Getting Started

(By Angela, PAVE Founder)

Think About Your Goals: You should start by thinking about your goals long term and short term. Ask yourself what you want to accomplish and think about how much time you can invest. Have a notebook with you at all times for brainstorming and ideas that come to you.

Find an Advisor: It helps to find a faculty advisor on campus who has worked with women's issues before. It would be ideal to have an advisor who has fought for sexual assault awareness in the past. It might help to go to the Sociology or Women's Studies Department heads and they might suggest someone.

Contact other Groups: By contacting other groups, you will have a better idea of what has been done, and what's being planned. Contact women's groups such as a campus women's center, rape crisis center, local or state Coalition Against Sexual Assault. Most likely, you can look in your local phone book. If you have a student government or campus safety group, it would be helpful to contact them as well. Plan a meeting time with interested parties, and bring with you a typed mission statement, agenda, and goals for them to keep. It's key to find out what other activities are being planned, so you can collaborate efforts and get students involved. If there isn't anything going on in your community, then you will have to break the grounds, show strong leadership, and start from scratch.

Become a Registered Student Organization: Look into becoming a student organization if possible. There are many opportunities for money and other resources if you are registered student org.

Basics: You will need a name for your organization, mission statement, and a drafted agenda. If you choose to use PAVE and it's mission statement, you need to register with us by filling out the questionnaire. Copy, paste it to your e-mail, fill it out, and e-mail it to me before your first meeting. Look at our agenda and goals to give you a better idea. Go to Questionnaire

Communication: Computers can make your life a lot easier. If you aren't very computer savvy, don't worry. I've had good luck with Yahoo! because they are easy to use. It's a good idea to get a free e-mail account just for your organization. Go to www.yahoo.com or another similar site and register.
