Chapter 71, Telling The Others |
Breanna glanced at her clock and realized that it was already 10am. She bit her lip and stood up to pace around the living room. Izabel re-entered and watched Breanna with a confused expression. "Did you tell them?" She asked. "Uh-huh." Breanna replied as she continued to pace. "What's wrong? What happened?" Izabel was concerned with the way that the guys had reacted. Breanna had finally told her best friends that she was sick but she couldn't bare to tell them everything. Not until she talked to Howie, but Izabel already knew that. She had only wanted Breanna to inform them of her condition. "Nothing happened. Brian was really quiet, I didn't talk to Nick, and AJ already knew because he read something I had written while we were in Vegas. The medicine wore me out so much that I passed out at the desk in our room and he had me carried to bed. I'm assuming that's when he read it." Breanna explained to Izabel speaking at an incredibly fast rate. "But they all seemed to have taken the news well, right? I know that Brian is probably in shock, but the others?" Breanna stopped pacing and looked up at Izabel. Breanna pushed back her long hair out of her face and held it with her right hand at the base of her neck. "They are fine with it, Iz. I don't know how Kevin is going to tell Eve, but he'll figure out a way." Breanna said as she sighed, letting go of her hair. She continued to pace around occasionally glancing at the clock. "What is with you?" Izabel demanded, her hands on her hips. "Lex hasn't called me, Iz. Something's not right!"
Kevin walked into his bedroom with Sarah asleep in his arms. He placed his little girl down in her bassinet so she could finish her nap. He looked up at the clock that read 1 PM and decided to wake his wife. Eve looked so comfortable and peaceful as she slept with Kevin's pillow curled up next to her body. Kevin smiled to himself as he sat on the bed next to Eve. He slowly pushed her long hair out of her face so her lips would be exposed. He leaned down slowly and brushed his lips against hers. Eve stirred but did not wake up. After a moment Kevin watched as her eyes fluttered open slowly. "Hey." She greeted. "Hey yourself. I let you sleep in." He explained. "Where's Sarah?" She asked as she yawned. "Asleep." He replied. "Still?" Eve asked in disbelief. "Still? It's barely the beginning of her nap." He stated. "Nap!?" She questioned as she sat up in bed quickly. Kevin looked at her sideways and laughed. "Yes, nap. It's already 1 o'clock." He informed her. "You let me sleep almost all day!" She shouted as she threw back her covers to hop out of bed. "Shhh! You'll wake the baby and I had a hell of a time getting her to sleep." He said as she smiled at him. "Why'd you let me sleep so long?" She finally asked from their walk-in closet. Eve was picking out something to wear for the day before she jumped in the shower. "Well, at first I was only going to let you sleep until 10, but...well, something came up and I just wanted you to get as much sleep as you could. Sarah and I did just fine, anyway. We haven't really spent any father-daughter time together yet so I figured we might as well start now." Kevin explained with a proud smile on his face. "Oh yeah; Something came up? Like what?" She questioned as she grabbed her bathrobe and an extra towel. "I'll tell you later. Go take your shower, you smell." He replied as he held his nose between his index finger and thumb. "Shut up!" Eve jokingly replied as she walked into their bathroom.
Howie woke up to the sounds of someone running down the hallway. He grumbled to himself before he turned on his side to glance at the clock. "10 o'clock? I've been asleep for two hours?" He questioned allowed to no one in particular. "Man, sometimes I can't stand kids!" He said as he sat up in bed, mentally blaming his being awake on kids playing around in the hallway. "I hate hotels, too!" He added. Hotels had a way with playing with Howie's mind. He never knew where he was when he woke up, what city he was in, what time it was, what *day* it was, or where anything was placed. Sometimes the beds weren't comfortable, sometimes they were *too* comfortable. The mini bars were always calling his name, but when he left, so was the bill for the 10 dollar per mini bottle of Absolut Vodka that contained barely a sip or the 5 dollar granola bar that was sold at the store down the street for 50 cents. Howie shook the annoying and pointless thoughts out of his head as he walked over to the sliding glass door the led to the balcony; tossing open the curtains. The sun flooded in to his room as his eyes squinted in reflex to the light. "Now it's 10 o'clock." He stated.
"Something's not wrong, Breanna. You're over reacting." Izabel said calmly. "Iz, it's been over 12 hours. He would have at least called to let me know that they were alright and to prove to me I was wrong." Breanna tried to explain. Izabel thought for a moment and realized that Breanna was right but she didn't want to alarm her. Breanna was already stressed out as it was and she was in no condition to be in that situation. "Bree, they're in the mountains. They probably made it right before the snow storm hit so the phone lines probably got knocked out." Izabel replied, trying to rationalize the situation. "But he has a cellphone!" Breanna whined. "Bree, he's probably out of range." Izabel replied again. "Yeah, I guess you're right. I'd just feel better if someone would call to let me know that he's alright." Breanna sat quietly at the kitchen table staring out the window as the snow continued to fall. "You know what, Hun? Why don't you go upstairs to take a nap." Izabel suggested. "I guess. I'm feeling worn out anyway. Take messages for me unless it's important then you can wake me." Breanna stated as she walked slowly up the stairs to her room.
Kevin watched as Sarah continued to sleep quietly in her violet and white bassinet. "She's still asleep?" Eve whispered as she approached him from across the room. "Sleeping like a baby!" He cooed quietly. "Oh that was corny!" Eve whispered as she slugged him on the shoulder. "Hey, that hurt!" He replied rubbing his shoulder. "Oh Mr. Greek God got hurt?" Eve teased. He playful picked up Eve and carried her outside their bedroom towards the living room. He started to tickle her as she squirmed playfully in his arms. He finally tossed her on the couch and pinned her down. "Okay, what is this about a Greek God?" He asked as he continued to tickle her. "That's what Breanna called you when we first saw you and Howie. That's the only way we could tell you two apart. Greek God and Latin Lover." Eve explained. The mention of Breanna's name caused Kevin to go serious all of a sudden. "Hey, what's the matter?" Eve asked with concern as she sat up on the couch to lay a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Eve, we have to talk." Kevin said soberly. "What's wrong?" She asked frantically, sensing that something wasn't right. "It's about Breanna. She called this morning because she had something to tell us." He started to explain. "Tell us? Tell us what?" She asked. "She's sick. Not *too* sick, but she's not really too healthy, either." He replied. "Sick? With what?" Eve felt a little more calm now that she knew no one was dead. "They found cancerous cells in the lining of her stomach. It hasn't developed into full blown cancer, but it could. Right now she's on medication and she's been instructed to live away from stress until they start to do more tests." Kevin finished explaining. "More tests? When are they going to do those?" Eve felt the panic rising in her but knew it wouldn't do any good. There wasn't anything she could do this time. "In three months. Right now she's okay but she wanted to tell us just in case things take a turn for the worst." Eve had tears streaming down her face as Kevin rocked her in his arms. "She'll be okay, Eve. She's a strong woman, you know that. I know that. The entire world knows that, too." Kevin stated trying to comfort his wife. "I want to see her, Kevin." Eve replied through her tears. "Baby, she'll be okay. She's been sick for over 6 months and she said things haven't changed since she found out. Anyway, she's in LA and you have Sarah to look after." Eve pulled away from Kevin and glared into his eyes. "Kevin, I want to see her. And I'm taking Sarah. You can come or you can stay, but I'm going." Eve stated as she got up to go upstairs to pack her things.
Howie took a long, hot shower to try and relax his tense muscles and to help him stop from thinking. When he emerged from the shower, he quickly got dressed and shaved. He decided he wanted to be clean shaven and let his hair down instead of pulling it back. After he was done he grabbed his cellphone and wallet and glanced down at his watch. It was almost noon. He knew he didn't have an appetite but decided to grab a banana out of the mini fridge in his room. He grabbed an Armani Exchange cap that he had borrowed from Brian during their Millennium tour and placed it on his head. He looked in the mirror a smirked. "I look like a Latin Brian." He placed his sunglasses on the bridge of his nose and walked out the door towards the elevator. Once in the parking structure Howie looked around for his rental car. He wasn't even sure what car he had picked. After 15 minutes of aimlessly walking around he noticed a familiar royal blue 525i BMW. He laughed when he remembered going to a party with Breanna's family and her cousin jokingly calling his wife his BMW; Big Mexican Woman. Howie stopped thinking about Breanna for a moment to read over directions that AJ had given him. "Continue to go down Pacific Coast Highway and make a right on Sunset Blvd." Howie read off the first set of directions to himself. Before long he had put the car in drive and was off to fix his future.
