  • Jaunay Name distribution in France
FRA Jaunay distribution In 1995 I undertook a survey of the subscribers listed in the French Telephone Directory. This was the first opportunity for researchers away from France to undertake such a survey. Previously listings were by town and village only rather than a single list by département.
The exercise was repeated in 1997 and showed very little change. Previously 176 entries were found and this has grown to 181 in just over twelve months.
There is such small movement and growth that it is difficult to determine any trends. The Jaunays have tended to remain in the smaller towns and definitely have not moved far from the probable original home of the name in the Vendée [département 85].
In trying to identify the original source of a family name one can be tempted to seek the most obvious. Extensive research has failed to convince me of the name's origins although I suspect that the name comes from the town of Jaunay-clan. This town is very ancient and its name is Roman in origin.
