Gabrielle Roth -- 5Rhythms
"The soul can only be present when body and spirit are one," exclaims Roth (Maps to Ecstasy) in this amiably free-flowing spiritual autobiography. She goes on to explain how dance can be the path to soul or true self. Roth discovered dance as a means of self-initiation and integration through a career that began with a stint as a massage therapist at the wellspring of the human potential movement, Esalen Institute. There, Fritz Perls invited Roth to teach movement to his therapy groups. Prodding her physically frozen students to sense their bodies and breathe, Roth quickly discovered that "two hours of moving were as powerful as two years on the couch." She came to isolate five rhythms related to five archetypes or states of being. Roth claims that even terminally inhibited people can learn to enter these rhythms and sense how it feels to inhabit "mother, mistress, madonna, father, son and holy spirit." The three feminine archetypes follow a flowing rhythm, according to Roth, while the energy of the masculine archetypes corresponds to a staccato rhythm. Roth discovered that when the masculine and feminine fuse, a rhythm of fertile chaos results, as in acts of artistic creation or love. The resolution of chaos is the lightness and liberation of a lyrical rhythm, while stillness is the most profound rhythm of all. Roth's entertaining, appealingly conversational tale, full of breezy asides about Manhattan restaurants and scenes, will tantalize readers into believing that dancing is indeed a joyful way to "sweat" prayers, to seek our innermost truths as they are lived, in movement.

Sacred Dance
It's not necessarily a Judeo-Christian thing. It's not necessarily within a religion or a church. As Iris Stewart writes:
Dance is divinity, a natural state of grace in which we all reside. In its sacred form, dance is a language that reunites the body, soul, and mind....
Dance becomes sacred as the beauty of movement communicates the divine ideal. In sacred dance, one is found and used by the soul of nature, the energies of which are perceived rhythmically as the continuous dance of life and form. Dance invites a state of exhilaration that the Mevlevi Sufi call hadrah, or "the presence," each step moving us upward toward a new freedom of the spirit, toward ecstasy....
Dance and ritual create community, drawing people together both emotionally and physically in a special sense of intimacy and shared abandon. As the community participates, no one is a stranger any longer....

Sacred Woman, Sacred Dance: Awakening Spirituality Through Movement & Ritual by Iris J. Stewart
(ISBN 0892816058) July 2000
Today we primarily think of dance as a form of entertainment or as a way to exercise or socialize. There was a time, however, when dance was considered the way to commune with the divine, a part of life's journey, celebrating the seasons and rhythms of the year and the rhythms of our lives. Dance is a language that reunites the body, mind, and soul. While the role of women's sacred dance was most valued in goddess-worshipping cultures where women served as priestesses and healers, dance was once an integral part of religious ritual and ceremonial expression in cultures all over the world, including Judaism and Christianity. In this book the author investigates how dance came to be excluded from worship and reveals how dance is once again being integrated into spiritual practices. Sacred Woman, Sacred Dance is the first book to explore women's spiritual expression--women's ways--through a study of dance. It describes sacred circles, birth rituals, ecstatic dances, and dances of loss and grief (in groups and individually) that allow women to integrate the movements of faith, healing, and power into their daily life.

Kindred Spirits: How the Remarkable Bond Between Humans and Animals Can Change the Way We Live by Allen M. Schoen
(ISBN 0767904311) Feb 2002 (Amazon.com Rank: 28,096)
Invoking the "mystical, magical, or metaphysical" aspects of our relationships with animals, veterinarian Schoen (Love, Miracles and Animal Healing) recounts his dawning awareness of amazing acts of courage and compassion by animals toward both their human companions and one another. Early in his career, his golden retriever, Megan, came to act as his "ecumenical guide" and veterinary assistant, responding to the distress of an injured lamb, kitten or cow--or panicked human onlookers--with loving licks. In an engaging work that is part memoir, part argument for a more holistic approach to veterinary medicine, this "left-brained" man of science tells how he gradually learned to observe and respond to an animal's emotional state, as well as to the physical needs he was trained to focus on. Since then, with Megan's help, he has learned to care for animals on both levels, and has incorporated alternative medicine into his practice. While a growing number of books espouse our interrelationship with animals and attempt to change our attitude of superiority, this account is distinguished by Schoen's fresh voice and seamless writing. "As we learn more about our connections to animals, we will consider them our heart," Schoen believes. "More than anything else on this earth, animals have the facility to make sure we remain connected to our deepest feelings.... Always remember: Do unto all animals as you would do unto yourself."

Forming a complete and compelling picture of the inner lives of animals, When Elephants Weep assures that we will never look at animals in the same way again.

The Smile of a Dolphin: Remarkable Accounts of Animal Emotions by Marc Bekoff (Editor), Stephen Jay Gould
(ISBN 156331925X) Oct 2000 (Amazon.com Rank: 57,811)
Longtime mates Turbo and Kachina get agitated whenever the other is even briefly out of sight. Kanzi, jealous of his younger sister, throws temper tantrums when she outperforms him. Tulip giggles when shes tickled and loves to play games. And Ake gets angry when scolded; she once hurled a plastic pipe at her teacher when the instructor rebuked her for failing a task.
Turbo and Kachina, Kanzi, Tulip, and Ake are, respectively, a pair of Arabian horses, a bonobo, a rat, and a dolphin. In each case their devotion, jealousy, playfulness, and anger, their display of emotion, was observed and reported by a scientistan expert in animal behavior whose formal training has discouraged either anthropomorphic thinking or jumping to conclusions.
In this unforgettable collection of stories, more than fifty experts on animals ranging from great apes to guppies present compelling evidence that, when faced with such circumstances as losing a child; confronting an enemy; choosing a mate; or being tricked, chastised, challenged, played with, or picked on; many animals do seem to have an emotional response, one whose underpinnings may be strikingly similar to our own. Whats more, these familiar feelings occur even in such unlikely animals as birds, reptiles, and fish.

Minding Animals: Awareness, Emotions, and Heart by Marc Bekoff, Jane Goodall
(ISBN 0195150775) March 2002 (Amazon.com Rank: 81,857)
Thinking bees, ice-skating buffaloes, dreaming rats, happy foxes, ecstatic elephants, despondent dolphins--in Minding Animals, Marc Bekoff takes us on an exhilarating tour of the emotional and mental world of animals, where we meet creatures who do amazing things and whose lives are filled with mysteries. Following in the footsteps of Konrad Lorenz and Niko Tinbergen, Bekoff has spent the last 30 years studying animals of every stripe--from coyotes in Wyoming to penguins in Antarctica. He draws on this vast experience, as well as on the observations of other naturalists, to offer readers fascinating stories of animal behavior, including grooming and gossip, self-medication, feeding patterns, dreaming, dominance, and mating behavior. Many of these stories are truly incredible--chimpanzees medicating themselves with herbal remedies, elephants clearly mourning a dead group member--but this is not simply a catalog of amazing animal tales, for Bekoff also sheds light on many of the more serious issues surrounding animals. He offers a thought-provoking look at animal cognition, intelligence, and consciousness and he presents vivid examples of animal passions, highlighting the deep emotional lives of our animal kin. All this serves as background for his thoughtful conclusions about humility and animal protection and animal well-being, where he urges a new paradigm of respect, grace, compassion, and love for all animals. Marc Bekoff has gone deep into the minds, hearts, spirits, and souls of animals, giving him profound insight into their lives, and no small insight into ours. Minding Animals is an important contribution to our understanding of animal consciousness, a major work that will be a must read for anyone who loves nature.

Music, the Brain, and Ecstasy: How Music Captures Our Imagination by Robert Jourdain
(ISBN 0688142362) March 1997 (Amazon.com Rank: 34,379)
Bringing together discoveries from neurophysiology, psychology, music theory, and philosophy, Robert Jourdain moves from the simplest aspects of music, such as sound and tone, to the more complex, like composition and performance. In clear, accessible language, Robert Jourdain writes about the extraordinary array of physical and mental functions involved in the appreciation of music.
Music, the Brain, and Ecstasy is divided into chapters on the basics of sound and aspects of music and the way music is perceived, then it considers the neurological and emotional adaptations of composers and musicians to the demands of the music. He notes that there is no proof that any particular brand of emotionality is tied to musical greatness.
Stretching the mind in every dimension that music occupies, Robert Jourdain encourages one to think like a paleontologist, a neurophysiologist, an acoustician, a psychophysicist, a musicologist, a composer, a performer, a sociologist, a linguist, and a philosopher. He looks at the evolution of music, and introduces surprising new concepts of memory and perception, knowledge and attention, motion and emotion, all at work as music takes hold.

Beethoven's Anvil: Music in Mind and Culture by William L. Benzon
(ISBN 0465015433) Oct 2001 (Amazon.com Sales Rank: 166,922)
It took a cognitive scientist who is also a musician to notice an obvious but scientifically ignored linkage: making music together is something that enables humans to improvise cooperation on the fly. Benzon uses his own experiences as a musician to tie the extensive citations in biology, psychology, sociology, and economics into a sense-making narrative. Benzon believes that when people make music together they create a kind of shared brain-state that exists in no single head, but emerges from the synchronized communications of a group. and uses an impressive body of knowledge to back up his case. Benzon might be proved right and he might be proved wrong, but he uses solid science and creative conjecture to make a highly readable as well as reasonable case.

Solitude: A Return to the Self by Anthony Storr
(ISBN 0345358473) June 1988 (Amazon.com Rank: 30,092)
Storr's celebration of creative solitude is a counterbalance to the chorus of self-help books extollng interpersonal relationships. This British psychotherapist links the capacity to be alone with self-discovery and becoming aware of one's deepest needs and feelings. Taking Goya, Kafka, Trollope, Kant and others as examples, he shows that solitude, far from being a flight from interpersonal contact, is an inveterate need, at least in some people. He analyzes extroverts who become depressives by losing themselves in the outer world and argues that fantasy is not inherently escapist, as Freud contended. The Jungian process of "individuation," he demonstrates, sheds light on the mature artistic forays of Beethoven, Brahms and Henry James. People need a sense of participating in a larger community than either family or friends can provide, and Storr's message is that the solitary's search for wholeness is a valid avenue to relatedness.

Women's spirituality circles have taken to drumming in a big way. Redmond has been a leader in reintroducing the frame drum, which, she persuasively argues, has been an instrument of spiritual transformation for millennia. Her marvelous book brings together mythology, history and prehistory, personal experience, musical lore, and scientific information on the healthful effects of drumming. Scores of illustrations show stately goddesses holding frame drums, wild maenads tossing their heads as they pound, and priestesses sanctifying space with the rhythms they beat. Redmond's own story of learning drumming in a society in which women are still actively discouraged from taking up the drums is a paradigm of female experience. Wise and passionate, Redmond's book will find a ready audience, made up not only of those who have attended her popular workshops but also of other women drawn to the ecstatic pulse of the drum.

Tantric Love : A Nine Step Guide to Transforming Lovers into Soul Mates by Ma Ananda Sarita, Swami Anand Geho, Ma Ananda Sarita, Swami Anand Geho
(ISBN 0743215311) Sept 2001 (Amazon.com Rank: 5,898)
A reviewer says "This book really pleased several lamas I know, who were astonished to see these usually hidden healing techniques made so available and so user-friendly. These are simple but powerful visualizations for "soul retrieval" and physical and mental healing. They're written by a Tibetan healing master who gives the authentic Tibetan material in terms that Westerners can easily grasp."

Another says "Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche's Healing With Form, Energy And Light covers the five elements of earth, water, fire, air and space and blend a Tibetan tantric viewpoint with discussions of how each of these elements work in Taoism. Recommended for practitioners of Tibetan shamism and yoga."

Bare: On Women, Dancing, Sex, and Power by Elisabeth Eaves
(ISBN 0375412336) Oct 2002 (Amazon.com Rank: 65,499) In her absorbing book, Eaves goes behind the scenes of the lucrative stripping business to examine the motivations, thoughts, and lives of the women who work in it and the men who patronize it. Much of Eaves' research is firsthand--she worked as a stripper at a Seattle strip joint called the Lusty Lady. While there, she examines both her own attitudes toward stripping and those of the women around her. Contrary to popular belief, not all strippers are "damaged" or man-haters...

(ISBN 0300074395) March 1998 (Amazon.com Rank: 194,177)
During a short but incredible life, Lola Montez transformed herself from middle-class British daughter to notorious adventurer, attracting admirers and scandal wherever she went. This highly entertaining biography uncovers the real story of one of the best-known women of the Victorian era-a dancer and actress, a power behind thrones, and a mistress across four continents.

Dance, Sex, and Gender: Signs of Identity, Dominance, Defiance and Desire by Judith Lynne Hanna
(ISBN 0226315517) May 1988 (Amazon.com Rank: 406,543)
Ambitious in its scope and interdisciplinary in its purview. . . . Without doubt future researchers will want to refer to Hanna's study, not simply for its rich bibliographical sources but also for suggestions as to how to proceed with their own work. Dance, Sex, and Gender will initiate a discussion that should propel a more methodologically informed study of dance and gender.
