I sighed. Everyone was glued to the television. The moms came in a few minutes ago and so the room was so full. Finally I squeezed out from between Kaitlyn and BJ and quietly tip-toed to the kitchen. I picked up the phone and dialed long distance to Iowa State University.
"Wuzzup?"
"Uh, hi. Is Jeff Hirsch there?"
"Hang on, I'll check," said the very attractive male's voice. I heard the phone on the other line being put down and I heard lots of movement, laughter, and chattering. Finally, I heard his voice.
"Hello?"
"Hi Sweety!"
I heard him start chuckling. "Hey, Monica! You coming up or not?" I froze. What did he just call me? Monica? Who's that? "Girl, still there?"
"Jeff?" He paused.
"Ohmigosh!" he cried. "Nicole!"
"What was that all about?"
"Nothing, Honey. How is everything at school?" he asked, trying to change the subject. I shook my head.
"Who did you just call me?" I questioned him.
"Oh, Monica? She's just a friend in my English class. She told me she'd call about some homework....," he said nervously.
"Jeff! Don't play with me now, who the hell is she??"
"I told you already!"
"Are you cheating on me?" I asked softly. I could feel my heart thumping in my chest. My eyes started to form tears at the sound of silence. "Please answer me."
"I wouldn't call it cheating...," he began to say quietly.
"JEFF!" I screamed. "How could you do this to me?! You made me promise and I made you promise. I didn't lay my eyes on ANY guy over these months and look at you! How could you do this!" I slammed the phone back onto the receiver and covered my face into my shaking hands. Tears just kept on flowing as I sat there clutching my heart for I was afraid it would shatter at that moment.
"Nicole?" I didn't turn around. BJ walked to me and kneeled down by my feet. Her face had a questioning look on it as she watched me cry. "Are you ok?"
"No," I whispered. She stood up and lead me upstairs to my room. I sat on my bed agaisnt the baby blue colored wall and just stared at the ceiling with blurred vision. BJ sat on the edge of my bed.
"Listen," she said gently. "I know we barely know each other and I'm a bit younger than you are, but maybe I could help you." She gave me an encouraging smile. I saw her eyes twinkle, just like her older brother's. I sat up and smiled.
"You model, right?" She looked surprised.
"Well, yeah."
"Good. You look like a model." We both laughed and I wiped my face on my sleeves. Now we were both side-by-side leaning agaisnt my wall looking up at the ceiling.
"So, are you going to tell me why you were crying?"
"Jeff and I broke up," I said quickly. "He cheated on me."
"Ohmigosh," she said with shock in her voice. She placed her hand on my shoulder. "I'm so sorry. Did you love him?"
"I never thought I did, but when I found out he did what he did, I feel like my whole world's dying. Is that what love is? I don't know. I just can't believe he did this to me!"
"Do you know what happened?"
"No," I said. "I hung up before he could say anything."
"Well, that was smart," she said sarcastically. I giggled.
"I know, wasn't it?"
