Anders (Andrew) Gulbrandsen Gronseth went to America in 1876. He stayed with Kittil & J�ran Gronseth for a while but then went to Rothsay, MN. He was married in Rothsay to Sigrid Olsd Vatnas. Anders & Sigrid drove a covered wagon with oxen to Britton, South Dakota to homestead.
I was born November 3, 1860, on the Gronseth farm in Sigdal. I emigrated to America in 1876. I was in Dodget County, Minnesota, for four years and then went to Rothsay, Wilkin County, Minnesota, for three years. I was married in 1883 to Sigrid O. Watnaas. (We were both confirmed in Holmen Church by Pastor R�mcke.) We went the same year (1883) to Day County, Dakota Territory (now Marshall County, South Dakota). We took a homestead, and have lived there ever since. We were among the first settlers, so we have been tried by all of the hardships of the settlers. The first three years we had over 40 miles to the nearest railroad, and it took three days to make the trip with oxen. We have had nine children, two of them died. The two oldest are members of the Sigdalslag, namely Ole and Martha Gronseth. I made a trip back to Norway in 1903 to see my old parents. Anders G. Gronseth, Britton, South Dakota. Sigdalslag 1914.
My grandfather Andrew Gronseth made three trips back to Norway (1903 & 1914 & ?). I remember that my aunt Anna (Gronseth) Syverson told me that Andrew and his brothers gave their inheritance rights to their youngest sister. Sigrid, who remained in Norway and cared for her parents. Sigrid married Hellick Gulbransen in 1894 when she was 29 year old. They lived on the Gronseth farm. Her father, Gulbrand, died in 1905 at 86 years. Sigrid died the next year in 1906 at 41 years and her mother died the following year 1907 at 84 years. Eunice Gronseth Foster Britton, SD. |
