A close-up of the mass (not a great photo unfortunately). This view shows a small section (about 12 cm.) of the membranous-like golden "skin" exposed and flipped forward. The original mass seems to be reduced to this skin-like layer which is adhered to the treebark, and the masses of sooty spores loosely cling to it until disturbed.
