The United Kingdom and Ireland:See the article which appeared in the May 1998 issue of Family History Monthly regarding GENUKI -- The UK and Ireland Genealogical Information Service on the Internet by David Tippey, reproduced with permission at GENUKI Information Service: "The UK and Ireland Genealogical Information Service (GENUKI) web pages are probably the most important starting point for anyone using the internet as an aid to their genealogical research. Supported by the Universities of Manchester and Newcastle among others, they are maintained by volunteers, and provide an invaluable guide to the genealogical information available on the World Wide Web. |
| "GENUKI is growing rapidly as more and more libraries, record offices and individual genealogists publish their research on the web. If you have a modem and internet connection for your computer and are working within the British Isles, an early visit to the GENUKI home page is essential...." |

| Ordnance Survey Memoirs of Ireland: The Memoirs are a uniquely detailed source for the history of much of Ireland for the time frame immediately preceding the Great Famine of the 1840s. They were written primarily in the 1830s and intended to be printed to accompany the "6 inch to one mile" map series: but they failed to reach the presses until just recently! Now the manuscripts are being published in a series as a joint undertaking of the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin, and the Institute of Irish Studies, Queen's University of Belfast. |
| The Memoirs document the landscape and situation, buildings and antiquities, land holdings and population, employment and livelihood of the civil parishes which are covered in each, some volumes even containing names and details of emigrants during the period written about. As such they are valuable sources of information for the family genealogist and local historian to use in "fleshing out" those cold statistics and impersonal data research generates by putting "people on the land back in time". |
|
The series volumes are numbered consecutively, beginning with Vol. 1. However,
several counties have required more than a single volume to complete the publication of
all available manuscript material. These "intra-county" volumes, while numbered sequentially
for the county, do not have a sequential series volume number.
For Ordering Information, See Website: Ordnance Survey Memoirs.

The Irish Canadian Mailing List Home PageIn 1847 alone over 100,000 Irish emigrants arrived in Canada. By the middle of the nineteenth century, the Irish outnumbered the English and Scots two to one. The PURPOSE of the IRISH CANADIAN MAILING LIST is to encourage the exchange and discussion of information concerning the genealogy, culture and history of the people who have immigrated to Canada from the island of Ireland. Its AIM is to help encourage a greater understanding of the genealogy, culture, and contribution to the development of Canada by immigrants from Ireland. Many Good Links! Research Charles A. Hanna's "The Scotch-Irish":and other good references at Ancestry Search.
|
|
According to Dick Eastman's newsletter of Saturday, August
9th, 1997, the Ancestry Home Page has added the complete text
of Charles Hanna's "The Scotch-Irish". It is searchable via
their on-line database search engine, provided you become a
member of Ancestry Search.
|
|
The Ancestry description of "The Scotch-Irish" says, "This
large and informative overview of the history of the
Scotch-Irish outlines the most noteworthy events of Scottish
history. Use this database to acquaint yourself with this
group as they appear in North Britain, North Ireland, and
North America. The record mentions many prominent
Scotch-Irish individuals in the revolutionary war and other
parts of American history, as well as lengthy discussions of
the Great Plantation of Ulster. By Charles A. Hanna"
|
|
This may be of great value to anyone researching
Strong/Strang ancestors of Scots or Irish origins. The
search feature has been used and found to be good: it pro-
vides you with the text of the paragraph where your match is
found, along with the page reference.
|
|
Email: William L. "Bill" Strong, who has a printed copy of
this two volume book by Charles Hanna. If anyone requires more
information as a result of a search of the Ancestry data-
base, Bill has indicated he would be happy to look it up.

There are various Scottish Clan Associations. See for example, Clan Scott Society,

However, one should note that while there is no known Clan Association for the Strange Family, there is a Chief of the Clan: Major Timothy Edmund Lumisden Strange, Little Holme, Porton Road, Amesbury, Salisbury, Wiltshire SP4 7LL, United Kingdom, was recognized by the Lord Lyon of Scotland as the head of the clan in 1994. He patented his coat of arms (the three diamonds), his standard, pinon, et cetera, in 1994, and then patented a brand new TARTAN for Strange of Balcaskie in 1995. John R. Mayer had a tartan tie, and a pewter badge of the Scottish crest (the bunch of grapes and "Dulce quod utile."). John R. Mayer published some reproductions and patents in his book, Extraneus, Book IX, Strange of Balcaskie, 2nd Ed.
