Henry Richard Atkinson was born in Virginia to a Scot-Irish family that had recently immigrated to the U.S. His mother returned with Henry and his two sisters to Ireland while his father remained in the U.S.
Upon reaching adulthood, Henry returned to the U.S. and settled in Frostburg, Maryland. He was a prominent citizen of Frostburg, serving as Justice of the Peace for the 5th District until his death and representing the county in the House of Delegates for Maryland.
His grandchildren recall that his home was 'a bit larger and more elegant than most homes in town.'
