Riverdale rezone paves way for new developmentBY KELLY BINGHAM Standard-Examiner correspondentRIVERDALE – A 17-acre retail development off Riverdale Road is expected to move forward with a recent rezone by the City Council. The council gave its unanimous approval last week for the final plans of the development, at 550 W. Riverdale Road. The 17 acres was rezoned from a C-2 commercial and M-1 manufacturing zone to a C-3 commercial zone with a Retail/Commercial Park overlay paving the way for a major retail center. The new 202,000-square-foot shopping complex will be located in the vacant area south of Lowe’s Home Improvement. It will feature JC Penney and include approximately 11 new retail stores and restaurants. While favoring the overall development, Councilmen Stacey Haws and Doug Peterson expressed concerns about how the new JC Penney complex would impact traffic on Riverdale Road, 550 West, and Pacific Avenue. “Currently, at peak times there are approximately 4,700 travelers along Riverdale Road,” said Councilman Hawes. “It’s estimated we’ll see about a 10 percent increase with this development.” |
