According to prior research by a family member, James Charles was born in North Carolina, an only son. According to family lore, at an unusually young age, between 11 and 14, James was a drummer boy in the Confederate Army.
Sometime after he moved to Marietta County, Georgia where he is buried with his wife, Nancy Carter.
