John I. Peterson's birthplace is uncertain although it may well be Clinch or Echols Counties in southern Georgia. According to prior research, John's father is K. Peterson, however there is no written record of this.
Sources in Echols County say that John I. was born to K. Peterson and Lyntia Daniels of Clinch/Echols (Echols was carved from Clinch and Lowdnes counties). Lyntia died when John was a child and he was sent to live with Lyntia's sister, Susan DeLoach, wife of Henry DeLoach. There are a number of established Peterson households in the area at this time and they are supposed to be relatives of K., however his son doesn't go to the Peterson family which may signify they are unrelated.
Much of John's history is mercurial since he didn't speak much about his family. * There is some evidence that he changed his middle name late in life from Isom to Issac.
**Clara Carter was also known as Cynthia Clara Carter although GA records and her grave marker have her name as Clara.
