Local Charity Hopes to Pedal Away Parkinson’s
KAYSVILLE, UT June 12, 2007 - The 2nd annual “Pedal Away Parkinson’s” charity bike ride event will be held on Tuesday July 24, 2007 at 8:00am in Kaysville at Gailey Park located at 200 South and 300 West.
Individuals and families are invited to participate in the 10 mile bike ride to raise money for the Utah Chapter of the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA).
This cause is close to Meredith Smith, APDA Ride Event Director. Her mother, Sherrell Healey is one of 10,000 Utahns, and 1.5 million nationwide diagnosed with this incurable disease. Despite difficulties related to her 9 year struggle with Parkinson’s, Sherrell continues to live an active life and is currently serving a mission for the LDS Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Parkinson’s disease is a progressive degenerative neurological disorder characterized by body tremors, impaired muscular coordination and slurred speech. Late stages of Parkinson’s often cause other complications including choking, pneumonia, and falls that could lead to death.
The 10 mile ride will begin and end at Gailey Park. There will be activities and prize drawings for a new mountain bike and other prizes. All proceeds go to APDA. Last year “Pedal Away Parkinson’s” raised several thousand dollars for Parkinson’s research.
