~*Gina Kincaid*~

The History of Gina Kincaid~

EX-GH star Vanessa Marcil glides into Beverly Hills as a fallen figure skater who's set to make trouble for her rich cousin Donna...the show's producers couldn't be happier to welcome her to the family. Literally.

Marcil, who debuted on Nov. 18, plays a professional ice skater Gina Kincaid, Donna's (Tori Spelling) first cousin. "She's the relatively poor cousin," explains Executive Producer John Isendrath. "Donna's mother married 'up'- to a doctor in Beverly Hills. Gina's mom didn't. "Instead, Gina's family sacrificed what they had on the altar of their daughter's career as a skater," Isendrath continues. "Gina's had a nomadic life; she feels as if she's not a part of anything. And then there's Donna, this cousin who's had the Beverly Hills life that Gina's always envied."

A former professional ice skater, Gina returns to her hometown of Beverly Hills to reinvent herself after being forced out of the Ice Capades by a new generation of skaters. "We meet her as her life is falling apart," says 90210 executive producer John Eisendrath. "Everything that she has worked toward and known is going away."

As a result, Gina is skating on thin ice emotionally. "We'll see the kind of self - protective qualities," suggest Eisendrath, "that makes her a mischievous, interesting character."

Gina soon finds a target for her pent up frustrations - her privileged cousin Donna Martin. "Gina had just lost everything, and she comes and hangs out with Donna, who literally has everything," explains Marcil. "And that is just too much for her to deal with."

Gina, who never attended college, was a U.S. Olympic team alternate several years ago. But after she didn't finish high enough to go to the Winter Games, she began skating in ice shows. When viewers meet her, however, Gina has just been dumped by the ice show and sees her life coming apart at the laces.

"All she's known is that world of skating," explains Isendrath. "She focused on it exclusively. But at 23, she finds herself over the hill. She immediately covers up with her cousin Donna and her friends, saying it was her decision to leave the ice show when we know it wasn't."

"Over time, Gina will manifest her unhappiness in ways that reflect her envy of Donna and her sense that Donna has things that she got almost too easily," lsendrath reveals. "Gina feels that her life has been considerably harder than Donna's, and there's resentment in her that will come out and show her in a less sympathetic light."

Marcil is quick to point out that her ice princess will not be your standard bad girl, straight off the assembly line. "I don't believe in real character...real people who are multidimensional. So I had to try and figure out how we can watch this girl and see that she is not just the new villain on the show."

"People are not just villains out of nowhere," she adds. "Gina is struggling, and she does some really manipulative, weird things because she is in fear."

Isendrath gives full credit to Aaron Spelling and 90210's casting people on hiring Marcil, he says she's a perfect fit. "When her name was brought up, everyone was very excited. We all knew how well she was doing, how good she is. We watched her and watched tape of her - and liked her a great deal. Once we saw her and knew she was available, we were thrilled to get her."

And thus far, Marcil has impressed. "Vanessa brings a good deal of sensuality and mischievousness to the show," lsendrath says. "She's doing a terrific job." - (Excerpts from Soap Opera News, Nov. 17,1998 & ABC Soaps in Depth, November 11 1998)
