Climacodon septentrionale

"Northern Tooth Fungus" or "Shelving Tooth Fungus"

Photographed on Oct. 13, 2001 in Gillies Grove, in Arnprior. These are large fungi with tooth-like bristly fibers protruding down out of each bracket (see close-up below). I found 4 of these masses in Gillies Grove on that day and on Oct. 20th. All were growing high on Sugar Maple trees, approx. 3 or more metres above the ground. One tree had two large masses of these fungi on it with one mass at least 10 metres above the ground. For more information about the Northern Tooth Fungus, visit Tom Volk's "Fungi of the Month" for February 2001.
