome's food from the future was good, but it lacked the taste that a person can get if it were freshly made.

"You should eat more," he teased, giving her the first helping. Between the two of them, they easily finished off the ten fish, the rabbit and the loaf of bread he still had in his sack. She still looked slightly hungry, but at least she could move with more energy now.

Despite his smile and laughter, Tranquility could still see that shadowed look in his eyes. She was all too familiar with that kind of pain. "You should rest, monk."

"Call me Miroku," he insisted, taking a cold cloth to wipe away the dried blood on her arms. "One of us needs to keep watch, and I doubt seriously you're up for the task yet. Compared to the gift you granted, losing one night of sleep is minor." Miroku was tired, but glancing at her pale features, he knew that she had been on the verge of collapse and exhaustion for several days.

"I think you're the one who needs to rest," he gently scolded, treating her as if she were a child. She scowled, reminding him of Kagome. "You're going to try and resist my help, aren't you?" Tranquility looked slightly guilty, making Miroku laugh all the harder. "I better warn you now, it's useless. Once I've set my mind to something, nothing will change it."

Tranquility had to leave, before this kind man was killed. He meant well, but Miroku was still human. Besides Sesshomaru, there was always Naraku. She hadn't felt his presence since she ran off, but that didn't mean he wasn't ready to strike at any moment. Her dreams had been horrifying. She could still see their lifeless eyes staring at her, her hands and face covered in their blood.

It was her fault! She had murdered them all and had laughed while she did it. Never! I won't let Naraku control me so easily!

Suddenly she felt strong arms wrap around her, holding her close as she trembled. Why was everyone so willing to protect her? This monk was clearly human, but he was like Kagome and Rei. He didn't call her a freak, and he was giving her a smile that offered friendship.

"I..."

"You're still very young," he told her. "Must you do this alone?" He wasn't serious! Tranquility jerked away, already bolting for the entrance. To her surprise, Miroku was already there, blocking her path. He seemed amused, but no less determined.

"Don't feel obligated for a gift that I freely gave!"

"Stop trying to send me away, it isn't going to work." Tranquility backed away, but he kept the same distance until she was trapped in a small corner. "I know what you're thinking, that it's best if you did this alone. It's not only insane, but stupidity."

Her lavender eyes flashed, but he refused to back off. To see his wide stance and his arms crossed, almost made her laugh. "You can't help me."

"Are you so certain? How will you know unless you're willing to believe in someone?"

"You can't fight a demon!" She snapped, hoping she'd frighten him off. His only response was a bitter laugh.

"Child, you have so much to learn. I've been fighting demons since I was able to walk. Humans either learn to survive in this world, or die."

"Stop referring to me as a child!"

"Then stop acting like one! I'm not going to even ask if you can fight. Instead, I'll make a small wager with you."

"What kind of wager?"

"You think that a human can't fight, at least not against a demon. Fine, if you're right then I'll let you go without a further argument. However, if I win, this discussion is over and we travel together."

Tranquility could only stare at the monk in shock. He wasn't seriously thinking of fighting her. Still, if it would send him away... "Why are you so determined about this?"

"Compared to what I was faced with, fighting your enemy is nothing. The wind tunnel was a gift from Naraku. Now that I'm free of the Wind Tunnel, then I no longer have a need to search for him."

"Then this should be easy for you. If avoiding Naraku is truly your intent, then staying with me will only get you that much closer. Miroku, please take the gift and leave. You deserve a happy and normal life."

"Naraku is your enemy, is it?" He found himself laughing around her a lot, but he couldn't help it. Tears streamed down his face, and he knew it was upsetting her, but the entire situation was hilarious. "I'm almost tempted to do as you ask, but my answer is still no."

Tranquility growled, "How can one human be so stubborn? I won't have you killed!"

"And I will not repay your gift by allowing the same fate for yourself! I gave you a choice, and it's your only way to rid yourself of me!" Miroku set aside his staff, knowing he didn't need it. "I respect your concern for my safety, however, you dishonor me by your request."

"Why won't you listen? My entire life has been alone and I've accepted that! You choose a path of death. There has never been anyone to protect me, nor do I expect them to. Please, I want you to live! My friends are so few, that if even one were to die, I could never forgive myself!"

Miroku refused to move, waiting for her to try and leave. He hated the lesson he was about to give, but it was the only way to get through to her. She was about to see a side that a few of his servants dared not to bring out. "I've already given you my say in the matter."

"I don't want, nor do I need your help! Just leave me alone!"

One step, and he already had Tranquility flat on her back. She didn't even see him move. His hand pressed painfully against her arms, the brown of his eyes cold and hard. "We will not continue this," he warned dangerously. "Insist on acting like a child and you will be treated as such. Perhaps you need to understand why I have no choice but to follow."

She could only stare and listen, too shocked that she had been beaten. Tranquility had been in some challenging fights, but Miroku was on a level that surpassed even the grand masters of the schools she visited. Should she be surprised? This was Feudal Japan. Where she came from, one learned martial arts as a hobby or even a sport. Here, it was a way of survival. It was kill or be killed.

"The gift you offered can never be free! I never even dared to hope that it could be cured. It was my fate and I had accepted it! If I die trying to keep you alive, then that is my choice, not yours!"

"Miroku..."

He grasped her chin with the hand she had healed, fire blazing in his eyes. Tranquility sighed, knowing he had won. It wasn't a thrilling thought. To be beaten so easily, gave her all the more reason to stay away from Sesshomaru and the others. "Naraku came to you in a dream, promising death to your friends."

"How...?"

"Naraku only gains control if you allow him to. Yes I was cursed, but I chose to find and fight him regardless. He has a young boy in his grasp, and at times he's able to break free of it. Narkau has forced him to do unspeakable things, but we're still trying to save him."

"You say you're not a child, and perhaps on human terms you're right. However, according to the demon world, you're still too young to have full access to your powers. Your fate is determined by Naraku only if you allow it to happen."

"By avoiding your friends, you give that much more power to Naraku. If you're going to continue on this path, then stop being so stubborn and allow me to help. It's suicide to go alone!"

"Fine, but only if you teach me how to fight! I've never seen moves like yours, and I watched the masters."

Miroku snorted. "I'm not going to even ask."

"I was good growing up, but I was never officially taught."

"Aren't you a demon?"

Miroku continued to surprise her. She had always been different from her classmates, and had been hated for it. Yet here she was, pinned by the monk, and he respected her. She had so much to learn. "I'm not sure of anything anymore."

"How old are you?"

"Eighteen in two days."

"Are you going to behave now?" Tranquility nodded, knowing it was pointless to argue with Miroku any longer. Smiling, he stood and rested his weight against the cavern wall. Miroku appeared so relax, so different than moments before. "That would explain why Naraku is so determined to have you. You're a child until you hit maturity. Have you gone through the change yet?"

"You know about that?"

"I have a few friends that explained it to me. There's a human even raising a fox demon. I think he's almost ten now."

"That doesn't explain why Naraku would want me though."

"A fully mature demon would be nearly impossible for him to control, and until you've made the transformation, you're vulnerable and easy to manipulate. That's why he went after the demon slayer's brother. He couldn't fight Naraku's mind control at his age."

"Your power was nothing to sneeze at yesterday, and I have a feeling that's only a small portion of what you're capable of. Do you even remember?"

"A little."

"You're a danger to both sides." Miroku saw her withdrawing and immediately rested a hand upon her shoulder. "Tranquility, I'm only making you aware of the problems you're too stubborn to see. All we have to do is to teach you how to use and control this power. In the mean time, we hide for a few months, wait for your transformation and then decide if we confront your enemy with or without your other friends."

He made everything sound so simple, and she couldn't help but hope and believe in him. "How you can be so optimistic?" She asked.

"When you live with death all your life, it tends to put a new perspective on things. By the way, I never asked your name."

"Tranquility." Miroku almost regretted his decision to help her, but didn't have time to say anything before they heard the crushing of leaves outside the cave. Tranquility shrank back, somehow squirming into a crack. Miroku shook his head, already moving outside to meet the intruder.

The last person he expected to find was Sango, the demon slayer on Kirara's back. Miroku wasn't sure how to react, choosing to keep an indifferent expression. He wasn't going to give in without some resistance. What kind of idiot did she take him for?

"Sango," he greeted, his voice cool. She flinched, but Miroku refused to let her off so easily.

"Everyone was worried about you," she whispered, not looking up. Sango had landed for a reason, but had forgotten when she had spotted Miroku. Sliding off Kirara's back, she walked towards the angry Monk and clutched at his sleeve. She tried to read his expression, but it was cold and strangely blank. Sango had done this and it hurt her to know that they may never be friends again.

Miroku should have known she didn't come because she wanted him. "As you can see, I'm perfectly fine." He moved towards the water, washing his hands free of dirt and breakfast. "I'm not going back, so quit wasting your time."

Sango struggled against the tears threatening to fall. She never thought her heart would feel so painful, but listening to Miroku made her feel all the guiltier for the way she had acted. "Miroku, I never had a chance to say thank you. And, you were right. I was wrong to slap and you, and for that I apologize."

Miroku forgot to keep his mask, long enough for her to notice. Sango realized that he didn't want to get hurt again, placing an invisible barrier between them. He hadn't expected Sango to apologize; it was a first and he didn't know how to respond without seeming childish. "Sango..."

Sango suddenly threw her arms around his neck, crying into his robe. "Miroku, I'm so sorry. I knew you were different, but I was afraid and..."

Miroku smiled, returning her embrace. If she was willing to apologize, then he could certainly forgive her. "We'll talk about this later, Sango."

"You'll come back."

He sighed, burying his hands in her thick hair. It felt good to hold her, watching her reaction as he became more possessive. Miroku wanted this woman, more than she could possibly ever want him in return. "Things are not so simple any longer, Sango. Our paths will cross in time, but for now I need the others to stay away from me."

"Why?" she asked, searching for a possible threat. Miroku grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at him. His gaze was so intense, that she could only stare at him helplessly, a knowing smirk on his face. This time he wouldn't give her a chance to hit him, trapping her arms against her sides.

Sango blushed, his other hand still holding her chin captive. "Miroku..."

"I grant you a gift, a promise that I will return, Sango." He was far from gentle, taking her mouth with a desire that had been pent up for far too long. Sango whimpered, taken by surprise and helpless to stop him. She had never expected this, her entire body betraying her.

He tugged on her lower lip, his tongue demanding entry. They were lost in the moment, completely forgetting their missions. Reluctantly he pulled away, but Miroku was satisfied to know that Sango would forever be his. He could see it in her eyes as she weakly climbed on to Kirara. "Go, before I change my mind and continue what I started," he growled.

"You're not angry still, are you?"

Miroku smiled, the glow in his eyes brighter. She took a deep breath, feeling her stomach flip. His look was predatory and possessive. Miroku was making no effort to conceal what he wanted, and Sango suddenly knew he had felt this way for some time. Sango started to leave when she remembered something.

"Miroku, the others are searching for a girl."

"I know what they're after, and I won't help."

She blinked, wondering why he was so intent on not returning. He was standing protectively in front of the cave, as if he were telling her to back off. "You've seen her," Sango said. She couldn't hide the hint of jealousy, blushing when Miroku smiled.

"Do as I ask and keep the others away from me?" His expression was on the border line of hostile, a deadly promise if he was pushed to far. "Do you trust me, Sango?"

His anger was directed more towards her friends than herself, but she knew better than to continue pushing him. "Miroku..." He growled, snatching her around the waist and pulling her off the two tail.

"That's not an answer," he whispered, pushing her against a tree. "Will you do as I ask?" His breath teased her skin, moving to the hollow of her throat.

"Hai."

"Do you trust me?" He tugged on her ear, driving all thoughts from her mind.

"Yes..." she gasped.

"I won't repeat myself, Sango. Leave, or I'll take you on this grassy floor here and now; damn the consequences or if I'll be held responsible!"

Sango fled, knowing he would follow through with his promise. Was she running from him, or herself? She was terrified of the commitment he wanted from her, but the few days apart had been tearing her apart.

I'll do as you ask, Miroku. I just hope you know what you're getting into.

She was so far into the crack, he almost thought she had found a way out the other side. Miroku laughed, "She's gone. You can come out now."

"I knew this was a mistake. If I stay..." Miroku snatched her wrist and slammed her against the wall. He didn't hurt her, but it was enough to gain her attention.

"Tranquility, we've had this discussion. As it stands, you no longer have a choice but to stay in my company. You're running from the best trackers known to humans and demons alike! I don't even think hiding from them is possible! However, unless you know these lands, you might as well give up now!"

"Miroku, I don't want..."

"What you want is irrelevant. Sango has promised to keep them away. If you leave now, your friends will find you. To be honest, I think they should."

Tranquility growled, but Miroku refused to be intimidated. "Get read to leave. Koga's wolf pack patrols these waters frequently. I'm amazed you made it this far without being spotted."

Waiting for him to pack his things, Tranquility anxiously watched the sky, terrified of being discovered. "We should leave the river."

"Why? It covers our scent."

"Tranquility, if Sesshomaru is the one tracking you, then that will only delay him. Who else are you hiding from?"

Tranquility suddenly felt like a little kid, having to tell her father why she had been sent home early from school. "Koga and Artemis," she whispered.

"I know what Koga is capable of. Who is Artemis?"

"He's a Solarian." Miroku paled, almost dropping his staff. "What's wrong?"

"I think I'd rather face Naraku. Have you lost your mind, Tranquility? Solarians rarely lose a fight and they always catch what they hunt."

Tranquility felt discouraged, but Miroku was already heading out, waiting for her to join him. "You're still going to help?"

"I haven't a clue why, but yes. I'm not sure if I should pity or respect this foolish quest of yours; however, a promise is a promise. You're trying to protect them, aren't you?" He took her silence as a yes and sighed. "Tranquility, hasn't it occurred to you that they don't need it. I'm surprised that they're even getting along."

"Why?"

As they walked, Miroku told her of the wars between the wolves, dogs and Solarians. The wars had been fierce and deadly, all sides taking heavy losses. "All the more reason to keep you away from Naraku," Miroku finished.

"I don't want to kill them!" She cried.

"Not telling them will be just as harmful. Tran, while we're traveling, consider the mental pain you cause your friends. I should know; I did the same when I discovered my curse."

"That's why I said you can go."

Miroku sighed, as if he were speaking to a child; "Tranquility, my family is gone, destroyed by Naraku. I'm the last of my line and as long as Naraku still lives, I'll never truly be free of him."

"Where will we go?" Tranquility asked. His smile made her laugh; "I forgot, you're a monk."

"We'll take the river to the next village. From there we'll catch a ride on a hay wagon until we reach the northern mountains. If we're careful, we can use the snow to hide our tracks and scent." After washing up, Tranquility was finally ready to leave, following close behind Miroku. He appeared so calm and confident that she lost any doubt about his joining her.

"I can't believe this!" Artemis growled, letting Serenity rest. They had been traveling for several months, finding no sign of the runaway.

"Do you think she has her memories back?"

"If she did, Tranquility would know it's stupid to run and hide like this! She can't recall any of the battles we fought, therefore doesn't think we're strong enough to stop a simple half-demon."

"You can't blame her, Artemis. It's not like I haven't done something just as stupid. Remember the dark moon?"

"Don't remind me. It's one of the few times that I ever agreed with your boyfriend on anything."

"I did make him angry, didn't I?"

"You could have been killed."

"My life was no more important than my friends."

"You're as bad as Tranquility. If you ever pull a stunt like that again..." Artemis took a chunk out of an old oak, releasing some of his anger. "Dammit, why can't we find her!"

"Are you sure that none of us haven't?"

Since coming to Feudal Japan, her telepathic abilities had increased tremendously. Green eyes stared at the Lunarian, waiting for her to explain her question. She didn't seem to know how to continue. With a sigh, he slowly relaxed, allowing Serenity to rest against his side.

She was starting to depend on the large feline more and more, and Artemis preferred it this way. Strangely, she could no longer become Sailor Moon, nor did he want her to. "I think Sango has an idea of where she's at."

"Sango doesn't lie, Serenity. If she had seen Tranquility, she would have said something."

"I never said she saw her, only that she may know of her location. Haven't you noticed how quiet she is?"

"I thought it was because of the Monk."

"Sango said he refused to return to the group. At first I thought it was because of the fight they had, but now I'm not so sure. She seems so sad, and worried. Sango avoids conversations with Kagome, and spends hours in the sky with Kirara."

"Where is she now?"

"With InuYasha and Kagome."

"Aren't they patrolling the Northern Sector?"

"Hai."

"I wish I knew what's she so afraid of? According to Rei and Kagome, Tranquility has never run from a fight in her life."

"I don't think she's running because she's afraid. She runs because Naraku has promised to use her against her friends and the one person she loves."

"You can feel her?"

"Only for brief moments and only when I'm asleep. She's very sad, but I think someone knocked some sense into her."

"Who?" he growled.

Serenity laughed, stroking his golden stripes. "I don't know his name, only that he doesn't agree with her sense of protecting everyone."

She was hiding something from him, her eyes glowing with mischief. Artemis growled, starting to reach for her with his paws. "Lunarian, you may not know his name, but you have an idea."

"You worry too much, Artemis. At least she's safe, and still recovering from another sparring match."

"And?"

"I can't hide anything from you," she pouted.

"You're not supposed to!" He snapped.

"He's human."

"Serenity..." His patience was growing thin, and he was prepared to torture it out of her. "Wait, you're telling me a human can beat her!"

"He's actually very good and she has yet to win." She finally gave in, knowing that they needed to find her. Serenity could be wrong, but two and two always added up to be four. "I think it's the Monk, Miroku."

Artemis snarled, already wanting to tear the human to shreds. "Doesn't he take advantage of girls?"

"Miroku is harmless. I actually talked to him once."

"And you're telling me now!"

"He didn't say where he was, only that Tranquility was safe. I've never met anyone that can resist my abilities like he can. Miroku doesn't like her decision to avoid Sesshomaru or the others; however, he knows that she'll only run again if he tried to take her back. By staying with her, Miroku feels that he can keep her safe until you do find her."

"How does Sango fit into this?"

"She said she found him on one of her patrols. If he told her to keep us away from him, Sango wouldn't ask any questions. Miroku, I don't think, told Sango about Tran."

"I can't believe I'm actually respecting a human. He's clever and very devious. By having Sango keep the others away from him, he's managed to sneak Tran beneath our very noses. The others won't search for him, thinking that he needs time away from Sango."

"Sesshomaru hasn't found her in the west, Koga just cleared the east and we're almost done with the south. Artemis, I think she's in the northern mountains. It's the only part we haven't searched."

Artemis couldn't believe Tranquility had managed to trick everyone. They had all assumed she was traveling alone, Serenity's dream changing everything. If she had remained alone, Tranquility would have more than likely stuck to the river. Koga had managed to find the cave she had rested in, not recognizing the other scent.

Being a monk, Miroku knew the land better than a lot of the demons. Not only could he hide, but he knew how to defend himself against the demons, having fought with them for several years. He was almost as affective as the demon slayer. "Get Rei and tell her to head for the Northern Mountains with Koga. I'll let her be the one to tell Sesshomaru and the others."

Artemis nuzzled the Lunarians neck, content to rest a while longer. "I hope there isn't a village near by when she does tell him."

"He won't hurt her, will he?" Artemis purred, calming her.

"I doubt it, but don't think he won't make her regret running away either. Has she made the transformation yet?"

"I don't think so, but it's been awhile since she's spoken to me. It was through Miroku last night that I managed to put things together."

"Why now?"

"He's worried. There's been an increase in demons searching for her, and they're not exactly friendly. Instead of engaging with them, he's kept a low profile. Miroku thinks that if he kills any of them, Naraku will know where they're at."

"So we owe the Monk for keeping her out of trouble?"

"Basically."

"These humans surprise me."

"Artemis, you can't judge the entire race because of a minor few. She loves the humans, and by hating them, you hate what Tranquility is. It's a human that risks everything to keep her alive." She turned her face up to look at him, to make him fully realize what the humans have done. "It's the humans that help Kagome fight Naraku. No, they're not perfect, but considering their short life spans, we can't expect them to be."

He started to rise, but Serenity gently held him down, curling closer against his soft fur. Artemis was so warm and she needed to sleep. "We've been searching for several days now and we can use the rest. Artemis, we're all worried about her, but she's not going to come back without a fight."

"You've grown up, Serenity."

"I've certainly waited long enough," she giggled. There was so much more that Serenity wanted to say, but felt insecure about her feelings. He probably thinks of me as a child anyway.

Artemis could sense her discomfort, but chose to give her the time she needed to sort out her thoughts. She was seventeen. Have they really been searching for half a year? Tranquility was almost nineteen and this worried him. Why can't she transform and did it have to do with the block on her memories?

Rei nearly fell out of the sky when she heard the news from Serenity. I'm not telling Sesshomaru! She protested.

Serenity laughed, reminding her that she was the only one that wouldn't get killed. Gliding towards the surface, she landed on a rock, waiting for Koga to catch up and shift. "How angry can Sesshomaru get?" she asked.

"The fight between Artemis and I, consider that child's play." Rei was having second thoughts about telling the Western Lord what she had just learned. "What's wrong? Tranquility isn't hurt is she?"

"No, but..." Rei changed, stretching her long legs and muscles. It had been several days since she had been able to do this, spending hours in the sky. Koga couldn't help but stare, her actions strangely arousing.

"Why do I have the feeling I'm not going to like this anymore than Sesshomaru would?"

"Well, it appears that we all underestimated Tranquility. All of us assumed she would do this alone, but apparently that wasn't the case."

"I knew there was another scent that day!"

"Serenity managed to connect with the one helping her, but he didn't give away their location. He's extremely loyal to Tran, but he's worried enough to know they're in a lot of danger. Naraku will snatch her the moment they reveal themselves."

"He's that close to her?"

"Serenity didn't know. She only knows that the monk refuses to fight them. In doing so, he'll give away both their positions."

"A monk?" Rei almost chose to leave, watching Koga's eyes turn red. "What monk?"

"He didn't say, but Serenity has a strong feeling that it's Miroku. The Monk did refuse to rejoin their group and told Sango to leave him alone."

"Of all the... She is not with that perverted..." It took him nearly an hour to stop his ranting, several trees and bushes now splinters of wood. Rei had transformed, hovering in the sky until he stomped back to the clearing, demanding that she come down. She hesitated, not quite trusting his temper. Rei was definitely considering just leaving Sesshomaru in the dark.

"You're not afraid," he teased with a wolfish grin. "I'm not going to bite, at least not enough to kill you." Koga was still angry, but he seemed to have it under control as Rei did as he asked.

Even on the ground she hesitated, ready to fly at the slightest sign of his temper. His smile grew wider, impossible for her to resist. Rei may be an adult, but by demon standards, she was still very young and could easily be hurt or killed. Koga smelled her fear, but she didn't move as he came closer. "Have you told Sesshomaru?"

He was amused by the flapping of her wings, the only indication that she was more than terrified. "I haven't determined if it's in everyone's best interest yet."

"Let me give you some advise, Phoenix. Don't stay linked to him after you tell him. Miroku treads dangerous grounds with her."

"Why? Serenity said she was safe with him."

"From other demons yes, but from an impossible flirt no! Sesshomaru will kill him."

"You're not serious. Miroku, according to Serenity, treats Tran like a child." Rei again changed back into her humanoid form.

Koga laughed, amused at the idea. "She does act that way."

"Was he really that bad?"

Koga took a step closer, his breath inches from her throat. "Miroku was a little like this." He snatched her waist and pulled her against him. "He can't help himself." To make his point, Koga lowered his hands until they stopped at the edge of her skirt, his fingers brushing against her bare flesh. "A little higher and you have an idea of what he's like. Need I explain further," he growled.

Rei trembled, her face beet red. Did she slap him or pull away? Koga had gone very still, sniffing at her neck. She was intoxicating, the smell of the wind and fresh rain. "Koga?"

Koga leapt away, startled by his reaction. Suddenly he wanted to throttle Tranquility. If it hadn't been for her, he wouldn't have to be stuck with a woman he wanted to pin and take. He was a wolf, and Rei was everything he wanted in a female partner. Her scent was strong and very tempting.

"Rei, you have about five seconds to call Sesshomaru. Continue to hesitate, and I'll start to think you want a distraction." Rei blushed, having a difficult time concentrating. Koga didn't help matters as he came close again, brushing her thighs with his long tail. Why was he acting so strange all of a sudden?

Sesshomaru was in a volatile mood. Not only had he not found her, but he had a strong hunch that she had help. He knew she hadn't recalled the past, or this nonsense would have ended a long time ago. She stubbornly refused to speak with him, and her scent had grown cold after the first day.

The mere thought that someone was helping her made his blood boil. It better not be a male! Tranquility starved for affection, and it would be easy to take advantage of her.

Sesshomaru... He froze. Only two people had the courage to contact him this way, and he knew better than to think it was Tranquility. Despite her lack of communication, he was still aware of her pain. She wanted to answer his call, almost doing so on several occasions. The nightmares held her back, giving her the iron will to resist him. Her determination shocked him.

The next time he allowed her a bath, he would personally take on the responsibility himself. Sesshomaru was accustomed to his command never being questioned, and her lack of trust infuriated the Western Lord.

Rei waited patiently for him to calm, very close to leaving him alone. Sesshomaru felt the fear radiating around her, quickly cutting off all emotions. It did the trick, Rei immediately calming enough to deliver her message. Serenity said to concentrate our efforts on the Northern Mountains.

Why? InuYasha may be an idiot, but he's more than capable of tracking someone.

Not if the person helping her is familiar with InuYasha and how he hunts.

What human would dare hide Tranquility against several demons? Rei knew he would figure it out, and prepared herself for the explosion. With an iron will he forced himself to stay calm, but it was by a thread. Continue.

Tranquility doesn't know these lands, not unless she had her full memories. We all know that isn't true. There's no way she could have found all the passage ways into the mountains unless she found someone to guide her through them. How many people do you know that have that knowledge and can fully protect himself against a demon if need be?

Sesshomaru slowly added the clues together, the control on his anger slipping with each one. It was a fact that she had left the river shortly before Koga found her hiding spot in a cave. It was a fact he had picked up another scent, but dismissed it as more than one occupant at separate times. Miroku was missing and had refused to rejoin Kagome or the others.

Miroku hated Naraku more than anyone, but had made it quite clear he wanted all his friends to stay away from him. If that monk... Sesshomaru was all too aware what the human monk was like, and how many times he had seen a red mark on his face from either the demon slayer or the Miko. Tell me, he growled dangerously.

She hesitated, but Sesshomaru was not known for his patience or forgiving nature if she withheld the information now. Miroku.

All Sesshomaru could see was red, Rei already out of his mind when he roared. The very heavens seemed to split apart, the earth trembling as he raced towards the Northern Mountains at a pace that left burnt marks for miles. He knew that monk and Tranquility would easily forgive him. Miroku knew the region and could definitely hide her from a large group of demons.

If he's laid one hand on her... His mind was a cloud of hate and rage, his heart twisted in jealousy. Tranquility was his and the mere thought of the human monk was enough to send him into a frenzy. All Sesshomaru could feel was the need to kill, to tear a certain monk to shreds.

Rei couldn't believe how dangerous Sesshomaru was. "Koga?" she trembled. "We better find Miroku and Tran before Sesshomaru does."

"Why?" he growled. Rei glared at him, but he wasn't about to take it back. "I dislike the human as much as Sesshomaru. What makes you so sure I won't kill him?"

"He hasn't harmed her," she protested.

"Define your definition of harm! She's a woman and that's all Miroku needs!"

She brushed his face with the tips of her fingers, her touch strangely a comfort. "You're very protective of her, aren't you?"

"We all are," he answered, already changing into his wolf form. "Let's go," he growled.

Rei sighed. Would the three demon's ever forget the guilt? Her death was not their fault, but it was impossible to convince them, especially Sesshomaru. Koga, we'll get her back.

Before or after Naraku does. Damn that monk. He may not be enough to help her.

We'll get her back! Rei shouted in defiance. Koga would have smiled if he could, racing against the wind. She was fast, making it difficult to keep up. I'll never give up on my best friend. His teeth were pulled back, and if she could have seen him, Rei would have known he was laughing at her.

Life's Lessons

Chapter Six

Miroku scowled, peeling the squirming fish from his robes. "Do you mind? It takes ten hours to wash and dry these things!"

Fishing in a frozen lake, Miroku had finally managed to find a spot where they can rest and hide from the demons at the same time. It had been a dangerous journey, Naraku sending more and more of his minions to find Tranquility. He was starting to wonder if Sesshomaru and the others could have kept her safe?

Naraku was holding nothing back at obtaining the gentle female, Tran reminding him of a curious kitten. She certainly got into enough trouble like one. They were surrounded on all sides by white peaks and trees. Even if InuYasha and the others figured out that he was in the northern mountains, he seriously doubted they could track him in places long forgotten.

There was plenty of coverage and more than enough time to teach her the lessons she needed to survive. Miroku smiled, having enjoyed the past six months. Her bruises were less on her arms and legs, and the black eyes had nearly vanished entirely.

He was impressed with her fighting skills, already teaching her the advance skills of his order. She could block most of his attacks and was constantly adding techniques of her own. If it hadn't been for his experience with other demons, Miroku was positive she would have defeated him by now.

Miroku prayed that everything he taught this girl would be enough. She was damn good and it frightened him to think that Naraku would succeed and turn her into something unrecognizable and lethal. She would tell him of the future she had come from, describing scenes that made no sense to him. What was a car?

He would ask her about her fighting style, but Tranquility honestly didn't seem to know. She had watched several master fighters and tried to copy their style, but they were too precise and too accurate for her to simply have picked up. They felt familiar, was all she would say.

The first few weeks had been difficult on them both. Tranquility screamed in fear of Naraku's future and Miroku would find himself trying to calm her for the rest of the night. Yet there was something more, a hint of a darker past that she never remembered upon waking.

These were the moments when he saw her cry, and he wanted nothing more than to drive all her demons away. She was such an innocent, that not even the old Miroku would have considered taking advantage of her. She trusted him with a childlike innocence and was always watching everything he did. Tranquility was an usual demon.

Unlike InuYasha, Sesshomaru, and Koga, she trusted him completely. There was no half way with her. Miroku found himself growing attached to her, seeing her as the sister he never had. Tran laughed when he mentioned it to her, replying that he acted like a protective older brother. She didn't seem to mind.

Miroku sighed. How many times had he pulled her out of danger? Tranquility would smile when he gave her a sharp warning about something, confused when he hid them from the demons that tracked them and excited when they hunted for their meals. She knew so little about the dangers of his world, Miroku often snatching her away from poisonous plants or snakes.

Definitely a cat, he muttered in silence. She was curious about everything, no matter how dangerous it was. She climbed trees, crawled into holes that were often too small, and fell into water holes that Miroku had to fish her out of. Occasionally he would catch a glimpse of Sango and Kirara in the sky, but they never came close. As promised, she had done as he asked, keeping the others away.

I wonder if she knows.

Another fish slapped his face, Tranquility throwing another before Miroku assaulted her with several snow balls. Squealing in protest, she ducked behind a tree, crouching low to the ground. Yep, most definitely a cat. He was curious to why she hadn't made her first transformation, and found that he was thankful for it.

Demons had a strange ability to track each other, probably because of the youkai that eventually revealed itself. They gave off powerful auras, and was like a beacon to those that a younger one didn't need attention from. How much did it have to do with her forgotten past? Miroku had caught hints of her other life, some of the events she screamed about in her sleep having no relationship to the events she had already spoken to him of.

He threw his staff, knocking the snow from the branches and watched it fall on her head. Tranquility struggled to pull free. Laughing, he walked over, helping her up. She couldn't believe how much fun she had when she was with Miroku. He could be serious when needed to be, but Miroku much preferred to be smiling or goofing off.

Life had been hard on Miroku, and from what she had seen, on most humans from the Feudal Era. Yet, here they were, running from every demon imaginable and he was still able to enjoy everything around him. She shook the snow off and followed him towards the fire, helping clean and prepare the fish. "You're getting better," he praised.

Tranquility's eyes became distant, but only for a moment before she was smiling again. "It had seemed so easy." Miroku was looking forward to the change. If he were able to bet, he would wager everything he owned that she was a feline. Her unique eyes missed nothing, and they would become narrow slits when she had spotted something to hunt.

Miroku had had a difficult time explaining to her why it was necessary to kill animals for food, but a few days of hunger quickly had her believing him. Her first kill had been a wild stag, her reward being several cuts. Tranquility didn't seem to care as she wiped the blood from her face and hands.

He taught her how to skin and cook the meat, to use the fur for clothing and to make jewelry out of the bones. There wasn't a part of an animal that he wasted, saying it was sinful to nature and to the gods. Tranquility in return taught him things that he had no clue as to where she picked up.

Ideas would suddenly pop into her head, ones such as changing their shoes for moccasins that left no footprints in the snow. It was her stunt after the second month that had freaked him out the most. Using the blood of her kills, she would often disguise their scent, adding to their evasion of her friends and Naraku.

A few more months, and Miroku doubted she would need his help for much of anything. She knew how to wait patiently in a tree, hide from even the most alert creature and how to kill without ever making a sound. It was always a sight to watch her in action.

Miroku didn't even want to think about what would happen once Sesshomaru or Koga caught up to them. He couldn't determine anything about Artemis yet, but preferred to remain on the safe side and keep running and hiding. He had been noticing a gradual change in her. Tran was happier, and she seemed to forget about her problems for several days before they were on the move again.

She was learning to have fun, and she never felt lonely any longer. Tran still missed Sesshomaru, but it was easier knowing that he was safe and that Miroku was helping her. If it hadn't been for the Monk, she never would have made it this far. Even he was starting to admit that Naraku was a major issue. He still believed that Sesshomaru and the others could prevent her horrible fate, but Miroku wasn't about to take a chance on it.

Their first month of travel was mostly in fields or on hay wagons. She learned the most during this time, always interacting with the people Miroku visited. The people loved her, surprised at her gentle nature and her affection for children.

Miroku had learned that babies were an issue. She loved them, but they always seemed to make her cry. Tran couldn't even say why, only that it hurt to hear their first moments of life. Reincarnation was not a new concept to Miroku and often their death in the previous life was a violent one.

Half way through the second month, they began to run into other demons, trying to avoid them without a fight. It had been nearly impossible and Naraku always seemed to be close on their heels. He seemed to want Tranquility as badly as he wanted the jewel shards and the idea terrified Miroku. Fox Demons responded to her easily, and Miroku couldn't possibly see the power that Naraku was so desperate to have.

She was too gentle natured. Could she really become so powerful that Tran would slaughter all of her friends? Tran seemed to believe it and became all the more determined to stay away from them. It had taken her time to accept Miroku, but he never once let his guard down.

Miroku remembered seeing the affects of Naraku in Sango's younger brother, and it was terrifying. According to Sango, he had been a gentle person, still in the training stages of becoming a demon slayer. That had all changed the minute Naraku took control, turning Kohaku into a lethal killing machine.

He didn't care how long it took, but until Tran fully remembered her past or made her transformation, he would never leave her to fight this battle alone. Miroku doubted that she would want to anymore. Tranquility was totally reliant on him, accepting the fact that she was not as strong in the Feudal Era as she was in hers.

Tranquility was becoming an exceptional cook, and they often took turns switching out and competing to be the best. After they had finished off their meal and cleaned up around the fire, they rested, hidden by a small cave that opened up further back. The cave connected to several other tunnels, some leading to hot springs and lava pits.

She loved to explore, and would be gone for several days before she returned to the surface. Miroku had learned not to worry, discovering that she had perfect vision in the dark and never got lost. It would prove to be useful if they should ever need to flee in a hurry.

It was at those times she was always the saddest. She had recently returned from one of her wanderings and Miroku had spent all afternoon trying to cheer her up. "You miss them." It was a statement and she didn't even bother trying to hide her feelings anymore.

"I can feel him," she whispered. "Sesshomaru has been close for several days. That's why you haven't seen me. I couldn't afford to have him find us."

"And the others?"

"If Sesshomaru is here, then it's safe to assume that the others are as well."

"Perhaps it was time we moved on anyway," he sighed.

"Miroku?" The monk looked frightened, but he was too much of a friend to say anything. His face had taken on a shade of green. "What's wrong?"

"I think now is a good time to tell you why I'm just as eager to stay away from Sesshomaru and the others as you are. If they catch me with you... Naraku will be the least of my problems."

Tranquility released a fierce growl, her eyes flickering before they returned to normal. Did they just change colors? I could have sworn they had turned a golden-silver.

Miroku was like a brother to her, and no matter what her feelings towards Sesshomaru or Koga, they would never be allowed to harm the gentle monk. Well... Almost gentle monk. Miroku did have his moments when he scared the life out of her. They seemed to come out the most when they were training and when she was doing something that threatened her life.

The monk could be a whole other person, sadistic and deadly. Moving closer to the fire, he pulled his knees to his chest, and rested his chin on them. "I've already told you about the curse Naraku placed upon my ancestor, but I kind of left out small little details."

"From generation-to-generation, the curse would be passed down until there were no other male descendants. I am the last male of my line. Every year, the tunnel became bigger and stronger. I knew eventually it would have destroyed me and the thought terrified me."

"I had two options. One was to find a woman to bare me a son and the second was to kill Naraku. Seeing how the second was almost an impossibility, I tried to find the woman that would grant this request. Perhaps any woman would have done, but I guess even a cursed monk had his standards. Could anyone blame a guy for wanting beauty and charm. It wasn't the kind of woman that I wanted, but the way I approached them that got me in trouble."

"Let me guess," Tranquility giggled, "You were a womanizer." Miroku blushed, but nodded. "What happened to make you change? You don't act like that around me."

"To be perfectly honest, Tran, I don't think I could have. You're too innocent and I see you as a little sister. I'm not saying your not attractive, just that I can't find it in myself to take advantage of you."

Miroku threw another log onto the fire, continuing with his story. "Sango is what changed."

"The demon slayer?"

"She was everything that I had taught myself to avoid. Sango was beautiful, strong, but extremely lethal when you make her angry. She was a demon slayer, but I couldn't help but fall in love with her."

"I can't even remember when I started to like her, or when I started to change. Women no longer held the same appeal and I stopped harassing them. A few months ago, Sango had been badly hurt and I bandaged her arm. I guess I deserved it, but I had been trying so hard to change."

"Sango thought I was going to take advantage of her, and slapped me before I even had a chance to move away."

"I can't say that I blame her, but Sango should have been more patient. Perhaps she did notice the changes and didn't know how to respond. Instead of thinking about how she felt, she instantly blamed it on your past actions."

Miroku gave her a sheepish grin. "That was Sango outside the cave that morning," she asked.

"Hai."

"Why didn't you go with her?"

"To give her time to think about what she wants. As long as I'm around, she'll always try to act as if I mean nothing to her."

"Do you regret traveling with me?" Miroku heard the tremor in her voice, and sighed.

"I miss Sango, but no. This quest has given me a chance to learn a few things as well."

Moving closer to the fire, Tranquility closed her eyes and drifted to sleep. "Miroku?" she asked, her voice thick and slurred.

"Go to sleep, Tran."

"I promise to keep you safe."

"That better not mean you're running off," he growled. She was already asleep, never hearing his last words. "Crazy kid."

Miroku felt her that night, the same person that had talked to him a few times before. The first time they had connected, he had been startled and slightly angry. He quickly learned she meant no harm, only that she was curious. You're worried about her, she said.

The others know I'm here, don't they?

Hai.

I don't know if I should be grateful, or terrified.

Artemis has accepted your presence in her life. He doesn't like it, but he rather have a fighter near her than Tran trying to do this on her own.

You know who I am?

It wasn't that hard to figure it out. Even Sesshomaru added the equation together and came up with the answer.

You're not making me feel any better,' he grumbled. 'Sesshomaru isn't exactly the friendliest person in the world.

Sesshomaru would never do anything to harm Tran. He may bare his fangs at you, but I have a strong feeling Tran will give him a nasty fight over you.

She is a bit over protective, isn't she?

According to Rei and Kagome, it was a good idea that she had no idea that I was nearby or the life I lead before now.

Why?

I died twice, and it wasn't pleasant. Artemis has no idea either, and I don't think I'll tell him for awhile.

Who is Tran to you?

She's the sister I never met. Tran never saw me before she died in the past, and I was adopted when she was four.

You had a question to ask me?

Artemis wants to know if she's managed to transform yet?

No, and that bothers me.

The girl paused, returning a few moments later. Artemis doesn't like it. She should have been able a long time ago.

I think it has to do with her past and her fear that Naraku will be able to find her if she does. The ability is there; I've seen signs of it. She's instinctively fighting it.

Artemis wants you to keep protecting her. He understands why you continue to hide her. Naraku's demons have been attacking non-stop. There doesn't seem to be an end to them.

How bad is it?

Do you really want to know?

I need to know what we're up against.

Sango was badly injured yesterday and Kagome was poisoned. Artemis has spent the last several hours with Rei trying to heal them.

Rei? I think I've felt her a few times.

She's a psychic. I'm impressed that you can hide from her as easily as you do.

It's an ability I picked up from a tribe of monks several years ago. They taught me several techniques of the mind that make it impossible for demons to scan my location.

That still doesn't explain how you've managed to hide your scent for this long. Artemis is quite frustrated that you've managed to elude him.

I'm not surprised. He is a Solarian after all, but then again, so is Tran. I think a part of her does remember. She comes up with some unique ideas that I don't think she learned in the modern era.

The woman laughed. I think you've upset my guardian. He's invented a few more swear words.

Happy to oblige.

Keep her safe, Miroku. She still won't talk to any of us. All we want is for her to be happy.

I aim to please, my lady.

Sango's right. You're an impossible flirt. I can see why she likes you so much.

He felt her leave and Miroku felt better knowing that everyone was alive. Miroku didn't like the idea that Sango was hurt, but at least she was taken care of. Tran was whimpering in her sleep. Miroku had been around long enough to know that she was having a nightmare and he doubted that it was about Naraku. She had learned to block the half-demon from her mind. These were memories of the past, the dark ones she tried so hard to forget.

"My baby," she cried. "Stop! Please don't do it!" She screamed, her body convulsing and thrashing around violently against the floor. Miroku grabbed her, holding her tight as she continued to live in the past.

"Tran..." He whispered, stroking her soaked hair. "Shhh... It's only a dream... Let it go..."

"Rin..."

Miroku felt as if the wind had been knocked out of him. What the hell did Rin have to do with Tran and was it the same child that now traveled with Sesshomaru?

She couldn't scream; everything was dark and her body hurt. A sharp pain stabbed through her chest, filling her lungs with blood. They were ripping her stomach open, tearing out the life she had created. No! She wanted to tell them, drowning in her own blood.

A foot slammed into her belly, her muffled cry ignored. They kept her alive for hours, and as the last of her blood spilled to the ground, her captors had ripped the bag from her head and struck her savagely across the face. She didn't even know how she was still alive, her stomach torn open and her baby screaming at her rude entrance into the world.

Grasping her chin, they looked into her dying eyes and laughed. "Sesshomaru will die, but not before he sees the bodies of his wife and freak of a child!" Not giving her a chance to respond, he pulled his knife and slit her throat. Her vision dimming, she reached up her hand, stretched towards her baby girl. Rin, I will... A silver light bathed the camp they had taken her too, taking with it Tran's life and sending the baby to a time and place where she would be safe and protected.

"Tran, please wake up!" Again she screamed, striking Miroku painfully across the face. He had been trying for several hours to reach her, but nothing seemed to work. I need your help! He cried out to her sister.

Miroku immediately felt the presence of three people, all giving him their strength. The past has its grip on her, a male voice growled. It's killing her.

How do I help her?

Call to her. You're the only one close enough. We will lend our strength.

Miroku didn't recognize the voice, but he trusted it. "Tran! It isn't real! Let it go! You're hear, in a cave!"

With his connection to the Solarian, he was able to see her nightmares and recoiled in horror. He witnessed her brutal death again and again, and the flash of light before she died. God, I don't understand! Miroku never thought he could hate his own kind until that moment, but he did.

Now is not the time! Tran has placed all of her trust in you, and it's that trust that we're depending on to bring her back!

Miroku forced back the need to puke, but was unable to stop the flow of tears. The scene was replaying itself, but before they could begin hurting her again, he captured her in a protective embrace and carried her away into the darkness, away from the horror of that night. Tran, please come back. You don't have to live that anymore.

It hurts! Make it stop! I don't want to remember this! Please! Make it go away!

A golden and silver light surrounded them, erasing all memories of her past. Miroku knew it was the right thing to do, unable to see her suffer. That night would have sent her over the edge, and none of them were prepared to allow it to happen. Miroku, the voice roared.

He trembled in terror. This one he knew, and he was beyond angry. Sesshomaru had never been so terrified in his life, and he grieved over the child the humans had ripped from his wife. He didn't understand the silver light, nor did he try to. All he knew was his wife had been savagely slaughtered, his child taken from him.

I won't keep her from you, Miroku sobbed in anguish. God, just don't let her see that again.

Miroku couldn't stop crying, rocking back and forth with the unconscious woman in his arms. He didn't understand, his heart couldn't comprehend such hatred and violence. He showed them their location; it didn't matter if Tran would be angry about it later. Her running was insane, and he couldn't allow it. Not after what he had just witnessed.

"Mi..ro..ku..." She was awake, staring at him in pain. Images kept returning, struggling against the power trying to block them.

A tear hit her cheek, but she didn't seem to notice as she held his robe painfully tight. She couldn't close her eyes; she saw their faces, the blood and... "Humans..." she sobbed, Miroku holding her like a broken child. "They..."

"Tran, please let it go. You don't have to remember." His gentle words only made her cry harder, Miroku continuing to rock her. She was beyond his ability to help, knowing he had did the right thing by calling to the others for help. "Shhh... Let it go."

As he waited for one of her friends to arrive, he held her throughout the night, talking to her. Miroku hated her silence, the tears that would never stop on either of them. For the rest of his life, he would never forget that scene. She stared at the fire, unable to fall back asleep, nor would Miroku have allowed it.

"Miroku?" She whispered, afraid that he would leave her alone in the dark. He was exhausted, but he forced himself to remain awake.

Her eyes were filled with pain, Artemis unable to fully erase the memory. He needed to be closer, still a few hours away. In the mean time, Miroku would have to keep her calm and talking. "What is it, Tran?"

"Do you believe in re-incarnation?"

"Hai."

Pulling his cloak tighter around her shoulders, he tried to think of the right words. "Kagome is the re-incarnation of another soul, but I'm starting to think it was someone completely different. Everyone seems to think she's Kikyo re-born."

"Kikyo?"

"She was a Miko that protected the Jewel of Four Souls."

"I see glimpses of my other life," she finally admitted. "Some are good, but most of them make me sad and afraid."

"Tran, stop. We're not going to allow anything else to happen to you. Please, you have to trust in the strength and love of your friends."

"Miroku, I'm glad we met. Kagome and yourself show a side of humanity that make me believe they're still worth protecting."

How could she possibly think that after what the humans had done? Her soul was as pure as they came, but scared by the cruel hatred of the past. There was nothing he could do except be her friend, and to continue protecting her.

Before he had met InuYasha and Shippo, he had believed that all demons were evil or needed to be strictly controlled. Now Miroku knew that, like humans, that demons could be both good and evil. He had no idea where Sesshomaru stood. He was a force to be feared, created by the humans that had murdered his mate.

Artemis was the first to appear, the large Panther, pressing his nose against her feverish skin. Tran whimpered another wave of light washing over her. There were tears in his beautiful coat, and with a cry, he curled against the girl he had protected for so long.

Koga was next, just as devastated as the Solarian. Rei had been connected to Serenity, both women suffering from the nightmare with Tranquility. The wolf demon couldn't find it in himself to hate the monk, not when he looked into his eyes and saw the raw pain and horror. Miroku had been willing to die for her.

The last to join them shook the very foundation of the mountain, steam coming from his mouth and nose. Everything in him screamed to kill the human, unable to see him as a friend. All he could picture were the humans killing his wife and it was driving him crazy.

Koga blocked Sesshomaru's vision of Miroku, Artemis quietly telling the human to release Tran and slowly back away. Tran would never forgive Sesshomaru if he killed Miroku, and used their bodies to push him towards the entrance. The monk was petrified, but if Sesshomaru killed him, he wouldn't have blamed the Western Lord.

Sesshomaru took a step towards her, his eyes never leaving the two demons nor the human. He snarled, torn between going to his mate and destroying the threat to her life. Artemis growled, prepared to defend the human if necessary. Tranquility whimpered again, covered in sweat. Sesshomaru inched closer, placing his body between her and them.

He had felt the moment her barriers had dropped, re-living every moment and Miroku's cry for help. It was the only thing stopping Sesshomaru from completely destroying him. Slowly, he lowered himself to the cavern floor, wrapping himself protectively around her trembling body.

"Let's go," Koga whispered to Miroku. "Stay behind us, and do not draw attention to yourself. None of us will be able to stop him."

Miroku didn't argue, knowing his life hung by a thread. Sesshomaru was beyond reason, his youkai fully prepared to defend his mate. Once outside the cave, Miroku collapsed and started to cry uncontrollably. It didn't matter that he was breaking down in front of two powerful demons. All he could see was the blood and the baby.

He heard a sound of shimmering music, but didn't notice the Panther had shifted forms until he was kneeling before him, his eyes a piercing blue. Miroku could look in them forever, wondering how they could change colors the way they did? "She was bound to remember. You could not have stopped it."

"Does she have to?"

"For the moment, no. Sesshomaru knew what I was doing, and he didn't fight it. We would have lost Serenity as well; she was fully connected to Tranquility."

Tranquility was in a world of chaos and confusion. At times she would be surrounded by the blood and piercing pain of the knife, others she could only feel the calming presence of her mate. She didn't even ask how he had found her, Tran couldn't be away from him.

She slowly touched his face, needing to feel him, to know that he was really there. It was the only thing that temporarily took the pain away, even with the full effort of Artemis trying to take the memories away. He snarled and growled, unable to think clearly.

Sesshomaru had felt every thrust of their knives, every cry and the tearing of her flesh. She had purposely hid this from him in the past, but unable to cope with the trauma of remembering, Sesshomaru had finally seen the truth. The Western Lord had never known that she was carrying his child. She must have been at least five or six months before they took it.

The Demon Lord roared his cry of pain and loss, bringing more tears to the companions that had searched for Tran. InuYasha had never known his brother to grieve, Serenity still rocking back and forth in terror and pain. Rei had curled into a fetal position, sobbing uncontrollably.

Artemis and Koga returned a few hours later, the Panther carrying Miroku and settling him near the fire. The Monk was still in a state of shock, having witnessed Tran's thoughts and nightmare personally. It had nearly destroyed him, holding a woman that he had no idea how to help.

"What the hell happened?" InuYasha demanded, watching the entire camp fall apart. Sango had weakly thrown back her fur blankets, holding her side as she crawled to the devastated monk. She had never seen him like this and it broke her heart.

Gently she wrapped her arms around him, Miroku quickly latching on with a strangled cry. Sango was clearly frightened. Now would be the perfect time for Naraku to strike, their team unable to function or fight back. "What happened?" she begged, looking at Koga and Artemis. They were strangely quiet, nothing like the confident demons she had seen the past six months.

Artemis went to Serenity, while Koga went to Rei. For hours all that could be heard throughout the mountains and trees were the sounds of their tears, screaming and crying. It was Koga who told them what happened, the others unable to speak or repeat what they had discovered.

Kagome and Sango blanched, while InuYasha truly understood Sesshomaru's hatred of humans. The Miko, long after everyone had cried themselves to sleep, stared at the stars. Of all of us, Tran has suffered the most. When will it stop? She pleaded.

Sesshomaru couldn't recall several days, his mind a cloud of grief. He forced her to sleep, unable to watch her cry anymore. Artemis returned daily, joining his powers with Sesshomaru. Both knew she was unable to cope with the past, and it was cruel to make her.

A child. He still couldn't wrap his mind around the concept, his heart breaking again and again at the loss. Sesshomaru had never known and it was tearing him apart. The days were a blur, the Western Lord unable to focus on anything but his mate.

His youkai was unusually silent, only wanting to help its mate and mourn the loss of what it had never held. It was Miroku that broke through to them, having remembered something about the visions, having been forced to see it again and again. "She's alive."

"Who is?" Sango asked him, stroking back his hair. He had slept with his head in her lap for several days, unable to let her go.

"The child. Tran did something, but I don't understand it."

Serenity came up to the monk, her gaze penetrating and sad. Gently she took his face, the moon on her forehead blazing to life. She gasped, immediately sharing the information with Artemis. Do you understand?

Incredible, Artemis spoke. She tapped into an unknown power and pushed her child into another time. It was her last dying wish.

"It's Rin..." Miroku stammered, not making a lot of sense.

"The human child," Koga gaped.

"Do you know where she came from?"

"She was human. What did I care?"

"I think we should ask Sesshomaru where she came from."

Artemis was shocked, never having heard of this kind of power. Tran, without the aide of the Silver Crystal or her mother, had somehow managed to send her daughter into another time period. "Sesshomaru." The demon lord snarled, still trapped in his own world.

"Dammit, would you pay attention."

The dog demon lifted his powerful head, his teeth pulled back. Artemis was just as deadly, his claws fully extended. "Leave us," Sesshomaru commanded.

"The child," He persisted. "Where did you find her?"

"Why do you speak of Rin?"

"Miroku wants to know where she came from."

"She was in a field, silent and wandering."

Artemis couldn't believe what he was hearing. Sesshomaru had somehow found his daughter, and had no idea that it was her. "Why was she silent?"

Sesshomaru shrugged, "This Sesshomaru does not know."

"We need to know. Don't you understand? Tran somehow sent her daughter to a time where she would be safe and protected!"

"The child is dead," Sesshomaru growled.

"No, she's not. Miroku said he saw Tranquility use a silver light. The baby vanished, and the power took what life she had left. She's alive, and her name was Rin."

"Rin is human," he said, suddenly not so sure.

"Is she? Tran can easily be mistaken for one. She has yet to go through the transformation. Would Rin be any different?"

Sesshomaru didn't dare hope that Artemis was right. Had he been protecting his own child the entire time? Is that why he couldn't find it in himself to part with her? She had reminded him so much of his mate, that it never occurred to the demon lord she was his daughter.

"How is this possible?"

"She is half Lunarian. The power she used was not a Solarian ability."

Sesshomaru shook the fog of grief and depression from his mind, unable to change the past. "Have the Phoenix go to Rin and bring her here. This Sesshomaru will find the truth of the human's words."

"She left while I was trying to convince you."

The dog demon left the cave, moving towards the stream to wash his coat and face. Artemis sat at the entrance, watching the sky and land for intruders. Unaware of Tranquility, none of them saw the red glow pulsating around her small body.

Naraku was trying to touch her mind, but she was fighting back. Hands and feet turned into paws, her body curving towards the ground. The dead fire flared to life, engulfing the young demon female in its warmth. She didn't remember the nightmare from a few days before, but Naraku was still all too real.

Tranquility roared in open defiance, her gold-silver eyes focused on the dark shadow creeping towards her. It lengthened into a large spider, several more joining it. He had finally come for her. She was glad Miroku was no where to be seen, unaware that Sesshomaru had been by her side for over a week.

The half-demon laughed, surrounding her in a dark mist. Tranquility screamed and swiped at the cloud, the tendrils wrapping around her body. "Fighting is pointless," he purred.

Artemis came charging in, but was thrown back by a wave of darkness. Tranquility roared, opening a mouth full of sharp teeth. Her new claws sank into the granite floor, struggling against her restraints. Tran's fur was a rich red, her eyes a golden-silver.

She felt Sesshomaru rush towards the cave, and as he leapt towards Naraku, they vanished. Tran roared, the last sound either of them heard. Tran! He sounded his challenge, his voice the very promise of death. "Get Koga!"

He's already on the move, Serenity told him. We'll catch up.

Artemis was racing beside Sesshomaru, trying to keep their connection with Tranquility. It was faint and fading fast. Don't let him win! Artemis begged her.

I am not so easily defeated, Artemis! Her voice was tired, but she still had a lot of energy to fight Naraku's attempt at controlling her.

InuYasha carried Kagome on his back, Miroku riding behind Sango on Kirara. Koga had taken Serenity, all of them racing against the clock. The final battle had begun, Naraku making his move. At last, everything would finally be decided.

Miroku was angry. "I can't believe I broke my promise!"

"Miroku," Sango called, looking over her shoulder. "There was nothing we could have done. Naraku struck at our weakest moment and took full advantage of it. He would have killed you."

"He's going to change her."

"We'll get her back," she promised. "I'm not giving up on my brother, and you're not giving up on Tran!"

"Thank you, Sango. I'm glad we're doing this together."

"I hated keeping away." Sango gave him a sneaky smile. "By the way, I hope you can convince Artemis, Koga and Sesshomaru you two didn't do anything."

"Sango!" He shouted in protest. Miroku soon realized she was teasing him, trusting him completely. "When this is over, I'll show you what I didn't do," he promised.

"Only if you can catch me first," she challenged.

"Tran is like a sister." Showing her his hand, Sango could only stare in wonder.

"She cured it?"

"She used a silver light then too; that's the only reason why I thought about what I saw in her dream. She was so exhausted that she fainted. If she were close to death, that kind of energy would have finished the job."

"Naraku won't be easy to defeat."

"If he manages to change her, we concentrate on Naraku and keep Tran distracted."

Sesshomaru was losing her. Stay with me, he ordered.

Don't... she pleaded. Already I feel him taking control...

You have to keep fighting.

She didn't answer, Naraku taking full control. She can no longer hear you. Come if you dare. Know that you will kill her or die by her hand.

Tranquility hung in the air, too weak to shift back. She had been fighting for hours, feeling Naraku slowly take control. He knew how to open the right doors, fueling her pain with a dark hatred. No, there has to be something good to remember.

Was there, he whispered softly in her mind. Why would they try to make you forget? They don't want you to see the truth! The humans took everything from you, and your friends helped them. Is that what a friend is for? You spent your entire life protecting them.

Tranquility stopped snarling, letting Naraku come closer. All you know is betrayal and loneliness. Was it not your own parents that forced you upon the Western Lord? Did he not even try to stop them? She was confused, but he wouldn't stop. Image after image flooded her mind, but they were only of the battles between Sesshomaru, Koga, and the humans. Naraku intentionally blocked the good memories, wanting only the hate to survive.

Where was Sesshomaru when you needed him? He allowed the humans to take you, to take the child you never got to hold. You know the truth, young one. They hated you; they all did.

She tried to shut him out, but Naraku was winning and they both knew it. It can't all be bad! Isn't there anything worth remembering! She cried. Naraku smiled, touching her furry face. Soon he would unleash all her hate and rage, directing it towards the very people that stood in his way. It was so simple and he would be able to fully tap into her power.

"I too am hunted, Tran." His voice wavered, Naraku pretending to be afraid. Tran lifted her head, studying him carefully. "The monk's grandfather tried to murder me; was I not to defend myself? Will you let them kill me? I can't fight them all. I'm all alone, with no friends to help me."

Slowly he released her, watching her closely. She made no move to attack, stepping closer to the half-demon. She lifted her muzzle to his face, her tail moving back and forth slowly. "That's it, Tran. Help me fight our enemies. You're the only friend that I have."

All her resistance was gone; replaced by hatred and a desire for revenge. They had taken everything from her. She would kill them all, humans and demons alike! All of them were evil; they were all her enemies! Naraku laughed, feeding her a wave of darkness that consumed her heart and soul. All she could see and want was blood.

Sesshomaru's Wish

Chapter Seven

She purred against his feet, sleeping soundly when Naraku finally woke her. "As I promised, they have come." Naraku changed the tone of his voice, convincing the feline that he was truly afraid of these demons.

Tran followed him into the sun, her ears flat against her head. She revealed white, sharp teeth, the hair on her back standing up. He laid a hand on her fur, stroking her, trying to soothe the growing rage. "Yes," he whispered. "They are the ones. You know they were the ones who took your child. They were responsible for your pain. Will you let them continue? They will destroy us both."

"Naraku! What the hell have you done to her?" Miroku jumped off Kirara's back, glaring at the half-demon."

"She's beautiful, is she not?" He asked, continuing to stroke her silky fur. Tranquility had chosen to remain as the Panther, hating her humanoid form. He fed this hatred, promising to take her as his own once she had finished killing Kagome and her friends. "I've done nothing more than show her the truth."

"Who's truth?" Artemis challenged. He saw her, but couldn't recognize any part of her. Tranquility acted as if Naraku were her best friend, her eyes glowing with hate. "There's nothing you could have said that she would have believed! Tran, snap out of it!"

"There's was plenty to tell and reveal. There's nothing more lethal than a mother wishing to avenge her child."

"Those humans died centuries ago!"

"Does it matter? Humans are all the same, no matter what era you live in."

"Enough!" Sesshomaru growled. "She'll only believe Naraku at this point."

"There has to be a small part of her still wanting to fight back!" Koga protested. "This isn't the Tran we all know!"

"You're right," Sesshomaru admitted. "She died five hundred years ago. Tran was never meant to re-live that day, and I'm sorry I brought her here. If I had kept her in her era, none of this would have happened."

"Sesshomaru," InuYasha said. "We'll deal with Naraku while Koga, Artemis and yourself take on the cat. None of us are familiar with her fighting style and she won't be an easy opponent to defeat."

Naraku dropped his hand, releasing her from his control. "Kill them, before they repeat the past." Again he played her death by the humans, the ripping of her child from her womb. It was all that he needed to drive her forward, to attack the monk.

Miroku braced himself for the killing blow, surprised to see Sesshomaru take her in mid air. They crashed to the ground, the Western Lord using all his weight to weaken her. Tranquility roared in pain, hitting him hard across the muzzle with her claws. Sesshomaru snarled, lunging for her throat.

This was a life and death struggle, his youkai trying to keep his mate from killing him. Artemis and Koga wasted no time, closing in on the feline from all sides. Naraku simply laughed, knowing they would have no choice but to kill her or be killed. His hold on her was too powerful to break.

Sesshomaru welcomed the battle with her, knowing Naraku had made a fatal mistake. By allowing her to fight, he had ensured their victory. Naraku had failed to realize how many times he had defeated this feline, especially with the combined efforts of the very protectors that raised and trained her to fight. Ancients, and experienced, they easily over powered the young feline. She clawed and snapped with her teeth, uncaring of the blood that sprayed in her face.

Artemis rolled Tran to her back, but she used all her strength to bite and claw at her guardian and Koga. It would have been so simple for Sesshomaru to take her down, but not without seriously injuring his mate. His youkai protested against the idea, demanding Sesshomaru find another way if possible.

Koga was the first to go down, stumbling from several slashes to his rib cage. Lunging for the kill, Tran forgot to watch for Sesshomaru and Artemis, both locking their teeth around her neck and shoulder. They applied all their weight, driving Tran to the ground. Instead of calming, the feline only became more violent, howling and hissing in rage.

It took all his strength to keep his hold, but Sesshomaru knew she would eventually weaken. Her strength was incredible, magnified by her grief and sense of betrayal. Sesshomaru tried to reach her, but Naraku's hold was still too strong. With only parts of her past, Naraku had managed to create a perfect killing machine. Nothing they said or did would convince Tran that they were her friends instead of her enemy.

It was happening all over again. The fear, the pain... She was confused. It was different. She didn't feel the stabbing pain in her chest, waiting for the demons to make the final blow. Dark energy filled her mind, sending her into frenzy before she collapsed again, her coat covered in sweat. She growled, but her body felt like lead with the combined weight of the three demon lords.

If only she could bite the dog demon, his teeth sunk deep into her shoulder. A flicker of recognition flashed in her mind, and for a moment she stopped struggling against them. I thought they wanted to kill me; is that not why they came here?

Sesshomaru was almost completely on top of her, his larger size easily keeping her pinned. His golden eyes tried to tell her something, and it hurt to stare at them. She felt his pain, his sorrow and something else... What was it she was supposed to remember?

Koga and Artemis, each still holding onto her a part of her neck or shoulder, watched Sesshomaru release his mate and meet her gaze. He wanted her to fully see him, to know what she was trying to destroy. I promised to never leave, Lunarian. If death is what you wish of me, than I will grant your desire.

Artemis and Koga slowly moved back, watching her tense for the killing blow. She hesitated, unable to look away. Her body trembled, trapped in Naraku's dark hate and the pain in Sesshomaru's gaze. Was he crying? A single tear fell to the ground, the first he had shed in five centuries.

Sesshomaru... He felt her momentary recognition, but Naraku was fighting to keep control. She screamed, trying to shake free of it, pacing back and forth. Tran wanted to kill him, but couldn't find the energy to deliver the final blow. It would have been different if he were still fighting, but Sesshomaru was calmly waiting, letting her decide his fate.

Fate... Her gold-silver eyes glanced in the direction of InuYasha and his friends, falling on the monk that was helping the demon slayer. Miroku... He was my friend... Tranquility fought the confusion, trying to see the truth. It was within her reach, but no matter how hard she tried, it was beyond her grasp.

Fate will never be Naraku's as long as you will it so. It is determined by your will to survive. She remembered. Miroku had spoken those words to her, determined not to let her journey alone. He had defeated her, the first human to ever do so.

Sesshomaru watched Tran struggle against the memories, fighting Naraku's control of her. He didn't interfere, knowing she needed to do this alone. How old are you?

Eighteen in two days time.

That had been several months ago. She had only recently made the transformation. I know that voice! Miroku! She knew him, and she also knew that he would never harm her! Had she not promised to protect him, to stop Naraku from killing him.

Child, you still have a lot to learn.

I am not a child!

Then stop acting like one! Tranquility needed all of her memories, the good and the bad. Only then will she know the true enemy and her true friends. If the three demons had come to kill her as Naraku had said, they would have done it already. Why had Sesshomaru stopped? He had willing left himself open for her attack?

Don't feel obligated for the gift I gave freely!

Following you seems a far better fate than the one I had!

The voice was warring with the desire to kill; these people, the ones that fight Naraku, they had been her friends. But... Why can't I remember?

They could see her slowly coming back to them, but she was far from free of the half-demon's control. "She's confused."

Artemis snarled, ready to pounce Serenity as she calmly moved towards the red feline. "You cannot reach her, Artemis. As long as she remains in doubt, nothing anyone says will help. She needs someone that has never been a constant influence in her life until now, the one factor Naraku never counted on."

Slowly Serenity knelt, ignoring Tran's warning to keep away. Gently she reached up and lifted the Panther's head, her eyes filled with love and friendship. Tran snarled, but slowly relaxed. I... There's something familiar about her...

Big sis, Big Sis! Can't you come with!

They don't want me. You must go. They can give you a nice home. Promise you'll forget.

Tran reached for the silver chain around her neck, watching a red star fall to her chest. Suddenly everything came back, both the past and present. All the good, all the bad and with it a blinding rage as she turned on Naraku.

You shouldn't be here, Tran told her younger sister. Artemis, you know she's not a fighter!

Actually, he said, Serenity's been fighting for the past two and a half years.

Tran snarled, glaring at her former guardian. You didn't!

Actually, Luna gave her the ability to transform.

Serenity was never supposed to become Sailor Moon! Moving towards the battle, We'll discuss this later. I have a score to settle!

Tranquility was furious. How dare her mother allow Serenity become Sailor Moon? She had chosen her path as a warrior to spare others of the same fate. It was her sacrifice and a burden she chose to bare. The last of Naraku's dark influence left her body, but she was no less furious than if he had been in control of her mind.

It still hurt, but she could still sense the calming presence of Artemis and Sesshomaru, the two demons joining her against the half demon. They each had their reasons for wanting him dead, and she wasn't about to deny them.

Artemis...

You're still in a lot of trouble, he snapped, already knowing what she was going to ask.

Why is Kagome fighting?

Kagome was firing arrow after arrow, a blue light burning Naraku's body. "She's a Miko Priestess," Koga said.

I remember... she whispered. My past wasn't all painful, but I can see why it was so difficult to remember the good parts. So much death... I want it to stop!

Artemis was taken aback by her sudden determination, but laughed. This was the Tranquility he remembered, always prepared to fight for her friends. She was a warrior of Solaria, unlike Serenity who hated violence. Naraku is not my friend! She snarled.

Shifting back, she stood her full height, offering her hand to Serenity. A silver light flashed, separating from Serenity and shattering into thousands of little dust specks. It floated to Tranquility, giving back the power that had once been a part of her. "What happened?" Serenity asked. She felt different, stronger without the crystal.

"There was never originally a silver crystal. After I died, the part of me that wished to protect the nine planets was given to your mother. The silver crystal was powerful, but it drained the life energy from those that used it. Serenity, you power came from the heart, not as Sailor Moon."

"I know. It never seemed to emerge until I was backed into a corner."

Shouting alerted the five of them that a battle still waged. Naraku had been severely wounded, but he was still powerful. Miroku was on the ground, blood dripping from his mouth. Tranquility growled.

"Tran?" Artemis, with the last of his strength, produced a sword. "Your father wanted you to have it."

To hold the legendary sword of Solaria meant that her father had died, probably during the silver millennium. It felt warm in her hand and flared to life as she raised it. Nodding, she turned to face her enemy, but before she could charge, an arm grabbed her waist and yanked her back.

"After this is over; we're going to talk," Sesshomaru growled. Tranquility nodded, offering him a smile before he let her go. Together they attacked, fighting as one.

Artemis had fallen asleep, Serenity holding him close. Koga rested beside them, unable to finish the fight. He had given his jewel shards to Kagome to complete the Jewel of Four Souls.

"Impossible!" Naraku roared. "No matter! I had you once; I'll have you again!"

"Never!" Tranquility spat. "I don't belong to you and neither does the Jewel of Four Souls."

Spider Webs raced towards her, but she quickly dodged, slicing through them with her sword. "Back Lash Wave!" InuYasha shouted.

"Dragon Strike!" Tenseiga and Tetsusaiga combined attacks, striking Naraku full force. He screamed, but another power strengthened the attack, a fire engulfing the large spider.

"No!" All that remained were ashes and Kagome reached down and picked up the jewel.

"I can't believe it's finally over."

The Jewel began to pulse, rising into the air. With a flash, all of them were staring at the first protector of the Jewel, her eyes settling on Kagome. "I will finally be able to rest, never again to be used for such hatred. Only with the joining of the demon and human race, could I finally be free to move on. As long as people struggled to use me for evil, I would constantly re-surface throughout time."

"Who are you?"

"I am Midriko, Kagome, and you are my re-incarnation." She smiled at her startled expression. "No, you were never Kikyo in another life. She was tainted with evil, easily tempted by Naraku."

"What will happen now?"

"The wish was already made, by the only one in your group who one, never had a desire for the Jewel, and two who finally realized the truth. He's not even aware that he made it, but know that it is necessary to make things the way they were meant to be. Time must not be changed, but true happiness will be obtained by everyone here. For now, all that I ask, is that the Demons be patient and wait for what they truly desire awhile longer.

"Humans and Demons must co-exist if you are to survive the turning of the new millennium. Miroku and Sango will be the bridge between the two worlds, their courage and sacrifices not unnoticed. In time you will understand the true gift I have granted.

"InuYasha, you will finally be granted the respect in the demon world, and do not fear the youkai rage that was at odds with your human nature. I have another, but that will have to wait. Your soul mate will be allowed to die with you."

Finally her gaze fell on Tranquility, her eyes compassionate. "You have suffered what no demon or human should have been forced to endure. Sesshomaru has a gift, one that he will reveal to you upon the return to your era."

"But..." She protested.

"Sesshomaru knows what must be done. It was he who made the wish. His desire was for everything to be set the way they were meant to be, for the hate to stop and for you to be truly happy. You're wish is for everyone to be safe and loved, to never know the loneliness that you felt in two lifetimes."

The Jewel shattered, lifting Kagome, Rei, Serenity, Artemis and Tranquility into the air. In a flash, they were gone, leaving the group that remained staring at the empty spot sadly. InuYasha didn't know how to respond. He thought he would have a chance to at least say good-bye first.

"Sorrow is unnecessary," Sesshomaru told them, already heading home. Rin was standing at the edge of the clearing, confused to why a Large Phoenix had brought her here. Without a word, Sesshomaru picked her up, further confusing the child. "Five Hundred years is but a short time for humans."

"But..." Miroku said.

Sesshomaru silenced him with a glance. "You still do not understand the true meaning of the wish she granted. Sango and yourself are now immortal, to live the same life span of a demon while remaining human. You will see them again Monk. And know that if you had touched her, I would have killed you in that cave."

Miroku paled, moving behind Sango. Koga and InuYasha laughed. The wolf demon glanced at the Hanyou, smelling something different. "What?" InuYasha snarled. "It's not like you haven't seen me before!"

"You're different."

"He is no longer a half-demon, but fully into our world." These were Sesshomaru's last words before he vanished, taking Rin home. He needed time to think, to prepare for the future Midriko spoke of. Tranquility would always be his, and nothing anyone said would change that fact. It just took him a while to understand that he could never make her happy in a world where hate still existed.

Sesshomaru didn't have to turn to know that InuYasha followed, and for once he didn't have an objection. "May I return with you?"

"Do as you will," The Western Lord said. "Isn't there something you need to get first? The human was rather fond of that fox demon."

"We will see them again?" There was fear in InuYasha's voice, a seldom emotion he revealed to his older brother.

"Kagome will be in the future, but not the same. You will understand when the time comes."

Sango gently wrapped Miroku's arm, still needing to clean his face. He didn't seem to mind, a sad smile on his face. "You miss her."

"Hai, but we'll meet again. Perhaps it's best that I don't see her for awhile. It'll give me the time to cope with what the humans did to her."

"Miroku?" Gently, Miroku lifted her chin, seeing the doubt in her eyes. "You said we could talk after..."

"It depends if you're ready for the conversation," he teased, his other hand stroking her face. Miroku spotted blood on her shoulder, immediately moving behind to see the nasty cut Naraku had given her. "We should take care of this. Remember the last time."

Sango blushed, almost moving away. Miroku waited; the demon slayer would make her choice. Half way on her feet, Sango decided to trust the monk and relaxed. He smirked, already ripping at her favorite uniform. "Miroku!"

"Did you want to take it off?" Sango could only open and close her mouth, unable to respond. She had taken them to an isolated valley, stopping at a small lake. "Not that I wouldn't have done it eventually anyway."

"You..." Miroku was lightning fast, his arms wrapped around her middle. To keep her from using her legs, he circled them with his thighs, watching the red seep down past her collar.

"Is this not what you wanted?" he teased. "With no curse, there should be no reason for me to pursue you as a wife. Is that not what you were thinking, Sango?"

She felt his fingers tug at her silky shirt, pulling it free of her pants. Sango strained to break loose, but Miroku was tired of allowing the demon slayer to deny her feelings and him. She tried to turn her head and look at him, but the Monk pulled her closer and started a trail of kisses down the side of her neck.

Sango tried to find a reason to yell at him, but nothing she said would have convinced Miroku that she didn't want this. He knew otherwise, and Sango would be lying to herself again. Shouldn't she wait for marriage; wasn't that the proper way?

His nimble fingers managed to work their way beneath her shirt, stroking her sensitive skin. Sango felt the heat in her face, spreading to her stomach and lower. She didn't understand what was happening and started to struggle. "Stop," he gently told her. "Am I hurting you?" He taunted, knowing her slayer pride.

He allowed her arms to break free, amused at her hand flying to his fingers. His hands continued to move upwards, diving beneath the restrictive cloth that denied what he wanted. With an impatient growl, he tore it free, oblivious to her weak protest.

"Those clothes were expensive," she tried to argue.

"Sango, you're starting to sound like Tran! Stop it, or I'll give you the same lesson I gave her!"

She glared at him, her temper quickly getting the better of her. Miroku soon had her beneath him, her arms trapped by his iron grip. Sango could only stare at him in open mouth shock. "You're so use to the softer side of my nature, Sango. I think you would prefer if I dropped the act and reveal my true strength and self."

Miroku lifted her arms higher, joining them together to hold in one hand. She tugged at them, surprised that she couldn't pull free. "Sango, were you about to hit me again?"

She didn't know how to respond, turning her head away, Miroku having other ideas. He forced her to meet his gaze, his eyes dark and trembling with emotion. Sango gasped. "Miroku..."

"You have a nasty temper, Sango," he whispered. "When will I get through that I love you more than life itself, that I want you to return it."

Sango knew the look that appeared on his face, struggling to get away. Miroku tightened his grip, settling on her stomach as he held her down. He barely had to touch her side, but it was all it took to have her jerking and laughing. "Damn it Miroku! Stop!"

"I think we need to work on this temper of yours." Miroku increased the pressure, totally breaking through her defenses.

"You win!" The monk paused, ready to attack again if she tried anything. Miroku released her arms, resting his hands on the ground. She stared up at him shyly, no longer denying how she felt. "Did you mean it?"

"Do you think it was because of the wind tunnel that I wanted you?"

"How could I have thought differently?"

"I haven't changed, Sango. I've only directed it towards one instead of several."

He liked seeing the red on her cheeks. His hands moved to her stomach, continuing with what he had started sooner. "Should I show you how perverted I can get?"

"Miroku!"

Stopping at the point where he had torn the piece of cloth, he gave her a glance, a promise in his dark gaze. She squirmed, crying out when his calloused fingers stroked the swell of her breasts. Miroku wanted more, tearing at the remainder of her clothes.

Thankfully she had more in her bag. Miroku leaned forward, capturing a nipple between his teeth and tongue. He watched her every move, encouraged by the thrusting of her hips and her soft cries of pleasure. Sango was no longer fighting him.

Miroku had been with several women, but this would be the first time he had actually made love to one. Switching to the other, he worked his hands to her pants, slowly pealing them away. He didn't want her to be aware of what he was doing. Sango was truly free when she didn't think about her next actions, and that was the way Miroku wanted her.

He kissed down her stomach, nipping at her small belly button before he continued. Sango was slowly coming back to reality, but before she could think about what he was doing, he dove between her legs and stroked her with his tongue. Her reaction was instant, ringing a ear shattering scream from Sango. Miroku inserted a finger, stretching her, intrigued by the clenching of her muscles.

He added a second, quickly followed by a third. Miroku could feel the barrier to her innocence. "Say it Sango," he encouraged. "Tell me what you want?"

Sango didn't have the capacity to form a coherent thought, sent over the edge again and again by Miroku. Another wave slammed into her. "Miroku, please." She wanted something, but didn't know what it was.

Miroku had all the time to teach her the things that would drive her crazy. Right now this was for her. He started a path back up her body, claiming her mouth. "Tell me what you want, Sango. This choice will be yours to make."

Her arms slowly wrapped around his neck, pulling him closer so she could kiss his mouth. "I know that I was miserable while you were gone the past six months."

She lifted her hips, watching the pure desire blaze brighter in his eyes. Miroku was straining to be gentle with her, but they both knew that's not what she wanted. Sango was a demon slayer, and needed, no wanted his dominant side just as desperately. Sango was shocked that she liked this side of him, wanting him to claim her the way a man would claim a woman.

"I want... Miroku I don't want you to leave. I love you."

Three simple words, that was all he needed as he drove into her with a single thrust. Sango tensed, and he gave her enough time to adjust and relax before he took her the way she needed. Her legs wrapped around his waist, allowing him to go deeper and harder.

Miroku was in heaven, not believing how one act could feel so perfect. He never wanted to stop, would never get enough her. She had buried her face against his shoulder, crying out with each thrust. He wrapped an arm under her hips, lifting her slightly off the ground. Sango exploded in a world of pleasure, but Miroku didn't stop. He kept the pressure building until everything came together in a final climax that left her unconscious. He smirked, brushing a silky strand of black hair from her face.

"I had no intentions of letting you leave, Sango," he whispered. Slowly, he eased from her warmth, curling close and stroking her flushed skin. She was beautiful, despite the scars left by her brother. "I swear to you, after we find Kohaku, we'll live at my monastery and help him recover from Naraku's control. I'll never make you regret loving me."

To tell the truth, Miroku wanted her again, but chose to wait until she recovered enough to wake. He had so much to teach her, smiling in excitement. Miroku couldn't wait. He laid awake, keeping his promise as he took Sango in another wave of passion. For two days he made love to the beautiful demon slayer, finally allowing her to get up and search for Kohaku. Riding behind her, both were truly happy as they traveled through the sky.

Rin rested her head against Sesshomaru's shoulder, wanting to ask him a million questions but was afraid he would make her walk. Sesshomaru had traveled through the night, carrying her silently. "What is it Rin?"

She hid her face against his soft shirt, still unable to tell him her thoughts. Sesshomaru stopped, gazing down at the shy girl. "Rin, this Sesshomaru wonders why you tremble?"

"You're not sending me away, are you?"

"Why would you think such thoughts?"

"People are always really nice when they're about to leave me behind," she whispered.

Sesshomaru gently set her down, kneeling to her level. Her eyes widened, unsure of how to respond to his usual behavior. "Who were your parents, Rin?"

He saw her immediate withdraw, the girl he had found so long ago. "Rin," he gently called, his voice calming. The coldness everyone was familiar with had vanished. He seemed more regal to Rin, happy almost. Sesshomaru didn't smile, but he didn't have to. Rin knew something had changed him.

"I don't remember much," she finally answered. "From time to time a traveler would care for me, but they always left in the end. After I was three, I was alone, learning to find food and water on my own."

"Is that why you never spoke?"

She nodded, moving beside Sesshomaru as they sat. He didn't push her away, instead holding her close as she told him of her life. "I never learned how. One day I was wandering a field of corn, finding you badly hurt. I didn't know what to think at first. You looked so sad."

"I could have killed you," he growled.

Rin smiled, her eyes growing heavy with sleep. "I felt safe with you. After I bandaged your arm, I started to wander off, but you came for me."

"We will talk again," Sesshomaru said, letting her rest. Gently he moved aside her long bangs, surprised he had never paid much attention in the past. Sitting right in front of him, the one thing that would have immediately told him who she was, was a black crescent moon.

He smirked, apparently Rin would take after her father, becoming a dog demon when the time came. In the mean time, he would raise her as an heir of the Western Realms should be raised, her clothes unsuitable. Shifting, he gently rested the sleeping child onto his back and began to run, enjoying the feel of the wind against his fur.

What was another five hundred years when he would finally have everything he wanted? Humans had taken everything away, but it was these humans that had given it back. Sesshomaru knew then that he owed a great deal to the human monk, Miroku having been the final key into breaking Naraku's dark control.
