Daniel Mainwaring, der als Autor von Kriminalromanen unter dem Pseudonym Geoffrey Homes bekannt wurde, ist am 27.2.1902 in Oakland, Kalifornien geboren, wuchs auf einer Farm in der Sierra Nevada auf und ging auf das Fresno State Teachers College. Er arbeitete kurze Zeit als Lehrer, schlug sich dann als Obstpflücker, Vertreter, Detektiv und Reporter für den San Francisco Chronicle und den Los Angeles Examiner durch, bevor er als Roman- und Drehbuchautor zu Anerkennung kam. Sein erster Roman, One Against the Earth, ein bitteres Porträt der US-Gesellschaft, das mit dem Lynchmord an seinem Helden endete. Das Buch war kein kommerzieller Erfolg und Mainwaring wandte sich danach dem Kriminalroman zu - bis 1946 entstanden 12 Werke mit den Helden Robin Bishop (Zeitungsmann), Humphrey Campbell und Jose Mauel Madero . 1934 begann seine Arbeit bei Warner Bros. als Publizist - dabei lernte er eine Reihe von Schauspielern, Regisseuren und Autoren kennen, mit denen er später zusammenarbeitete. Nachdem zwei seiner Romane an Studios verkauft worden waren, wurde er von Republic als Drehbuchautor für den Film Secrets of the Underground (1943) engagiert. Innerhalb eines Jahres (1946) schrieb er sechs Drehbücher für die Action-Melodramen der Produzenten William Pine und William Thomas - von denen er später allerdings nur noch eines (Big Town, 1947) gelten ließ. Im Anschluß verfaßte er seinen letzten und besten Kriminalroman, Build My Gallows High, ein gelungener Versuch im Hardboiled-Genre. Nach diesem Roman schrieb er das Skript zu Jacques Tourneurs Film-Noir- Klassiker Out of the Past (Goldenes Gift), das von Taylor Hackford unter dem Titel Against All Odds (dt.: Gegen jede Chance) 1984 erneut verfilmt wurde. Mainwaring wurde 1948 von Howard Hughes bei RKO gefeuert, weil er sich weigerte, am konservativen Film I Married a Communist mitzuarbeiten. Mit einem weiteren RKO-Opfer, Joseph Losey, kam es zur für beide Seiten sehr befriedigenden Kooperation am außerordentlich sozialkritischen Film The Lawless. Insgesamt schrieb er dann fünf Drehbücher für Filme, bei denen Don Siegel Regie führte, der letzte war The Gunrunners. Danach verfaßte Mainwaring nur noch ein wichtiges Skript, nämlich für Walk Like a Dragon (1960). Es folgten Filmspektakel für europäische Produzenten und viel Fernseharbeit. Daniel Mainwaring starb am 31.1.1977 in Los Angeles an Krebs.

"You'd written some mystery novels in the thirties. Did you sense different interests and different themes in this novel in the forties? Well, Build My Gallows High was a different kind of book, entirely different. First I had a detective named Robin Bishop, and I got sick of him. Bishop got married and then got awfully soft, and I got fed up with him. I changed to Humprhey Campbell, who was a tougher one. With Build My Gallows High I wanted to get away from straight mystery novels. Those detective stories are a bore to write. You've got to figure out 'whodunit'. And Dan remembers them all. He's a much underrated writer and he's a really quite noble man. He damaged himself with drink and he was very badly hurt by the blacklist."
