Chapter Twenty-One |
"No AJ! Don't try to argue with me about it because, frankly after the past two days of hell, I don't want to hear it. Save it for someone who cares." Xanda shouted as she stormed down the hallway of the studio. AJ followed Xanda as she walked into the waiting elevator. "Where the hell do you think you're going?" They both shouted at each other. Xanda held back a smile at the humor of the situation. "Where are you going?" Xanda repeated. "With you. You're not leaving until you hear me out." He stated calmly. "You do realize that there are probably 200 fans downstairs with cameras. The minute you step off this elevator there are going to be flashes going off and THEN your picture including mine will be all over the teeny bopper magazines and on websites galore. You do NOT want to make this situation any worse." Xanda explained. "Then hear me out." He pleaded. Xanda sighed as she leaned across to hit the stop button of the elevator. "Fine. You have exactly two minutes so you better start talking." AJ started to pace around the small confinements of the elevator before turning his attention to Xanda. "Fine. Brian insulted you on the air. I have let it slide enough as it is but when he did it on the air that was my breaking point. I won't sit around while someone I lo...someone I care about is trashed to the whole public. Sorry Xanda, but as hard as it is for you to accept, if anyone says anything negative about you then I'm gonna do something about it even if it is one of my best friends who's doing it." AJ stopped talking and watched as Xanda pushed the lobby button. "I'm going home. Call me when you're not busy." Xanda said quietly. She knew AJ cared about her but his temper affected her. If he could go about it another way then everything would be fine but that wasn't the case.
Once the elevator stopped and the doors parted Xanda looked down quickly. She walked out of the elevator hoping that the fans wouldn't see AJ. "OHMIGOD!" They screamed or shouted, pushing each other toward the opened elevator. AJ quickly lunged out and grabbed Xanda by the back of her arms and pulled her back inside the elevator. He hit the 'close' button just as Xanda cleared the doors. Xanda was slightly flustered, her hair tousled. "Thanks." She mumbled as AJ watched her closely. "I'm sorry." He said as Xanda tried to fix her hair. "Yeah, I know." She whispered. The past two days had taken an emotional toll on her stability. She only went to the studio to see his smiling face, hoping against all hope that he would take her mind off of her problems. "What's wrong?" He asked as he hit the stop button. Xanda looked up at him with sorrowful eyes and trembling lips. He didn't need to hear anything else as he opened his arms for her to walk into. Xanda cried quietly as she let her head rest on his chest. "Tell me about it when we get home?" AJ whispered, feeling Xanda nodded her head.
AJ pushed Xanda's shoulders back and grinned. "You're too stubborn for your own damn good." He said quietly as he wiped away a few tears. "I know." She acknowledged. "So? What are our plans for tonight?" He questioned as they walked slowly out of the elevator. "Tonight? You know I don't like to look into the future. I don't know about anything for tonight but I do know that you should you play your cards right..." She trailed off as AJ's eyes enlarged and a large smirk appeared on his face. "...with Brian." She added causing AJ's face to fall. "Man, I don't wanna fuck him!" Xanda laughed as they made it to the studio. "Be nice. Play fairly and if you have any problems with him then take it off the air or I will end up dragging your ass out of the studio." Xanda threatened. "Oh, a promise!" AJ said with glee. "You only wish, babe." She replied as AJ walked back into the studio to make peace with Brian even if he didn't mean it.
"Hey everyone, it seem AJ's back!" The DJ shouted causing the other four guys to look up. "When's the next commercial?" AJ asked the DJ before sitting down in front of his microphone. The DJ held up two fingers in response with a questioning expression. AJ looked at Brian who was watching Kevin as he spoke about their new album that was due in stores the following week. AJ knew if he stared long enough then Brian looked up. Brian felt eyes staring into the side of his head and glanced up just as AJ had predicted. "I wanna talk to you." AJ mouthed as he put his earphones on. Brian knew he was in for it and nodded solemnly. "So AJ? Tell us about Miss Wonderful." The DJ said as he tried to start a new subject. "Miss Wonderful?" AJ questioned, playing dumb. "C'mon man! I saw her dragging you down the hall when you and Brian were arguing a while ago. She doesn't seem like a person you would wanna mess with." The DJ laughed causing the others including Brian, to laugh along with him. "She's actually a softly." AJ replied as he looked over at Xanda. "Oh shi...oot!" Nick laughed when he caught the look that Xanda was giving to him. "I'm assuming your ass is grass during the next break." The DJ laughed again. AJ nodded his head in agreement. "We've known each other since last November but we haven't been dating very long. She's great and we get along well. That's all I can say about our relationship. Ya know, something's gotta remain unsaid." AJ explained. "I respect that, man. We won't pry any further but I wanna meet her later." The DJ stated as AJ grinned. "No problem."
After the commercial break AJ and Brian made a small pact with one another. They agreed not to try and kill each other over some woman. Xanda meant a lot to AJ but he wasn't sure if it was love or not. But whatever it was, he wasn't going to let Brian ruin it but at the same time he agreed with Brian that Xanda wouldn't ruin their long term friendship. AJ and Brian had barely sat back down in the studio when the DJ began to speak. "Okay, all you listeners have been requesting that we do another 'telling-these-stories-will-haunt-you-for-the-rest-of-your-life' segment that we did with 98 Degrees and Mandy Moore. Well, we got the guys to agree to it so what do you say? Shall we get started?" The other guys shifted in their seats knowing that the stories that they were going to tell would truly live to haunt them for the rest if their lives if not just the rest of their careers. "Who's gonna start?" He asked. "I will!" AJ held up a hand while the others guys groaned. 'He better tell a story about himself' Howie thought. "Alright AJ...who are we gonna embarrass?" The DJ asked with a smirk. "Okay...here's the deal. When we were in Europe last year Howie and I decided that it would be cool to go bar hopping..." He paused. "...in Germany." He finished as Brian and Nick started to crack up. "So, D and I were into this bar full of really hot women. Well, these women kept buying us drink after drink and pretty soon we were plastered to say the least. So, by 3am these girls are egging us on to strip for them. Well, I volunteered but no one wants to see my skinny ass up on stage naked. So, they asked D to strip for them. Well, he was WAY more drunk than I was goes up on stage and he's doing his groove thang. I mean, he actually stripped naked! Full blown naked. No shoes, no socks, nothing! Oh D, thanks for the permanent visuals." AJ sarcastically said in Howie's direction as Howie grimaced between laughs. "And these girls were throwing money at him! He was all into it. Shaking his ass, sliding around on that pole, and having a good time. Well, he didn't see the beer that someone had spilt on the stage and all of a sudden, he's down! He just totally falls on his ass in front of all those women. One of them jumped on stage and attacked him. It was the funniest damned thing I've ever seen! And to make it worse, one of those women had seen D's face plastered all over her daughters room. Man, the stories that mother probably told her daughter over Sunday morning breakfast!" AJ mused as Nick fell out of his chair cracking up.
"Howie's not like that at all! That's what makes that story so funny!" Brian laughed. "Man Howie, you will NEVER hear the end of THAT!" The DJ cracked up. "Unfortunately I won't. But paybacks a bitch!" Howie shouted to AJ. "Remember that phrase, AJ, cause it's part of the story that I'm gonna tell about you." He added. AJ thought about it for a moment then his eyes became wide. "No you don't!" AJ shouted as Howie cracked up laughing. Howie looked up at Xanda and saw the glare she was giving him. "Well, maybe not." Howie stated quickly causing AJ to sigh with relief. "Thanks, babe." He said on the air as Xanda smiled at him. "Okay, I need another story. Nick?" The DJ asked as the other four guys groaned knowing that Nick had a hard time keeping his mouth shut. "Okay, let me think of somethin'...Oh, I got it!" Nick stated as he looked over at Brian who was oblivious to what Nick was about to say. "Okay, let me just say this. Brian and AJ's girlfriend don't get along. I'm not gonna lie. Some people in life just don't get along and it's not because one person is nice and the other isn't. They just don't get along. Different personalities, ya know?" The DJ nodded as Nick continued with his story. "Anyway, a few weeks ago we had this concert thing for the Make-A-Wish Foundation and afterward we were gonna have a small party at Kevin's house just for our band and dancers. Nothing fancy or crazy. Just chillin', ya know? So it's after the party and we're all in the backyard. AJ and his girl are gettin' a little cozy and Brian walks by and yells at them to get a room. Well, Xan, um, AJ's girl gets up and walks over to Brian and tells him something. And she's quiet so we can't hear it but it makes Brian really mad. He says something back to her and it made her flip. She was just angry! So after a while, Brian and I go inside and we're hangin' out for a while. Brian makes a few drinks and we were getting a little drunk but hey! We're over 21 and we weren't gonna be drivin', ya know." "Nick, you digress WAY too much!" Kevin laughed. "Look who's talkin'." AJ added with a laugh. "Okay, the point is Brian and I drank too much and Xan, um, oh well, I call her Xan. So Xan thought that it would be the perfect time to pay Brian back so she's being REALLY nice to him which is RARE. Actually, it never happens but Brian's too drunk to really notice. Well, Xan kept giving him more and more to drink. Not too much!! She doesn't hate him or want him dead or anything. They just don't get along." Nick glanced up and noticed that the other guys were trying not to laugh. They all knew that Xanda couldn't stand Brian in any way, shape, or form. "So, she gets him totally trashed hoping that he would pass out. Well, he did and she runs and grabs her makeup bag. She gave him a total makeover! I mean, bright lipstick, blush, the whole nine yards! So, the next morning he woke up with the WORST hangover and lookin' like a woman but the funny thing is that Brian had no clue! He goes outside to get the newspaper for Kevin and finds about ten fans hanging out outside hoping for a glimpse of Kevin. Well, they got more than they bargained for!" Nick laughed. "Oh man, you are so dead!" Brian said as he cracked up laughing.
