Chapter 77, Front Desk |
"Hey Izzy!" Howie greeted Izabel with a tight hug. "I thought you weren't going to come for a few days. Where are the others?" Izabel asked while looking around the abnormally quiet airport. "Brian didn't tell you." Howie stated; almost a question. "Tell me what?" Izabel asked. "I was already in LA. I've been here for a few days already. I'm just meeting the rest of the guys. I guess they decided to follow me in my quest." Howie joked with a small laugh. Izabel looked at him with a blank expression. "Your quest?" She finally asked after a moment of silence. "Yeah, you know...my final and desperate attempt to get Breanna back. If I succeed, then I don't know what we're supposed to do next." Howie joked. He wanted Breanna back in his life more than anything but he was starting to question how things would work out between the two if that were to happen. It couldn't go back to the way it was but it couldn't get worse.
Howie was in deep thought when he realized that Izabel was acting different. "Izzy, what's wrong?" Izabel looked around the airport hoping Brian's plane would magically appear. "There's something you need to know, I think." Izabel stated as she took Howie's latte away from him. She took a long drink before handing it back to him. "Caffeine?" Howie smiled at her. Izabel nodded. "Okay, what's going on?" He finally asked as an announcement of the Orlando flight came on. "Five more minutes. Good..." Izabel replied as she looked towards the ceiling where the announcement came from. "Izabel..." Howie stated. Izabel sighed and looked into Howie's eyes. She was always forward with everyone. "Your little quest may be put on hold for a long time, D. Something happened this week. Actually, yesterday." Izabel replied, staring down at her hands. "What happened?" Howie didn't want to hear the answer but continued to listen. "Well, you know Alexei..." Izabel started to explain as Howie nodded his head. "...he and his girlfriend were going to the mountains this weekend because he wanted to propose to her. Well, Bree found out and freaked out..." "She was always over protective of him." Howie offered in explanation. "well no, it wasn't because of the proposal. She freaked out because they predicted that a snow storm would hit the mountains and she didn't want him driving. Well, they argued and argued but finally he got tired of it and hung up on her and went to the mountains anyway..." "What? He hung up on Bree? She must be hurt." Howie didn't see anything wrong with what he was hearing. He wasn't putting the pieces together as Izabel continued to talk. "Yeah, she was hurt. But that's not it. You know what? I'll just skip the long story line. Basically, he never made it to the mountains. He was killed in a car accident." Izabel said bluntly. "What!? Ohmigod! How's Bree? Is she okay? Where is she? Do the others know? How's Eve handling the news? When's the funeral?" Howie asked quickly. Izabel almost laughed but realized it would be wrong. "I don't know how Bree is, really. She's in her own little world right now. She's staying at her parents house. The others know. I called them on the plane a little over an hour ago. I'm not sure if Eve knows yet, either. She was asleep when I told Brian. No word of the funeral. They barely found out around 5 yesterday night." Howie was in shock as he watched an airline employee open the gate doors. "C'mon. They're here." Howie said as he stood up.
Brian carried out Thomas as he continued to sleep while Nick and AJ distributed Brian's carry-on luggage evenly between the two. Brian had filled Nick in on what happened with Alexei while Eve continued to sleep. Five minutes before landing Kevin broke the news to Eve. As the guys walked off the plane soberly, Eve trailed the group as tears ran down her cheeks. "I guess they told her." Howie whispered to Izabel as she nodded in agreement. Izabel was happy to see her son and fiancée but went over to Eve to comfort her distraught friend. Kevin had Sarah with him while the group watched the two women. "How're you holding up?" Howie asked AJ. "I'm fine. It hasn't hit me that one of my best friends is gone." "It will at the funeral." Howie replied as he gave AJ and slight hug. "Yeah...anyway, how are you? Have you seen her yet?" AJ knew that Howie hadn't but opted to play dumb. "No, not yet. She's staying at her parents house according to Izabel." AJ listened but started to drift away. "Ready?" Izabel asked. "Ready? What?" AJ replied as he broke away from his thoughts. "Ready to go home." Izabel stated. "Home?" AJ asked again. Izabel jokingly smacked him in the head. "C'mon, Bone. We're goin' home. We're all staying at Bree's house. Even Howie is." Izabel explained as she pointedly looked at Howie who was obviously confused.
As they walked out of the airport Howie realized that they were going to take two different cars. "Who's riding with me?" He asked the group. "Well, I guess we can." Kevin said in reference to his family. "I still have room for one more." Howie replied. "I'll go!" AJ spoke up. "So that means Brian, Thomas and Nick will be going with Izabel." Howie said. "I'll drop you guys off at Bree's house then I'm going to go back to my hotel to pick up my things." Howie added as they walked to the parking structure. "I'll go with you." AJ said as he walked behind the group. "Where'd you park, Izzy?" Howie shouted to the front of the group. "Second floor!" She shouted back. "Me too!" He replied. She turned around and smiled. "You wouldn't happen to have a royal blue 525i Beemer, would you?" He looked at her with a surprised face. "Yeah, I do." "Oh in that case, we're parked right next to each other."
After Howie had dropped off Kevin, Eve, and Sarah at Breanna's house, he and AJ drove back to his hotel. "Staying at the Loews again!" AJ joked as he sat comfortably in the leather seat of Howie's rented BMW. "Like always. Man, you know I like that hotel." Howie replied. "Yeah, I know. It's you." AJ said. "Yeah, it is." Howie said quietly as he concentrated on the road. The snow was starting to fall again and Howie wanted to get back to the house as quickly as possible. "Do you remember how to get back to Breen's house? Cause it's starting to snow and I'm not sure if I'll be able to remember if we have to hold off until tomorrow morning." Howie explained as he made his way into the parking structure of the Loews hotel. "Yeah I remember. Now, let's hurry! You go pack your things and I'll get you checked out. I'll be up to help you carry your things to the car in about ten minutes." AJ explained as the two guys got out of the car; walking towards the garage elevator. While inside the elevator, AJ was visibly cold as he shivered. "Get some meat on those bones, Bone!" Howie replied. "Oh that was real good." AJ replied to Howie's little joke. Howie smiled to himself as both men stepped off the elevator. AJ walked off towards the left while Howie watched him with an amused smile on his face. A minute later AJ went walking past Howie in the other direction. "I forgot...it's over here!" AJ replied pointing towards the lobby. Howie laughed and shook his head as he followed his friend. "Most of my things are still packed so it shouldn't take me long!" Howie shouted to AJ from the elevator as AJ argued with the front desk.
Howie ran around his room packing up anything he unpacked. He zipped up his last bag and looked around the room for anything else he may have left. Realizing that he had everything packed, he turned around and pulled his two pilot suitcases behind him while his backpack and laptop bag were on his shoulders. As he started to walk out the door, he felt someone staring at him. He turned around slowly expecting to see a ghost in his room but was surprised to see the lap nearest the bed was on. He could have sworn he had never turned it on while staying at the hotel. As he walked over to the lap to turn it off, he noticed a framed picture. "I almost forgot this!" He said aloud as he picked it up. He looked down at it for a moment and smiled to himself. It was a framed picture of himself and Breanna taken when they first got together, the night she found out about what he did for a living. They were backstage and Howie had his arms wrapped around her waist from behind as he rested his chin on her shoulder. Both were smiling ear to ear as his wet hair sent tears of water streaming down her cheek. He remembered Breanna sending him that photo a few weeks after she went back home; he never left home without it. Howie broke away from his happy thoughts and quickly put the picture away in his backpack. He, again, grabbed his suitcases and went out the door. Before closing it, Howie turned around and whispered "thank you, Lex" before closing the door.
Howie exited the elevator only to hear AJ's loud voice. "Why can't you check him out? You saw me talking to him! You heard him telling me he was gonna go get his things!" Howie laughed slightly as he made his way over to the front desk. "I'm sorry sir, but we cannot check him out. He must do it in person but according to the computer, he's already checked out anyway." The young overnight manager tried to explain to AJ who was being moody. "How can he be checked out? He isn't even here! *I* was supposed to check him out." AJ tried to explain again. "I'm sorry sir, but I'm just going by what the computer tells me." AJ huffed getting ready to yell again when Howie broke in. "I'm sorry for my friend's behavior. I did ask him to check out for me." Howie explained as he handed AJ an extra jacket, knowing that AJ was too skinny to take the cold. AJ mumbled his thanks under his breath while he glared at the manager. "But sir, it states you are already checked out." The manager replied. "I know. I am, actually." AJ looked at Howie with an unpleasant expression. "I E.C.O.'d." Howie explained to the manager as he nodded his head in understanding. AJ glared at Howie again. "I could tell when I was going to my room that you weren't in the mood to deal with hotel staff so I electronically checked out before I left my room. Sorry, man!" Howie apologized. "Oh I don't care! Let's just get the hell outta here before another damn storm hits!" AJ stated as he took off towards the elevator with one of Howie's bags. Howie and the manager stood at the front desk laughing under their breath. A minute later AJ came walking back, heading in the opposite direction. "I knew the elevator was this way!" AJ stated trying not to make an ass out of himself which he was doing so well.
