The date is January 8, 2261. Garibaldi has been missing for nine days.The episode opens with Dr. Franklin recording a medical log. Lennier enters Medlab, explaining Delenn's physical condition. Concerned, Franklin goes to her quarters to try to convice her to give up her fasting. Delenn believes that it is her fault that Sheridan is gone, and vows to continue her fast until he returns or she dies. Franklin leaves it at that.
G'kar, in his quest to find Garibaldi, lands on a planet to meet someone who may have some information regarding Garibaldi's whereabouts. However, he finds the locals to be most unpleasant, and ends up alone in a bar fight, or so he thinks. Marcus Cole, out of nowhere, comes to his aid and together they suppress the opposition and escape just before a Centauri guard enters the bar to see what happened. Learning of the reward for G'kar's capture, one of the locals "has some information." Marcus wants to stay with G'kar to help him find Garibaldi, but G'kar insists that he return to B5. Later, several Centauri guards locate G'kar and take him into custody. G'kar is taken to Centauri Prime in shackles as a "gift" for Londo Mollari from Emperor Cartagia.
Being awakened in the middle of the night, Londo meets with Cartagia to receive the gift, which he feigns to appreciate. Later on, Londo secretly meets with G'kar and gives him a proposal. If G'kar helps Londo assassinate Cartagia, he will be set free. G'kar agrees to help Londo IF he promises to remove Centauri forces from Narn. Londo agrees to the deal.
Dr. Franklin calls Delenn to Sheridan's quarters. Trying to find which belongings of Sheridan to keep and send to his family, Franklin comes across an old personal log of Sheridan's which relates to Delenn. The log was recorded the day that B5 seceded from the Earth Alliance. . .
After viewing Sheridan's log, she calls upon all the Rangers and the entire White Star fleet to ask them to attack Z'Ha'Dum. Although the Rangers are scared, they readily agree to follow Delenn. The plan is to wait 7 days for reinforcements to arrive, then attack.
Meanwhile, Sheridan and Lorien become acquainted. Lorien explains that he is the original "First One" and was old when "the molecules of [Earth] came together to form Land and Sea." He explains that Sheridan is caught between life and death, and that Sheridan must either accept death, or find something worth living for. Lorien takes Sheridan back to the incident on Z'Ha'Dum at the instant he jumped from the parapet and asks if he has anything worht living for. Remembering a flashback, at the last moment John finds something to live for: Delenn.
