Ole Helgeson Trondhjem Township
A man who boldly faced the responsibilities of life and who by determined and untiring energy won for himself a place of honorable success, was the late Ole Helgeson, the subject of this biographical sketch. By a straightforward and commendable course he made his way to that point where he became a valuable aid and benefit to the community and to a place of esteem and respect in the eyes of his fellow citizens and among his associates.
Ole Helgeson was born January 24, 1849, at Flaa, Hallingdal, Norway, son of Helge Helgeson and Jaron Helgeson. He came to America in 1867, first to Rock Prairie, Wisconsin, and a year later to Lanesboro, Fillmore County, Minnesota, where he worked for two years, and in the spring of 1870 he rigged up a covered wagon drawn by a yoke of oxen and started for Otter Tail county in company with other emigrants. After arriving in the county he took a homestead of 160 acres in section 24, Trondhjem township, which land was mostly prairie land and not so hard to get under cultivation. The first improvement he made on the farm was to build a log house on the place, and part of this house is still standing there and is used as a dwelling by his youngest son Ole.
In the spring of 1872, Mr. Helgeson was married to Guri Moen, who was born August 22, 1845, at Flaa, Hallingdal, Norway, daughter of Engebret and Kari Moen. She came to America in 1867, first settling at Lanesboro, Fillmore county, Minnesota, where she stayed till in 1870 when she moved to Otter Tail county in the same company that Mr. Helgeson did.
Mrs. Ole Helgeson died on October 6, 1924, and Mr. Ole Helgeson died on February 7, 1933, at the age of 84 years.
Eleven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ole Helgeson. They are: Helge, (October 22, 1874-March 28, 1897) deceased; Jorgina, (september 3, 1877-October 22, 1897) deceased; Engebret, (July 21, 1876), Anna and Karolina (October 27, 1874-August 19, 1883), all three died from diptheria only a few days apart; Christian, lives at Columbus, ND; Oline (October 27, 1880) married Theodore Vigen and lives at Columbus, ND; Engebret, lives at Crosby, ND; Anne, married Theodore Helgeson and lives at Rothsay, MN; Hilda, deceased, and Ole on the old homestead.
Mr. and Mrs. Helgeson would often talk about how hard it was when someone of the family got sick the first years they were there. It would sometimes take days before they could get word to a Doctor and then it would take time before he could come. They would also talk about the only store in Fergus Falls at the time they came, which was a small log building.
They always made friends with the Indians by giving them something to eat when they came to their place. There did not seem to be anything the Indians felt so good about as to get eats.
Mr. and Mrs. Ole Helgeson were members of the South Immanuel Lutheran church from the time they settled in Trondhjem township, and they were both buried in that cemetery.

Ole Helgeson
Fergus Journal, February 9, 1933 - Trondhjem
One of the early pioneers of Otter Tail County died at his home in Trondhjem on February 7, 1933, from apoplexy.
Mr. Helgeson was 84 years of age on January 24 last. He was born in Norway and came to the United States in 1870, spending a short time in Fillmore county, and coming to Otter Tail county during the following year. He has resided on the same farm in Trondhjem for 62 years, being one of the first settlers of that township.
Shortly after his arrival he married Guri Moen, who came at about the same time and they were the parents of 12 children, five of whom are living. Three died during the diptheria epidemic in the 80's and three died in later years. His wife Guri died nine years ago last fall. The surviving children are Christ and Ingebret Helgeson and Mrs. Theo Vigen of Columbus, N.D.; Mrs. Theo Helgeson of Rothsay and Ole, Jr., at home. Mr. Helgeson was a good citizen who will be mourned in the community.
