In a Dating / Friend Situation

(by Angela, PAVE Founder)

This is by far the most common situation for sexual assault. The majority of rapes that occur are termed "acquaintance rapes" - the offender and the victim know one another. Trust your feelings. If you become uncomfortable in a situation, assertively ask the person to leave. Don't worry about hurt feelings. This an issue that needs to be talked about and addressed. The victim in this situation usually blames herself for the crime and tends to not report it. Contact your local rape crisis center if you have been a victim.

Take these into consideration:

  1. If possible, let a friend or roommate know who you are with and where you will be. Leave an address and phone number when possible.
  2. Be very clear during a consensual sexual encounter on what you are comfortable with. Don't let a man take advantage of you. If you feel uneasy, be very clear and verbally say "NO".
  3. NEVER leave your drink unattended at a party or bar. The nicknamed "date-rape" drug runs rampant on college campuses and at high school parties. The drug is Rohyphnol, but the street name is "roofies". When slipped into a drink, it is tasteless and odorless. It makes the person pass out and destroys the memory of the night before. If you suspect that you have been given this drug, contact the authorities or a local rape crisis center.
