This is the Brefeldia Maxima as it appeared on November 11, 2001, one month after finding it in Gillies Grove. The original mass had now turned to a golden flexible skin coated with furry strands of sooty spores. If the mass was even slightly disturbed, great puffs of spores would float out from it. I'm hoping to revisit the forest occasionally in 2002 to watch for the appearance of any new masses. While at the forest on November 11th, I found a 10 cm. diameter section of branch lying on the ground about 3 metres from the Maple with this mass on it, with what appeared to be a couple of new growths of Brefeldia (at the white stage). These were not large... perhaps 6-8 cm. in diameter. I left the branch where it was and am now hoping to drop in at the forest again soon (maybe on the 18 or 19th) to see what is happening to it. (See next page of this slide for closeup of mass).
