Chapter 31,  The Family

Brian walked back to the club where AJ, Nick, and Alexei were waiting. As he walked, he quickened his strides, occasionally wiping a tear off of his face. Brian was angry. This was probably the worst and at the same time the best day of his life. But he was too hurt to enjoy it.

Brian saw the club and quickly walked towards the front door. The bouncer recognized him and opened the door. "Thanks" Brian mumbled, glancing around the club until he spotted AJ dancing with a pretty young girl. It was barely 11 o'clock. For the past 45 minutes he had been with Izabel and Thomas. He already felt an aching in his chest to be near that little boy. Brian pushed the thoughts from his mind and made his way towards their table where Nick sat staring at everyone.

"Hey Frick!" Nick shouted, looking a little more sober. "Hey, Frack." Brian replied giving Nick a small smile. "What's wrong? What happened? You look like shit!" Nick pointed out. Nick sat up in his chair to look more closely at his friend. AJ looked over the shoulder of the girl he was dancing with and noticed something was wrong. He had a feeling his suspicions were right about Izabel. AJ excused himself from his dance partner and started walking towards Brian and Nick, stopping quickly to wave Alexei over from across the club. Both guys walked towards the table and sat down. "He won't talk." Nick informed them. "I need time." Brian said quietly but no one heard him on account that it was too loud in the club. "C'mon. Let's go." Alexei stated.

When they started driving back towards Alexei's house, Brian motioned for them to stop at the hotel. "I want to pick up a few things." He explained. Alexei nodded his head, looking into his rear view mirror at Brian's face before looking at AJ. AJ looked at Alexei's reflection and shrugged his shoulders. Nick sat in the front seat trying to figure out what happened between Brian and Izabel. Brian had been his best friend ever since they met. He felt a little upset because Brian didn't tell him about what just happened with her.

Alexei made his way into the hotel parking lot and parked the car near the hotel entrance. Everyone hopped out of the car slowly, wondering towards the elevator in the parking lot that took them up to the lobby. Brian walked alone, quietly. He was in deep thought. Several times Nick had to help guide him towards his room because Brian was in such a daze that he didn't realize where he was walking. "I'll be out in a minute." Brian smiled slowly to his group of friends. They all shared one hotel room but they decided to give Brian his space. Brian grabbed his duffel bag and tossed a few things in it before sitting hard on the edge of his bed. He put his head in his hands and sobbed quietly. After a few minutes Brian picked up the phone and dialed three digits. On the third ring a man picked up the phone. "Hello? This better be good!" "Kevin...I need...to...talk to...you." Brian managed to get out. "Brian!? What's wrong!? What happened!?" Kevin yelled out, waking Eve in the process. "What's going on?" Eve asked as Kevin hushed her to listen to Brian. "Remember...when I told you...that if I knocked up a...girl, you'd...be there for...me?" Brian asked in a slow voice. Kevin sat on the edge of his bed, letting out a long sigh. "Oh Brian...no..." Kevin said to himself. "I'll be right over." Kevin hung up the phone and dressed quickly. "I'll be right back!" Kevin said, walking quickly out of the room "I'm going with you" Eve said following him out the door. Kevin ran into Nick, AJ, and Alexei outside of Brian's room. "Hey, what are you doing up?" AJ asked. "Brian called me." Kevin said, glancing back and forth between his friends. "Why aren't you in there with him?" Kevin asked. "He said he'd be right out. He needed time to himself." Alexei stated. Kevin nodded. "He saw Izabel tonight." Nick whispered trying to comprehend what his friend was going through. Then it hit Kevin like a ton of bricks. He blew at his hair that had fallen into his face and knocked quietly on Brian's door. Brian opened the door and Kevin walked in. "You guys coming?" Brian asked, wiping a tear from his eye. Nick, AJ, and Alexei strolled in slowly as Eve closed the door behind them. "Nick told me you saw Izabel." Kevin began. Brian nodded his head, sitting on the edge of his bed. "What happened?" Kevin coaxed. "She has a son." Brian whispered. Kevin's eyes grew wider as he put what Brian had said over the phone together with what he had just stated. "He looked identical to my baby pictures. He's mine." Brian finally admitted. Kevin and the rest of the guys let out a long sigh together. Brian let a few more tears drop before he started talking again. "That's why she ended it, Kev. She was pregnant and didn't want to ruin my life because we finally made it big here. She was looking out for *me* Kevin! Not herself or even the baby. How can I be angry with her for that? But she never told me I had a son! I've missed out on almost the first two years of his life. What am I supposed to do? I want my son to be with me and I want Izabel back, but where do I begin? We can't just pick up where we left off and pretend nothing happened. I don't want my son growing up without a father!" Brian wasn't crying because he was hurt or angry, he was crying because he felt he had betrayed his son. Nick didn't know what to do. There sat his best friend who was going through something he couldn't comprehend. Brian sat on the edge of the bed rambling on with endless thoughts and feelings while everyone listened quietly, occasionally nodding their head. Nick finally stood up from the floor where he had been sitting and walked over to where Brian sat. He grabbed Brian by the hands and lifted him up. Brian looked up into Nick's eyes while tears streamed down his face. Nick let a tear fall before pulling his best friend in for an embrace. Brian cried harder before he finally calmed down. Nick let go, pulling Brian back but holding onto his shoulders. "I'm going to be the first one who's gonna look on the bright side of things. Congratulations, Dad!" Nick smiled to Brian. Everyone in the room waited for Brian's reaction. Brian stared at Nick for a few seconds before giving him a smile. The rest of the room started to congratulate Brian.

Kevin walked away from the little group to make a phone call. "If you're Alexei you are FUCKIN DEAD!" Breanna screamed into the phone. Howie awoke with a start. "No, Bree, it's Kevin. We really need you and D down at the hotel. Like, NOW!" Kevin demanded from his cellphone in the bathroom. "Why, Kevin? What happened?" Breanna was becoming scared. "Where's Eve?" She asked. "Relax, Eve's fine. It's Brian. We just need you two down here for support." Kevin explained. Howie sat up in bed and motioned for Breanna to hand him the phone. "Kev, it's D. What happened?" Howie was just as worried as Breanna. "Hey D. Um, it's Brian. Remember that girl, Izabel?" Kevin asked with caution. "Yeah, I remember Izzy." He said. "Well, Brian saw her again...and well, maybe you should come down here and I'll explain." Kevin stated with a sigh. "I guess I could head over to the hotel. But Breanna should stay here and sleep. She has finals tomorrow." Howie said. Breanna made a face in protest. "I really think she should be here. Eve's here but I know how close Brian and Breanna are. They are practically brother and sister. All they need are papers." Kevin tried to joke. "Well, if Eve's there and all. Geez, it must be serious. Why don't you tell me what's going on before we get there?" Howie asked as he put some clothes on. Breanna was running around looking for some clothes for the next day and her backpack. She planned to leave straight from the hotel to school. "No, D. I'll let Brian tell you. Just get down here, please? We're family and he needs us right now." Kevin commented. Howie sighed and looked over at Breanna who was washing her face and brushing her teeth. She walked out of the bathroom and gave Howie a small frown. He motioned for her to come to him. He put his free arm around Breanna as he continued to talk to Kevin. "Okay, Breanna's ready to leave. We'll see you in 15 minutes?" Howie asked. "Sure, see you soon. Room 1227." Kevin stated. Howie agreed and hung up. "What was that about? What's going on?" She asked Howie as they walked down the stairs towards the garage. "Brian found his lost love. I don't know anything else." Howie commented. Breanna set the house alarm and closed the door behind them.

When Breanna and Howie arrived at the hotel they ran to the elevator up to the 12th floor. "The 27th room is to the left." Breanna pointed. They found the room and pounded on the door. AJ answered and greeted them quietly. Brian sat on the bed with Nick next to him, his arm wrapped around his friends shoulder in comfort. Breanna's face turned pale and tears started to slide down her cheek when she saw how upset Brian had been. He was no longer crying, instead he was smiling as Kevin mumbled something about being able to teach pee-wee baseball and basketball. Kevin sat with his knees up on the floor directly in front of Brian who sat on the bed. AJ sat in a chair as Eve stood in the background watching the scene. Breanna stared at Brian who finally looked up to realize she was there. Howie had his arm wrapped around her waist but let go so she could walk towards Brian. Brian stood up and jumped into Breanna's arms. "Okay, tell me what's going on." Breanna demanded with a comforting smile. "This girl I used to love, Izabel..." Brian trailed off looking into Breanna's eyes. "I know that much. Howie explained as much as he knew." Breanna stated. "Well...I finally found her again. It's like if Howie lost you and found you two years later, ready to pick up where you left off." He explained with a hopeful smile and a twinkle in his eyes. "Then why look so sad?" She asked. "Hey you, let me finish!" He playful stated. "Okay, okay. Finish." She smiled back at him. "I found her. But, she has a son." He looked into Breanna's eyes hoping she understood. "You're upset because she has a child? But you love children! You even said you wanted many of them!" Breanna pointed out. "No, Breanna, you don't get it. He's almost a year and a half. Breanna, he's *my* son." With that said Breanna's face fell and Howie's jaw dropped to the floor. Breanna thought for a moment how this could be so terrible. Shocking, yes. But terrible? No. Brian had everything going for him. He would be the best father in the world. He had the love in him to raise a million kids without neglecting a single one. Breanna's eyes grew large as she looked into Brian's. "But that's great, Brian! You have a son. He's so young he won't notice the 18 months that you were gone. And the best part of this is that you had a son with the woman you truly love. Brian, you shouldn't cry! This is great! You can support him financially and emotionally! Brian, you're going to be a great father!" Breanna stated. She smiled back at him and hugged him. Brian sighed and realized she was right. "You just need a little time to get used to this whole idea. Give yourself time. How old is he exactly?" Breanna asked. "A year and a half, maybe older." Brian stated. "You didn't get your son's birthday? Oh well, you have plenty of time for that." Breanna was excited. "I'm going to be a god mother!" She joked to the room. Everyone started to see the positive side to the situation and laughed at Breanna. "Yup, you are!" Brian agreed. Howie looked at Breanna while she kept talking to Brian trying to make him feel better. Howie realized that he had finally found his love. The love he had been looking for all his life. He grimaced when he thought about losing her. Breanna turned around to look at Howie. "Hey! You're an uncle!" She pointed out while the room smiled on. "Yeah, an Uncle...AGAIN!" He shouted. "This is one big family!" Eve pointed out. "Yeah, my family. Thanks you guys." Brian said with a small smile. "Like I said, Bri, I got your back the next time you knocked some girl up." Brian looked at Kevin and fell to the floor laughing. "This is what I always want to see out of you, young man!" Breanna joked as she stood over him, straddling him with her legs. Brian sat up and pulled her down on top of him, tickling her. "STOP! Brian!!" Breanna giggled. Brian finally stopped tickling her and looked into her eyes while the rest of the room stood around them. "Thanks, Breanna. I love you." He smiled. "I love you, too." She replied.

"So, when do we get to meet him?" Nick asked. "Tomorrow. I hope." Brian replied. "Good! I can't wait to meet my cousin and welcome him into the family." Kevin said smiling, pulling Eve onto his lap. "Yup, let's welcome him into the Backstreet family!" Howie smiled. Everyone laughed, including Breanna who sat herself in Howie's lap. Howie kissed the back of her neck. "I think I just realized something." Howie whispered as the rest of the room talked about baby Thomas. "And what would that be?" She replied. "Oh nothing. I just found love." "I thought you found that months ago." Breanna replied with a confused expression. "No, you don't understand. I finally found *my* love."
